Sorry, I have to give it a 9, only because LotR is better (which is the sequal). I feel sorry for everyone that just doesn't understand fantasy and gave it a 1. I guess that is the real test of a book though: does it draw out peoples emotions. Almost all the reviews gave it a 10 or 9, then the next most given was 1. This is a big leap: form best book ever writen to worst, not even something in the middle, only extrems. Another way to tell if a book is good is by reading all the reviews of it and how manny: a bad and unremarkable book is unnoticed, while a good book is talked about. All the other reviews told about the plot and it's merrits, read them and this book. If you like it, read LotR.

Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century - book cover picture

As an author with my debut novel in its initial release, I recognize a finely written story when I read one. Barbara Tuchman's A DISTANT MIRROR tells a magnificent story. The story told in A DISTANT MIRROR is one of a calamitous century. There is a Hundred Year War interrupted by brief periods of uneasy peace. There is a mysterious plague attacking people some view as being morally culpable for their illness. There is religious strife in all corners of civilization. There are massacres of people of the Jewish faith. There is the rich living in unbelievable comfort while the poor live exploited lives that are brutish, miserable, and short. No, A DISTANT MIRROR does not deal (at least directly) with the last century; it deals with the Fourteenth Century. It is a brilliant work by a brilliant historian. It is one of my favorite popular history works.

The Silver Chair - book cover picture

This is the sixth book in the timeless Narnia Chronicles. It is also another great book as Lewis just keeps adding better ones. I love the Narnia books, and this is no exception. It's not the best in the series, or the biggest, but it's still good, and it's definitely not the worst.Jill and Eustace escape from bullies through a door in the wall, and are instantly transported to Narnia once again. They learn that all is not well in the land of Aslan, and that King Caspian's only son, Prince Rilian, is missing. They meet up with a strange little creature (well, not really little) called a Marsh-Wiggle. The three journey to the far north, where many dangers await them. They must face the harsh mountain winds. They must outwit man-eating giants. And in the end, they must defeat a character whom nobody in Narnia ever wished to see again. Highly recommended.

The Bloody Crown of Conan (Conan of Cimmeria, Book 2) - book cover picture

Most people think that People of the Black Circle is one of the best sword and sandals fantasy stories out there. I agree, but Hour of the Dragon is,IMO, OVER THE TOP! The plot fairly smacks of something by Tolkien, but really it is a revisiting of Conan in all his various incarnations. We see him as monarch, then as vagabond/rogue/thief, then buccaneer, then general-crushing his enemies, seeing them driven before him and hearing the lamentation of their women. Howard depicts Conan as this implacable force of nature and that is precisely what he is in this story. I so hope the writers rumored to be writing a screenplay for another movie read this story. Absolutely AWESOME!

Undaunted Courage - book cover picture

Ambrose brings one of the most thrilling journeys of American history alive for the reader. I found myself able to imagine the plains covered with buffalo and the rigors of travel. I walked each of the 8,000 miles with the Corps of Discovery and was fascinated with every turn of the Missouri. The characters come alive as does the science and politics of early America. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of early America and the opening of the west.

Speak - book cover picture

My english teacher Mr. Anderson made my class read this book for our literature circles and I must say it was one of the best books I have ever read. It is amazing to read what is going through Melinda Sordino's head as she enters the 9th grade at Merryweather High School. This girl has NO friends and it is all because of what happened to her. But I won't give it away because it is to good. So read it.

Then you MUST buy this book.Judith really knows her stuff. This is an excellent place to start brainstorming, even if you think that you have "seen it all". Kudos to Judith for sharing her knowledge. As a published author of several books I KNOW the challenge of marketing to the public - and publishers - that each book brings. Keep a copy of this close by and reread it often. You won't be disappointed.Dusty White

This book finally made sense of the "insanity" I was experiencing! After reading many self-help books and spending many hours talking to "specialists" and getting more unhappy with myself, I found this little book that put everything in prospective and explained what was wrong with me and did it in a very simple way without making me feel that I was mentally "sick"! It gave me hope by helping me understand myself in a way that I have never experienced before. Thank you!!

Villette (English Library) - book cover picture

The turmoils of misplaced affection and jealousy are quite more thrilling in this work by Charlotte. As in 'Jane Eyre' the feelings of the female came out into a wild torrent of emmotion, concealed as it appeared but strong. Lucy I believe is most memorable in her very female composure througout the novel, not as strong and bright in character as Jane but quite unforgetable. The first part of the book is a bit slow in starting as Charlotte gets caught up in describing Lucy's childhood, but moves along rather well later on.
