unique addition to an Irish tradition

Mother Ireland - book cover picture

Ireland is a woman-- womb, cave, bride, harlot, hag-- so, paraphrased, does Edna O'Brien begin her memoir. It is hard to believe this vibrant, lyrical reminiscence of growing up Irish has been out of print for years. O'Brien has created a personal odyssey in seven episodes out of the mystery and mists of Irish life, weaving it into its history and its mythology. Mother Ireland is comparable to Joyce's little books, Dubliners and Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man, in its command and integration of language and spirit. It dances with words, sensuality and the wondrous imagery, juxtaposed against the ever prevalent and monolithic Church and violence in this society. This is a treasure that imbues a unique touch and colouration -- feminine and mystical, earthy and spectral-- into the literary tradition of Ireland's small books.

I read Hoffman's HERE ON EARTH and was so moved by it. I felt it was a story that could happen to anyone. Next, I read THE RIVER KING and was soooo disappointed. But I didn't give up. TURTLE MOON does not have one extra word! The writing was concise and superb. I hate excessive description and love that Hoffman is smart enough to let us use our imagainations to build scenery and decide how the characters will look. I was riveted and read it in only two days. I categorize it as a "comfortable" book--it is easy to get into, there's not a ton of exposition and the characters are interesting. I found myself constantly wondering what could possibly happen next. The perfect novel. I will definitely try Hoffman again.

Heir to the Empire (Star Wars, Vol. 1) - book cover picture

Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire opens the Thrawn trilogy, and was my introduction to the Expanded Universe beyond the Star Wars films. The Thrawn trilogy novels, to this day, remain my favorite Star Wars EU books, laregly because they retain so much of the spirit of the films from the Star Wars classic trilogy. Opening 5 years after the Battle of Endor, Zahn brings us up to date with many beloved SW characters--Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa-Solo (now pregnant with twins), Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and droids C-3PO and R2-D2--as well as creating several new characters such as Talon Karrde, Mara Jade, Imperial Captain Pellaeon and a great new villain in Grand Admiral Thrawn. Zahn is without a doubt, the greatest of the Star Wars EU novelists, and Heir to the Empire opens the Thrawn trilogy in grand style, leaving you eager to pick up Dark Force Rising (Book Two) and read what happens next.

If you haven't read this book, you're missing something... The setting is a mental asylum with its staff and the inmates. Through the book, we enter and share the life there - the humor under the tyranny of the head nurse and the "system"... it is touching and disturbing at the same time because you might end up finding the inmates more 'sane' than the people whose care they're under. I watched the movie based on the book. The movie is very good too but the book is better by far.

Voices of Hope - book cover picture

It is imperative for the Feintuch fan to read this book. The despair evident in Nick is manifested somewhat less in his son, Jared, who shares the family preoccupation with guilt. The quite possible social implications are enormously compelling and extraordinarily frightening. Not so much good vs. evil as the misled colliding. This book should appeal to the socially concerned as well as one just seeking a good read. Feintuch successfully makes you think!

How the Irish Saved Civilization : The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe - book cover picture

A great read for the average reader; an even better read if you know a little latin. Certainly not the work of a professional historian but this book gives a great feel of the time. I'm going to have to read this book again and again. Thomas not only provides reasons why this transition happened but he predicts that it will happen again because the forces involved are universal. The chilling end was like a cold slap in the face. If anything were wrong with this book I would say that the book is too short. One if left wanting more on the wandering Irish monks and more on the present Irish culture.

Isaac's Storm : A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History - book cover picture

This is fascinating book both for the story of the disaster and for the depiction of life and attitudes in 1900. It is amazing that when they really knew so little about science, they felt they had learned all there was to know, including "the Law of Storms."How is it that at the beginning of the century we had this incredible faith in our grasp of the natural world and our ability to control it and now we realize how little influence we really have? When did the disillusion start?

After writing six books about origins of things, Panati now offers a fascinating volume on endings: Past Sex Practices, Species' Extinctions, Last Wills and Testaments of American Presidents, History's Greatest Epidemics, Vanished Medical Practices, Celebrities' Famous Last Words and Wishes, Death Sytles of the Rich and Renown, The Origin of Cemeteries, and why everything that's living must eventually die. Fun stuff. A book I'll cherish to my dying day.

Heart of the West - book cover picture

This would be a wonderful epic saga of the old west and romance. It would fit in with North and South. I could not put the book down once I started it and it is a long book. I was really depressed when it ended. The fire and passion between Clementine and Rafferty is breathtaking and it goes on for years since she is married to his brother Gus which she loves but Rafferty is her heart fire the one that her body and heart craves. But you also love Gus and his gentle ways and he truly loves his wife. The other characters in the book are just as wonderful - Hannah the ex-whore, Erlan the Chinese bought wife, and Saphronie the struggling girl that was taken by indians and saved. They are all looking for their great love.
