The Silk Code - book cover picture

I think The Silk Code is really two books in one. One story is about a detective -- Phil D'Amato -- with a lot of heart and a great sense of humor. The other story is about a strange people who lived along the Silk Road over a thousand years ago. Paul Levinson weaves the two together in a very captivating way -- he goes so deeply into the Silk Road people that we almost forget about D'Amato, but then we're suddenly back in the present and it all ties together in a way at the end. As a graduate student in anthropology, I especially enjoyed the 750 AD part -- the thinking of the characters in that section seemed very real to me, and that's hard to do for an ancient culture. All in all, a *very* enjoyable book -- almost a new kind of science fiction.

Caulfield as wry as ever

Book title: The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye", is a wry, funny, though somewhat depressing individual. Wise behond his years, Holden finds so much of daily life to be filled with phoniness and ambiguity. His "job," as it were in a manner of speaking, is to save children from falling over the edge into adulthood. "Catcher in the Rye" is a page-turner and I would highly recommend it. Even fifty years after its first being published, it rings true.Another book about a young man's battle with the powers that be is a much more recent novel titled "Love Songs of the Tone-Deaf" by Asher Brauner. It tells of a young man in modern days. This young man is similarly disenchanted with life. But he becomes involved with a girl who pulls him into political action. "Love Songs" is extremely humorous too, I found myself often laughing aloud.

Bridge to Terabithia - book cover picture

I have read many books by Kathereine Paterson but by far i think Bridge to Terabithia was the best!!! This book was not over done! It was short, sweet and to the point. It really showed what friendship is about. Also it showed that it does not matter how much money one person has compared to another it matters who they are as a person. Even know this book made me cry it also made me laugh. This is one of the those books that you will read more than once. It is defintly a classic.

The Chamber - book cover picture

And if they say NO I feel like reading it to them!!! This was the 1st Grisham novel I ever read, and after I finished it, I would read ONLY John Grisham books! Nothing else! The best book ever...up until the last chapter, I honestly didn't know how it was going to end. The movie did no justice at all...don't even bother seeing it if you have read this book because you will only get frustrated! I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive - book cover picture

I WANTED TO READ THIS BOOK SO BAD, SO WHEN I FINALLY GOT A HOLD OF IT I JUST COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. TO THINK THAT A MOTHER COULD DO THAT TO HER OWN CHILD, YOU JUST WANT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS, BUT THEN YOU DON'T, BECAUSE ITS JUST SO AWFUL. NOBODY THAT I KNOW OF HAS A MOTHER LIKE THAT, AND I'M THANKFUL THAT I DON'T, USUALLY ITS THE FATHER BEATING THE CHILD. AND WITH MOTHERS USUALLY THEY WANT TO STOP IT, OR THEY LEAVE THEIR HUSBANDS WITH THEIR CHILDREN, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS LITTLE BOY'S FATHER DIDN'T JUST TAKE OFF WITH THE KIDS. THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK IT WILL MAKE YOU CRY, AND THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK THAT IS ALL THAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO. THIS BOOK IS VERY MOVING, AND IT WILL HURT INSIDE, BUT READ THE SEQUAL AND IT WILL BE AWESOME!

The Case Against Hillary Clinton - book cover picture

In what is is an intellectual yet straightforward argument, Ms. Noonan has written a book that I just couldn't put down. Objectively, I think Ms. Noonan has captured the very essence of Hillary Clinton and has done so in a fair, non-gossipy manner. Indeed, she backs her argument with facts which make her opinion all the more persuasive. Every New Yorker -- rather every American -- should consider this a must read!

Hitler's Pope : The Secret History of Pius XII - book cover picture

As a baptized, confirmed, and graduated Catholic, all under the watchful eyes of the Pontiff, it saddens me to read about the dark history of Pius XII. This book should be studied carefully. Truth is not afraid of attacks, and darkness is always expelled by the light...Read this book carefully and with an open mind. The most disturbing aspect of this story is not that Pius XII stood back as a bystander, but that he actively participated in the approval, torture, and death of millions of Jews...Remember, Jesus was a Jew and was called "Rabbi" by Jews first then Gentiles. Pius XII chose to abandon the instructions of our Rabbi and the new commandment to love your neighbor as yourself...Finally, I thank John Cornwell for his bravery and for giving to us something to read, pray, and think about... a book and topic truly worthy of our study. For further reading I highly recommend the author Avro Manhattan. END

Back Home - book cover picture

This book is one of my favorite books that I have ever read. It's the type of book that I can't put down. "Rusty" an English girl who was evacuated to America during World War II, comes back to England after 5 years to find everything in England has changed. Her mother doesn't even seem like her mother. Then she is sent to boarding school, and even has difficulties there. I reccomend this book to teenagers.

An Intimate History of Humanity - book cover picture

Just reading this book gave me a thrilled sort of enthusiasm and compassion towards humanity. I agree that it does not build up very well; it does not have a big powerful climax of revelation, but it is so packed full of interesting true stories, both historical and current, that what you learn is between the lines. He shows how history looked at from the perspective of individual lives is not so much an evolving entity but that different attitudes have been prevelent at different places and times, and what we hold to be proper now has been considered both true and false somewhere else before, or even in our own culture's history, and what really binds us is our always human outlook and response to it all.

Prince Caspian - book cover picture

This book is great with very exiting parts. In the beginning, the children(Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) are wisked away from the train station to Narnia. The old Narnian Kings and Queens find that the land has been captured by the cruel King Miraz. There are no longer talking beasts, and the land seems very empty. The children team up with the Prince Caspian to... Well, you will just have to read this great book for yourself to see what happens!
