Bakin' Without Eggs : Delicious Egg-Free Dessert Recipes from the Heart and Kitchen of a Food-Allergic Family - book cover picture

Just got this book for my egg and nut allergic boy. I was a frustrated former baker who had become egg-free to protect my son from anaphylaxis. The food allergy networks recipes were decent at best (what do you expect with no dairy or egg in a baked good). Just tried one of the banana bread recipes and it was great. Moist and not crumbly-astounding for egg free. You really couldn't tell the difference. I'm going to try more but I hit a winner the first time. A word of thanks to the author for making my little guy's life a little sweeter and more normal!

Great book for young kids who can't sit through a story !

I Spy Little Book (I Spy) - book cover picture

This is a wonderful book for kids who can't sit through most stories. Each page is full of exciting recognizable pictures for kids to name and find. I've had kids whip through the book to see if they could find each object while others have spent a long time on each page to find every little thing. Great language opportunities too! Kids with only a few words will be able to participate as well as those who can describe what they see, where it is, what its's next to, and whether or not they saw it on a previous page!! A definite must get for those with curious kids!

Intelligently, tightly-drawn short story cycle

Book title: On with the Story: Stories

On with the Story: Stories - book cover picture

Barth is truly one of the most intelligent fiction writers inAmerica today. While his recent novels have been a bit too convoluted (and perhaps repetitive), this series of short stories is truly Barth at his best. Of the twelve stories, four are beginnings, four are middles, and four are ends. While each story is, on the surface, about narrative (as is the case with most of BArth's fiction), the stories also touch on the passing and the immortality of love in modern society. It takes some thought to get through this book, but the effort is well-rewarded.

Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls - book cover picture

The book Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Bray Pipher, Ph.D, is one that every parent and teen should read. Not only does it attempt to explain the kind of world that girls today live in, but it gives wonderful insight and understanding into the lives and minds of adolescent girls. Reviving Ophelia confronts many issues from eating disorders, to self-abuse, to problems in relationships of all kinds. Pipher writes from an empathetic viewpoint, and throughout the book, uses examples from her own childhood as well as composite sketches of some of her clients. This book allows girls to understand their own world, when often, they can't seem to find the words to explain what they feel. And it is book that is comforting to the adolescent reader that let's her know that she is not alone.

The best of the Mayfair Chronicles...

The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches) - book cover picture

I have read and re-read the "Witching Hour" every year since it came out. I feel it is the best of the Mayfair Chronicle trilogy. I began reading Anne Rice when she first wrote "Interview with a Vampire." I have to say that I was much more entranced with the witches than the vampires. I was so interested in her stories and the settings, that I visited the sites in New Orleans this spring. It was fascinating to put real pictures with her words. I didn't find the length daunting at all, as many have complained. I was caught-up in the story from page one. I look forward to reading her newest book.

Hacking Exposed: Network Security Secrets & Solutions (Hacking Exposed) - book cover picture

This book is a must for every Admin out there. I would also recommend this book to IT managers/directors/etc. This book is more than just an explaination of security holes/fixes but puts you into the mind of the cracker. You must see the world as the cracker does in order to defend yourself. In Patton, Patton was shouting "I read your book" to Rommel as he beat Rommel in a tank battle. This is the same for System/Netowkr Admins everywhere, it is imperitive we read the cracker's book and understand his assault from beginning to end. Only then can you be prepared. This will also wake up your managers if they are not paranoid enough :-)

An excellent critical history

Book title: Stephen King's Danse Macabre
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Stephen King's Danse Macabre - book cover picture

Engaging, interesting, opinionated, and well-written, this book provides a fascinating look at the horror genre between 1950 and 1980, focusing heavily on comics, novels, films, and B-movies (and if you don't think there's a difference between films and B-movies, you haven't watched enough creature features). More significantly, though, it provides an intriguing look into why people read horror and what horror says about morality. King's discussion of how horror helps us deal with the Appolonian and Dionysian sides of our own personalities is extremely useful, as is his discussion of how _Dracula_, _Frankenstein_, and _Dr._Jeckyll_and_Mr._Hyde_ provide us with the three basic archetypes that still dominate the horror genre. Don't buy this book expecting a novel because it really is a critical history, but if you have a genuine interest in the horror genre, you owe it to yourself to buy this book.

the 3 modern greats: Dante, Shakespeare, Eliot

Complete Poems and Plays,: 1909-1950 - book cover picture

This authoritative volume of his poetry & plays is essential to every poetry collection. The first poem in his first published book, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, was astonishing to its first audiences & is now known as one of the greatest 20th century poems ever. Read any book of essays that includes 20th century poetry; that poem is talked about in it. But I don't mean to be reviewing as though T. S. Eliot was a man of one poem; he was a writer of such severe genius throughout his career that poetry since him has all been in his shadow. Within 10 years of his career, he had had a profounder influence on poetry as we know it than anybody else. Writer of incredibly dense poems, one might argue that with his wild & totally new ideas about he was the godfather of language poetry, but he was also had a fierce love for tradition, in his self-exile from the U.S. to England.

Holes

Book title: Holes (Readers Circle)

Holes (Readers Circle) - book cover picture

Holes is a story about a boy (Stanley Yelnats) who gets sent to Camp Green Lake, which is a juvenile detention center. Going to camp seems good, right? But this is no ordinary camp. In fact this lake has no water in it and as punishment you have to dig holes (5-Ft wide and 5-Ft long). He gets blamed for a robbery when two shoes fall out of the sky, that is what Stanley thinks, but they actually fell off the freeway. Stanley is always in the wrong place at the wrong time and whenever something happens they blame their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great -great-grandfather". I would recommend this book to kids and adults because things aren't what they seem and this book shows that.

Java 1.1: The Complete Reference (Complete Reference) - book cover picture

This is the book which tought me Java. I was in India those days and there were very few books available in the market. I tried Microsoft Press - Learn java now, it talks about everything but Java, then I bought Mastering Java (Sybex)- even this was a poor attempt to teach java. Then one day I found this book, and for the first time I started understanding Java, Authors seemed to be very clear about what they were saying. You will get full value for time and money spent on this book. With this book you don't need to know any other programming language before jumping to Java. It deals with everything. It talks about OOPS concepts, How Java works, etc. etc. The best I have seen so far!
