Moby-Dick, Second Edition (Norton Critical Editions) - book cover picture

This book surprised me. I mean, I knew it was a classic, but it isn't structured like any other book I've read. It starts out as a conventional story about this guy names Ishmael, it turns into a recasting of the whole whaling tradition in terms of American enthusiasm and resourcefullness, and then finishes as pure drama. Yes, there are some slow parts, but they seem real. As if Ismael/Melville is trying to convince the reader, a landlocked American in 1851, that being a whaler is interesting, understandable, and as stark a struggle with nature as the life of any frontiersman or explorer.

A Child is Born : The Completely New Editon - book cover picture

I thought this book was great and constantly go back to it as a reference. It's the only book that can give you a what could be happening to your body every few days while other books go month by month. The pictures are a little scary at first but after you read about them its truly fascinating. If anyone knows any other books that can give a factual day by day drop me an email

I loved this book--but it was sad.

Horse Shy (Saddle Club(R)) - book cover picture

I have two friends and we formed the Stable Club. It's almost like the Saddle Club. We loved this book, but it was so sad. I have a horse that looks like Cobalt, but not as tall. (He's not a thoroughbred, and he's a gelding.) But I like her to be in the stories so Stevie can play a horrible prank on her! I've read tons of Saddle Club books and this one is one of my favorites. (I have many favorites!) Go Ms. Bryant!

. . . If You Grew Up with George Washington - book cover picture

I have several of the "If You Grew Up...." titles in my free-reading area of my sixth grade classroom. The George Washington title is one of the most-often chosen titles--probably because they are curious about our first president. This title also gives a good description of what life was like for the gentry class of Virginia in the 1740s-1760s. Students have been able to use the information to write comparison pieces about GW's life and their own. I highly recommend this title and the others in the series for both the literature and social studies classroom. Weak readers have a high interest in the subject matter; strong readers enjoy a quick read.

Good Read

Night Prey - book cover picture

This was the third book from the Davenport series that I have read and easily the best. I liked the feeling of impending doom with the main characters racing against time to catch the killer before he can strike again and before one of the investigators dies of cancer. The eventual solution of this pending collision caught me by surprise. And, in case this wasn't enough, Sandford threw in a locked room murder mystery as a clever subplot. If anyone in Hollywood ever wants to bring a Lucas Davenport thriller to the screen, this would be a good one to start with.

The Handmaid's Tale - book cover picture

Reading has never been a favorite past time of mine, but every once in a while, I'll read a book that really draws me in. This book was on my AP English summer reading list and happened to be the first one I decided to read. Once I started reading I was hooked. I loved the way that this society, although extremely different from the society that we live in, started out just like ours. The irony of it is, that Atwood based this book on historical fact. We could end up like the Republic of Gilead. Hopefully, that won't happen. This book was the most unique portrayal of the future that I've ever been exposed to. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to think about what the future holds. Read it, it really makes you think.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - book cover picture

Although you have to read the first book first (the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) in order to understand this one, that doesn't detract from this one not one iota. The Hitchhiker series (Restaurant is the second) is the best British humour (not humor) has to offer. His approach to science fiction merged with comedy is sheer genius and beats up Star Trek and 2001 like a pimp beats up his 'hos.

We continue the story where we left off, and Arthur, Ford, Zaphod and Trillian (oh yeah, and Marvin the android with chronic depression) as they meander their way to eat at the most fabulous restaurant, (same as title). So the Earth was just a supercomputer designed to find the Ultimate Question to the Ultimate Answer of Life, the Universe and Everything? No problem...it makes living on Earth even more fun, and totally hilarious with Adams' Hitchhiker series. And, I'm quite sure it'll keep the philosophers quite well occupied for the next few centuries.

This book is hard cover and even looks like a textbook. It is filled with all sorts of colorful diagrams, interesting articles, "education text," and insightful commentary by Jon Stewart and all of the others on the Daily Show (Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, Ed Helms, etc.) This is a book that you can look at over and over again, and it's a great coffee table book or conversation piece. If you like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, you definitely need to have this book for your collection.

Deathstalker Destiny: Being the Fifth and Last Part of the Life and Times of Owen Deathstalker (Owen Deathstalker) - book cover picture

Okay. I picked up the book at a bookstore. Ever since I read Deathstalker Rebellion I've loved the series - Green is a fantastic writer. Destiny is well-written, fast-paced, all the things that I've always loved about the series. But in my opinion, what Green does to his lead characters is inexcusable. COMPLETELY. I won't give away any plot points, but ... oh, I don't know. Let's just hope there's another series on the way, or at least a follow-up book. It's a big galaxy. Things can happen.

The Spider Sapphire Mystery (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 45) - book cover picture

"The Spider Sapphire Mystery" is one of the best Nancy Drews I've ever read. It was a little more exciting than the other books. It's about Nancy trying to find a genuine spider sapphire and she's also trying to find the brother of a famous singer. This brother, named Tizam, then turns out to be part of the spider sapphire theft---but without his knowledge. Confused? Hurry and read the book!
