Dandelion Wine (Grand Master Editions) - book cover picture

the best thing I can say of any book is that if it evoked a strong emotional reaction in me, made me think about it and feel it, perhaps even made me think of my own life in terms of it. Mr Bradbury's boom has done all these things for me. I first read it in the early 80s when i was in 8th grade and never forgot it. Last summer, as I turned 30 and started myself to look back on the summers of my youth, i picked this book up again. It was quite a treasure. it could be 1928, it could be 1978 for me, different eras but same idea - the old disappearing, the new emerging. the thoughts and feelings of a boy seeing the world change, watching his life change with it. Younger people may not fully appreciate this book for it's value - looking back, when I read it circa 1980, i didn't see it the same way either

The Freedom Writers Diary : How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them - book cover picture

I have been involved with the Freedom Writers almost from the beginning as a volunteer at Long Beach Wilson High School. What I have seen, lived through, never ceases to amaze me of what Erin Gruwell and the Freedom Writers have accomplished. The book very graphically and realistically portrays life in the intercity. Through the love and guidence of the "Stand and Deliver" Erin Gruwell these kids have not only written this amazing book but all are in college.

Otto of the Silver Hand - book cover picture

Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was a famous artist, storyteller, and teacher. His was a strong influence on the Brandywine Group of artists. He taught at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia (now Drexel University), and his pupils included Maxfield Parrish and N. C. Wyeth. The latter's son, Andrew Wyeth, was influence by Pyle's "precision and elegance of line." The illustrations in Otto of the Silver Hand show these characteristics in 25 full page illustrations plus headpiece and tailpiece drawings for each of the 14 chapters. The exciting story of Otto concerns the growth of a boy living in the Middle Ages, who becomes advisor to a King, and practices the motto, "Better a silver hand than an iron hand."

Russian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards - book cover picture

I've owned a lot of different decks and different types of fortune telling decks and I find this to be the best one for me. The other two I depend on are the Medicine Wheel cards by Jamie Sams and the Morgan Greer Tarot. Most of the others I had (other Gypsy cards, Cat, Dragon, Woman's Medicine Wheel, etc) I ended up giving away because I just couldn't get out of them what I can get from this set of Russian Gypsy Fortune telling cards. I've had mine since 1991 or 92 I think and they are getting so worn out. Everyone has to find what works for them, but for me, this was the best card purchase I have ever made.

Absolutely brilliant, a book to treasure

Far Tortuga : A Novel (Vintage) - book cover picture

The poetry of his writing is amazing - no one has written this well about the ocean since Conrad and Melville. He succesfully creates the feeling of being at sea, the loneliness, the exhilaration, with subtlety and economy. Every one of the characters is vividly drawn - this is truly a book where you can immerse yourself in another world - every detail is convincingly rendered. You can tell that this is man who understands the lives of his characters, down to the rhythms of their speech. With a style this original, it is amazing that there is not a single trace of fakery or affectation. Matthiessen writes the book this way because that is the way the material needs to present itself - honestly, one never feels the intrusion of the author; it is as if the world - a world that one feels a deep appreciation for - is writing itself.

The House of God : The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American Hospital - book cover picture

I read this book while recovering from a spinal fusion several years ago. I'd had my surgery at a large teaching hospital and read it to pass the time while I was hospitalized. Every resident, intern, fellow, etc who walked into my room seemed a little un-nerved to see me reading this...but I thought that maybe if I kept them on their toes, the'd keep me on mine.
As an MRI/CT Technologist, daughter of an RN, and sister to a pharmacist, I could relate to the experiences in the book. This should be a must-read for all medical personnel!

The second best book I've ever read...

Book title: The Tenth Insight : Holding the Vision

The Tenth Insight : Holding the Vision - book cover picture

James Redfield, in The Celestine Prophecy and The Tenth Insight, has given us the greatest gift we could hope to receive...the meaning of life. Those who doubt the truth and validity of the insights are simply not ready to accept the changes to come. Redfield's books have changed thousands of lives, and given spiritual awareness to many previously-professed atheists/agnostics.

If you only read these books for the excitement of the "adventure," you will be entertained, at the very least.

In my opinion, any reader will stop and contemplate life more than they had previously. That makes every reader more conscious, which raises our collective consciousness! (One step at a time...)

I negate the accusations of "commercialism" in reference to Mr. Redfield or his work. His contribution to society is worth much more than any amount he could earn.

James Redfield's works have been the turning point of my life. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 - book cover picture

I don't agree that LeVar Burton doesn't succeed at recreating a family from 1963. I listen to audiobooks with my daughter all the time, and both of us are always asking for this one again.First of all, it's funny--and for me, nostalgic. It's one of the best audio recordings of a children's book I've heard (except of course for Harry Potter, which sets a standard that can hardly be met elsewhere). The voices of each character suit the personality and character and vary with tone enough to make each one distinguishable by itself. The speed and pace of the reading, and its clarity is also excellent, and the speaker's timing helps to keep the story comprehensible even for a child with an auditory processing deficit.Naturally, the book is a masterpiece, so that makes it a lot easier to read well--but don't miss the recording of the book, it's part of the pleasure itself.

This book reminded me of my own situation

Curious George Goes to the Hospital (Curious George) - book cover picture

When I was four, I ended up in the hospital for playing with medicine and when I looked at this book asked, "Mom, was this like what happened to me?" and she answered yes. Eventually I compared my situation to Curious George's and found many differences, for instance I didn't go to the doctor, I didn't stay overnight, and I had an EKG, not an x-ray. This book may be great to read to a child before or after they've been in the hospital!
