like this phoney reviewing system means anything..
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
I hate this kind of thing, I really do. I mean, trying to review this thing when 1249 other people who are smarter than me are phoney and arrogant enough to write some corny review, like it means anything anyway. and all these people identifying with Holden. It kills me. It really does. I mean, who cares? They flash this book title up and tell you there is going to be a catcher...but there isn't a baseball mitt in sight, just some corny story about some illiterate kid with problems. and so what? Don't you hate when someone writes a novel that is timeless, that strikes a chord in the world still in fifty years. it's so corny you could cry, you really could. I think I"m going to give a copy of it to my sister, because you'd like her. and you'll like this book, you really will. even though this review will make no sense if you haven't read the book, you'll probably say it was useful to you. That's the kind of phoney you are

"Shadow of Obsession" Adds to "Band of Brothers" backstory
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
"Shadow of Obsession" is actually my favorite of the stand-alone _Highlander_ novels. In it, we learn about Darius and his decision to leave The Game ... and why his protege, Grayson, is so bitter. Darius is one of my favorite characters in the _Highlander_ milieu, and learning something more about him is a real treat here. Why a Roman general would give up his command to become a monk is dealt with frankly and sensitively. For fans of _Highlander,_ particularly those who enjoyed Darius as a character, this book is not to be missed.

Great Book
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
A revealing story of the least known of the original mercury astronauts, this book gives great details of Deke's life from the beginning of his childhood to his tragic death. Deke, himself knew of the brain tumor which eventually ended his life. He was worried that it would affect his memory, so we are able to benefit from his detailed recollections. Lucky for us that he was able to complete the book. This is a rare insight into a hero, written at a time in his life were he was very reflective. He obviously wanted to leave an accurate picture of his life (maybe his perceived misjudgment of Gus Grissom in "The Right Stuff" was a motivation). In any event, thanks Deke! I hope to meet you one day!

So what if he borrowed from Sophocles?
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Yes, Aeschylus borrowed from Sophocles when he abandoned the idea of having only 2 actors speaking at once, Aeschylus is even better writing with a third actor. I suppose Sophocles and Aeschylus need me "reviewing" them about as much as Shakespeare or Leonardo da Vinci do. At any rate, the Oresteia is an excellent piece, and who else but Robert Fagles to translate them? Fagles makes a readable translation, with a lyrical quality at times. Buy this book, you won't regret it. If you have read the Theban plays(Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone), and liked them, then you will feel right at home here. If you haven't read the Theban plays(by Sophocles BTW), do so, Fagles translated those as well.

They're certainly merry
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
This is the funniest play/book I have EVER read.
Enough said.
I am not a poet, and you'll certainly know it,
By the time you have read this little bit.
The Merry Wives is a wonderful play,
Great to read on any day.
Sunny, or rainy or a bit in between,
You'll laugh so hard that day, you'll have to visit the latrine.
A couple of wives, mad at their men
Would certainly rate this play a ten!
My opinion, too is of the good kind,
Reading this poem, though, must have put you in a bind

I made the mistake of starting this on a Tuesday morning, read until I had to leave for work, read at lunch, and stayed up way too late to finish it. As always with Coben, it was suspenseful, exciting and full of twists and turns. But one of the things I like best about his work is that he never loses the dimensionality and strength of his characters in the action. You know who they are and what motivates them, which gives the book a bit more depth than your basic thriller. The story includes the themes of love, trust, loyalty, friendship, forgiveness, commitment and family. In the U.S. edition, you even receive a special treat in the form of a Myron/Win short story at the end of the book. Highly recommended.

a big undertaking - but worth it....
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
This book is truly a great one, but you really have to attentive and persistent to "get" it all and get through it. I especially had trouble staying focused for the first 200 pages (paperback). One the book does take off, it is a rewarding ride, a thought-provoking journey through a time in America when things were vastly different (but - in so many ways the same?). Especially interesting is some of dialogue surrounding freedom of the individual vs. the perceived primacy of the masses, enhanced even more so given the backdrop of our events of 9/11/01 in the USA (GBA!!!!). Some of the dialogue is downright eerie in this context, and it almost seems that you could peel some of it out and use it as an editorial without it seeming anachronistic at all.Overall, a great read, and absolutely worth it if you can spare the time.

Lewis and Cleese In a Joint Performance
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
CS Lewis' masterpiece of contra-counter-Christian fiction as performed by John Cleese. A master work by any standard. The text itself is a well known work of moral philosophy, but the Cleese performance (despite a faltering effort with the very difficult ideas expressed at the beginning of side 2 on the tape) elevates this to a supreme work of both art and intellect. Cleese has absorbed the temper of the literature and expressed it in an amazingly precise way. A performance comparable to Muller & "The Green Mile."

a fascinating story
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
A fascinating story of a woman's life, of a century and of two countries. Too often the author intruded with analysis and assumption (which I didn't always agree with), but his fundamental assumption, that Buck deserves more critical attention and acclaim than she receives, is indisputable. He quotes her observation, "It takes strength to be simple, and those who do not feel themselves strong find refuge in complexity."
