I loved this book - it's funny and warm and compltely absorbing. A lot of these single women type books can be quite irritating, but Marian Keyes' are fabulous. Claire is funny and also brave, so I found it quite inspiring in many ways. I read it in almost one go, which is quite something as it's a long book. But I read late into the night, and finally finished it at 2 a.m. with a big soppy smile on my face. The only other book which has had that effect on me is The Trials of Tiffany Trott, which I also absolutely loved, and which is similar to Marian Keyes in some ways. Another book soon please Marian!

Just picked up her new book and read it in one sitting. I loved it and howled at a lot of it.

A 5'7" female marketing exec who weighs 230 pounds gets a health and fitness center client and comes up with a marketing scheme for them. She will lose 100 pounds in 1 year and it will be covered by the local Miami tv station. She and her personal trainer (hunk) will each get $1000 for every pound she loses.

I was laughing so hard during the first 6 pages of the book (scene had to do with milk duds) I had tears running down my face. The scene was so funny!

I found the book warm and funny and the author handled weight loss, human struggle issues, and being overweight issues in a sensitive way. The book was very encouraging, touched my heart, and a book I really enjoyed.

Breathtaking. Unbelievable. THE American novel.

F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald) - book cover picture

I consider this book to be the greatest American novel EVER. Don't take my word for it, however, read it for yourself. Even if you end up not liking it, I think everyone should at least read this book. I also think many people don't see the depth that there really is in this book. It's not just about love, or romance. It is the persuit of a dream, a dream that is not all that it seems. A dream that is represented through one character, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is an illusion. Read it.

Dawn on a Distant Shore - book cover picture

The kind of book that makes you turn off the phone and ignore the kids. Those two reviewers here who said "boring"? I'm wondering if they read the same book. I suppose they need a nuclear explosion or the like to keep them happy. What I like is, interesting characters in challenging situations, and you've got that here in abundance. The first one was very good, but this one is even better. More tightly written. Miss Donati has come into her stride. Bring on Hidden Wolf!

If you are looking to be captivated and entertained, as well as educated and intrigued, read this book. Each and every chapter is well written and Nelson Demille does a great job all the way to the end. The story is about a really interesting man whose past includes an incredible experience in the Vietnam War. It gave me an appreciation for those who were in the war, including my dad. Also, it's neat how the book goes back and forth from the present to his past. This is the first Nelson Demille book I read, since then I've read Plum Island, Gold Coast, and Cathedral. Just purchased Generals Daughter and Charm School. His books are awesome!

What I Saw at the Revolution : A Political Life in the Reagan Era - book cover picture

Ms. Noonan's book is as relavent now as the day it was published, and certainly a more important resource. In today's quagmire of conservative revisionist texts and nostalgic Reagan speaking points, the 1980s are fast becoming those "good old days" that people speak foldly of, yet whose true image has been blurred. "The Revolution" provides its readers with an eye witness perspective whose case has not been marred by the passage of time.

Nix better than Pullman?

Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy) - book cover picture

One of the best series that I have ever read was Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. But it still couldn't hold a candle to Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen series. Each one got better and better until it ended with the smash novel Abhorsen. When I picked up Sabriel I read until I was finished which took a mere 7 hours, which seemed like 7 minutes as the book was so amazing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who liked His Dark Materials, you will be astounded!

Solid Introduction to Spanish Culture

The Cambridge Companion to Modern Spanish Culture (Cambridge Companions to Culture) - book cover picture

This work is a comprehensive volume, well written, that examines the various strata of recent Spanish Culture. Unlike a previous reviewer, who seemed shocked at the notion that this work should include literature, art and music as "culture", I find it provides an adequate cross-section of various genres and media. This is not a "travel guide" or a touchy-feely "insider's guide" to Spain, but a serious scholarly introduction to the men and women who have defined Spanish culture in the 20th century. If you are looking for information on tapas, look elsewhere; if you want to know how the Spanish civil war impacted the arts, this is for you.

One of the greatest novels of the 20th century

Book title: Under the Volcano : A Novel (Perennial Classics)

Under the Volcano : A Novel (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

This is the only book by Malcolm Lowry that is worth reading, but it is truly a masterpiece of 20th century fiction. It is an agonizingly intense story told with the most richly textured writing I have ever read. However, it is not an easy book. The subject is harrowing and the mood is very dark and existential. To anyone who admires this book, I would suggest renting a copy of the National Film Board of Canada documentary about Malcolm Lowry entitled "Volcano-an enquiry into the life and death of Malcolm Lowry." It captures the essence of the man and his masterpiece far, far better than the shallow Hollywood fiilm with Albert Finney. In the NFB film, there are excerpts from the book read by Richard Burton who is brilliant at evoking Geoffrey Firmin's mocking and self-mocking tone.
