Crime and Punishment (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

I was 17 when I first read this magnificent novel, ever since, I always return to this book finding in it endless treasure of human intellect. Dostoyevsky is a very special writer, and this novel is a very special novel, it's on the verge of modern novel and yet it's classic, both with epic elements and begining of the psychological novel wich questiones moral, supreme justice, and a human nature itself. Raskolnikov as a character is a paradigm of every man surching for his ideals and for himself in this cruel and unjust world. I recommend it to anyone and especially to young people that surch for their ideals.

Polacco is superb, as always

Book title: In Enzo's Splendid Gardens

In Enzo's Splendid Gardens - book cover picture

In Polacco's rollicking, urban version of "The House That Jack Built," the story begins innocuously enough with a tiny bee landing on a tree near an outdoor cafe. A little boy leans over to examines the bee and eventually--of course!--all hell breaks loose, spiraling out of control from this original, innocent action. Kids will love the rhyming, rhythmic pace of the book, and adults will appreciate the tiny, out-of-the-way details such as the fountain cherub eventually coming down out of her stiff stance at the center of spraying water and helping everyone else at the restaurant gawk at what's going on--not to mention the fact that the original offending bee appears throughout in every single picture. Polacco has--no surprise here--done it again!

The Witch of Blackbird Pond - book cover picture

I first read this book when I was ten years old and now six years later I still condider this one of the best books that I have ever read. By reading the myriad of fantastic reviews already published for this book one already knows the basic plot of the story, but not only is the Witch of Blackbird Pond a wonderful story but it really teaches the young reader what life was like in New England during the time, what females felt over their oppresion, and the real fear that a women felt, knowing that no one was really brave enough to stand up agianst the mob to defend her if she was ever in trouble. Kit is a stranger to the world of Puritanism just like the reader and she discovers what life held for women in the time along with the reader. I belong to the class of thinking that believes it is very important to rember our history, and this book is a wonderful way to really get a child into the exitment that is American history!!

Forged by Fire - book cover picture

The book Forged by Fire by Sharon M. Draper is about a young black boy growing up with a very cold and hurting life. After his aunt dies, who he lived with, he had to move back in with his mom, abusive stepfather, and his half sister Angel, in the real bad part of town, in a cramped little apartment. His life doesn't get better it gets worst, but Gerald stays strong and protects his little sister Angel from the abusive alcoholic Jordan. Sharon Draper did a real awesome job mixing in a lot of realistic drama, and adding real great suspense. The author did well at making the main character Gerald, because she puts so much pain and fear in his life but he keeps up hope and is strong. This is a real great book I think everyone should read it. It shows great morels.

The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played (Chess) - book cover picture

I digested this book as a teenager, and it was very helpful. Chernev writes in a clear and interesting way. To advance, beginners need to know the concepts presented here, and the rules are useful most of the time. The games are good quality, and the reader won't get bogged down in a mass of variations. The rule-iconoclasm in Watson's Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy is also very important, but only to near master level and above. Definitely learn the rules (and Chernev never claims they are absolute) before learning when to break them!

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) - book cover picture

This EXCELLENT book starts off an extremely EXCELLENT fantasy series! Just read the prologue, 'Dragonmount', and that's more than enough to make you say, "WELL? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?" so, naturally, you read the first chapter. It does start off slow, but you think, hey, if the prologue was so exciting, the book HAS to get good.....and get good it does! If you like heroes, foul beasts, men with no eyes, friends, swords, battles, shocking discoveries, adventures, the One Power, people who talk to wolves, haunted cities, and.....other stuff related to the things I just listed, well, The Eye of the World and the whole Wheel of Time series is chock-full of them! READ! THIS! BOOK! IT! IS! GOOOOOOODDDD!

High Crimes - book cover picture

I started to read this book during a boring day at work. I could not put it down! This is one of the best thrillers i've read in a very long time, probably since i finished the majority of robin cook's books years ago. High Crimes is truely a riveting page turner. The only thing that saddens me is that apparently the movie version is going to be completely different! Tom's assumed name is Tom Kubic and his real identity is Ronald Chapman and the story doesn't take place in Cambridge as Finder writes but in Marin County, CA. There's no Annie either...well you know what they always say..."the book is better than the movie".

The Firm (John Grishham) - book cover picture

This book is outstanding! Grisham's second novel is suspenseful and action packed. Mitch Leery is a man with smarts. Will his smarts help him to get out of the major mess that he is in? Grisham paces this book very well. You'll be hooked from the start! I would have liked the ending to be different, but it is good as it is. While I highly recommend this book, I don't recomment the movie. The movie is a major disappointment!
