grand scale, beautifully told, sci-fi for mature readers

The Dazzle of Day - book cover picture

If you are twenty-something or even thirty-something you may not be ready for this book. It starts slowly; the first third is rather static, but the book builds and keeps building to a beautiful conclusion. Intelligently fanticized, Whitmanesque in its reach, The Dazzle of Day stands with the best of Ursulla leGuin in its depiction of a future world in which relationships limn our humanity, and in which courage and staying power are exhibited as much in the quotidian facts of survival and our flashes of insight as in our grander ambitions. This is about marriage and community and one's place on the earth. I recommend it highly.

Sleeping Through the Night, Revised Edition : How Infants, Toddlers, and Their Parents Can Get a Good Night's Sleep - book cover picture

When my friend told me to buy this book, I was extremely skeptical. Our 8-month-old had never slept through the night and I couldn't imagine he ever would. This book though gave me the confidence to try sleep training and the understanding of how important it was for our son. It is now 6 weeks later and I recommend this book to everyone I know. Our life has changed -- my husband and I now get our sleep and our son is happier than he ever was. Thank you, Dr. Mindell.

A Great kids Book the the adult can love also

¡La verdadera historia de los tres cerditos! - book cover picture

I loved this take on the "Three Little Pigs" as did my kids though for different reasons. My daughter enjoys this book because it is a humorous Wolf's versions of the "Three Little Pigs" her favorite children's classic. I like it because it presented a great sarcastic though honest parady of contemparary Media and American culture. You see according to the wolf, He really didn't mean to blow down the little pig's houses it was all an honest mistake, and the part about him being a big bad wolf? Just a media creation to jazz up his trial and sell more newspapers. Its rare to find a childrens book now a days that are even a little bit creative but this one is pure genius both in it's simplicity but also in the way it portrays the world around us. An outstanding childrens book for the whole family.

Frightful's Mountain - book cover picture

This was a great follow up story to the Far Side of the Mountain. In the end, you wonder what happened to Frightful after she was released into the wild, and this is the perfect story to conclude it. I loved the detail of how Jean Craighead George described Frightful's actions. It is an easy story to get caught up in. Anyone who reads this won't be able to put it down until they're finished, especially if they have read the previous two books. Definetly a winner in my collection!!

turning point in baseball history is well documented

October 1964 - book cover picture

So many people have said so much so I'll keep it brief. I enjoyed this book very much. I think Halberstam is one of the best writers around on American history and topics related to it. He is good, but not great solely as a sports writer. His skill is for delineating social issues and this moment in baseball history is clearly significant as it highlights the success that came with the unique talents of the Cardinals' African American stars. It was a changing of the guard within the game. And a time ripe with meaning for the whole country. These Cardinal players were the inheritors of Jackie Robinson's proud legacy. Halberstam captures these times with style and thouroughness. Was I brief? It's a good book--highly recommended for fans of baseball, sociology or anyplace where those two intersect in fascinating fashion.

Great Series of Stories

The Little House Collection Box Set (Full Color) (Little House) - book cover picture

I really love the sweet, warm feeling in these books. Laura Ingalls had a wonderful, loving, intelligent family. The first three books have a lot of descriptions about food and eating, which are nice, but that gets a little monotonous after a while. There are also a lot of descriptions about how they made a lot of things. Pioneers made most of the things they used rather than buying them. The rest of the books are more plot driven and varied. "The Long Winter" and "Little Town on the Prairie" are full of intense drama. I have been reading these books nonstop since the new TV series came on. I'm on the 8th book. I wish there were even more books in the series. This has been one of the most enjoyable literary experiences ever. Great for both children and adults.

Face the Fire (Three Sisters Island Trilogy) - book cover picture

The three sister Island trilogy to me only got stronger as it got to the third book. Looking back Dancing on the Air was the ground work which made Heaven and Earth and Face the Fire better than the first in this series. I was on pins and needles all the way to the last four pages riveted to know how Mia and Sam's love would change into an adult love. I think the story realistically portrayed all the elements that drove them to make the decisions they chose and how they found their way back to each other.

Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson - book cover picture

Love--delight, enthusiasm, kindness--is the only thing that matters. Everything else is just an obstacle or an enabler.Morrie Schwartz understood this. He knew what makes life full and what makes it empty. And to a great extent he lived out what he knew. His former student Mitch Albom, learning that his old professor was dying of ALS, recorded what Morrie said as he distilled into his last months the lessons of a lifetime devoted to love and understanding. This book, their joint gift to the future, is a rare treat, full of good humor despite its sad origin and its intense urgency. And it is a wake-up call.

All-time favorite

The Shell Seekers (Tenth Anniversary) - book cover picture

This might be my all-time favorite novel. The characters just resonated with me - all of them are flawed in some way, yet you can sympathize with them (except perhaps Penelope's son Neal, who eventually redeems himself in the sequel "September"). It doesn't wrap things up neatly with a happy ending, just leaves you yearning - wishing that Penelope had told Olivia about Richard, wishing that Olivia *was* Richard's child, wishing that you were able to live and love as richly as Penelope.
