Painted House, The - book cover picture

I am a decorative artist, and I found this book to be really helpful when looking for inspiration,or looking up some new themes, fresh ideas. If You are a beginner looking for a step by step guide, don't bother,it won't help. However, it WILL make You want to paint, because it is just so beautiful, it makes You want to grab Your brush and paint all over the place. I also found this useful to show it to clients who want a mural, but are not sure about a theme.

Beautiful addition to Discworld series

Carpe Jugulum - book cover picture

Vampires have invaded Lancre and any fan of Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick won't be disappointed with their adventures. Magrat has gone through some pleasing changes, and Agnes ("She that calls herself Perditax") has become a very interesting addition to the coven. _Carpe Jugulum_, like all the other Discworld novels, is not simply straight-forward fantasy, or just an amusing read. It's difficult to review a Discworld novel because they manage to be both amazingly funny and poignant at the same time. There are some truly beautiful moments in this book, and I cried with laughter more than once on reading it. If you enjoy humorous fantasy, you'll never find anything as remotely funny as Pratchett. If you're tired of having your intelligence insulted by the usual, tired fantasy plot devices and characters and don't mind thinking, I heartily suggest this book and all the other Discworld series.

A great piece of literature

The Tragedy of King Lear (The New Cambridge Shakespeare) - book cover picture

After being forced to read Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade, I vowed I'd never pick up another book by William Shakespeare again. It was hard to read, boring, and I couldn't understand it. Now in high school, with interest in British history, I came across the tale of King Lear in another book, and decided that if it was really going to make much sense that I would have to read King Lear by Shakespeare. So, I did...and I LOVED it...when I put my mind to it, I could understand it, and I found it a great tale told by a great writer. A+!

What a surprise!

Byzantium - book cover picture

I was told about this book by a friend whose reading habits I admire. I have to read many technical books constantly for my job so I enjoy some fiction from time to time. I particularly enjoy historical fiction. This book is one of the best I have read about Medieval times. It was a book that one could become totally engrosed in. I also was impressed how this writer can write some very tense scenes and not have to use objectional language. I have recommended this book and lent my copy to many friends and they have all thanked me. Read this book and you will be glad you did. I have since read 7 other Lawhead books and even though this is the best one so far I have enjoyed all the others.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) - book cover picture

This book is wonderful - it stands firmly on its own merits and is a great read. My son and I are very addicted to the Harry books and can't wait for the next installment. The characters are well-rounded - no one is all evil or all good. Even the nastiest kid in school who hates Harry with a passion - you get a glimpse of his home life and figure that there is a good reason why he's as rotten as apples gone bad.I highly recommend these books. I also hope that someone who knows how to handle taking a book to the screen can be persuaded to make some really great movies out of them. Done by the right people, it could be wonderful!

The Poisonwood Bible - book cover picture

If you need any more convincing that this book is a work of genius, you might want to skip this review. It has simply become essential post-colonial literature. One of the few books that lives up to its own hype, The Poisonwood Bible is a beautiful, poetic, dark, troubling novel that is both dense and amazing readable. I lost sleep devouring this book, and it still sticks in my memory, more than a year later. It's great. Read it and join the modern era.

An Appropriate and Touching Tribute

Peanuts: A Golden Celebration : The Art and the Story of the World's Best-Loved Comic Strip - book cover picture

As a fan of Peanuts since I was in diapers (my sister and I saw more of the Charlie Brown television shows and movies that any Disney film), I found this book to be a apropos and very touching tribute to a comic strip that has been a part of my life and American pop culture for 50 years. I have not seen the strip printed twice in the book as another reviewer has pointed out, but I will look for that. :)The strips are chosen with great care, and I truly enjoyed the pictures of the Broadway revival of "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown!" Overall, a wonderful job. (As further testament to my love of Peanuts, I am listening to "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" as I write this! :)

The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing (Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing) - book cover picture

I just finished reading the book. It was completely awesome. I recommend to EVERYONE. Prior to this I had no knowledge of stock market investing. I am a senior in high school and took a short 3 week class during the summer on finance. This book was recommended to me and now I recommend it to you.

This book comes with the authors website ([...]) which has even newer book updates and printable charts. The best part about reading a book by Kelly is personal contact with the author! I emailed Kelly with a question today(a holiday) and he replied personally the same day!!! I've never heard of being able to contact an author that quickly or at all!

It has to be the best book out their for Stock Market investing. I plan to buy his other "Neatest Little Guide" books soon.

Kingsolver's Masterpiece

Book title: The Poisonwood Bible
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Poisonwood Bible - book cover picture

The setting is the Belgian Congo as it approached independence; the characters are white baptists transplanting themselves in the jungle to spread "the good news". Although there is an adventure about all of this, the book is a commentary about many things:race, women, slavery(physical and psychological),men, cultures classing, politics, God and religion.Whether you agree with the commentary or not, it is all quite thought provoking. Although not as powerfully written as Toni Morrison's "Beloved", this novel is a more gracefull counterpart in the discussion of the human condition and human interaction.Highly recommended.
