All Quiet on the Western Front - book cover picture

I am 15 years old, and was assigned to read this book for an english class. I found it an extremely powerful and moving piece. I read many reviews and was shocked and disgusted when people said they found the book to be boring. Theis book shows us to the finist detail the horrors and war, and how heinous the deaths were. Written by Remarques's, a was vetern who through his own experience shows us the realities of war. How can you be bored, and be willing to toss this book aside? This is what happened to men fighting for these countries during the war. How can you now be touched and be left in a state of awe that seventy years ago this is what happened to our youth, and is now reoccuring today. The situations are worse due to more knowledge and the advance in warfare. To not be engulfed in this story and feel the pain of these men you must be without a soul.

Cookie Cutter - book cover picture

The two main characters, Mary Cunningham and Eugene Shaw have received their fair share for comments, but the character that most intrigued me was Isaac Shaw. He was truly something else, capable of extreme good and evil. It was appropriate that Isaac went into politics because he embodied the checkered past and the ability to rationalize typical in politics. He was so effective in dodging whatever forces threatened to bring him down. Yes, I was held in suspense over how the contest between Mary and Eugene was going to be resolved, but almost just as much I kept wondering whether Isaac was going to achieve his goal and if not who or what would be his downfall. If this were a movie, Isaac would deserve the Academy Award for best supporting actor.

Rabbit Is Rich - book cover picture

This is the first Rabbit and first Updike novel I read. I am now a huge fan of both.

The suburban imagery, the sexually-obsessed thoughts, the confinement of marriage, the grass-is-greener over there beliefs, and the realities of material-obsessed America are so well crafted by Updike that you really believe that you have come to know Rabbit and America in the 1970s-1980s inside and out. Rabbit's pathetic, genuine, scared, and confident - he is a true "Everyman."

Though raunchy as hell at times (and I mean, raunchy), this book is an absolute prize for anyone who lived in a Northeast suburb either as an adult or child.

I just finished this book and it was GREAT (do we expect less?) However, it was a little gory. I love the way the author always makes the person you expect least the bad guy. Compared to her other books, I would give this book a 4, not totally up to the usual standards, but VERY good. The only faults I find is that it was a bit gory and she should I spent more time on the world cup. (I love Quiddich :))

The Elf Queen of Shannara (Heritage of Shannara, Book 3) - book cover picture

Again, Terry Brooks totally shatters the limits of fantasy... the battle scenes are awesome, the characters- lovable, and the story- one of those you will never forget. Terry Brooks killed off like eight out of ten main characters. Strangely, I WANTED them to die. Dunno.. I can't really explain it. But this was pretty much the only Brooks book where Brooks killed off so many main characters. Anyways, an awesome book. Go read it!

Excellent book; very good narrator on audio CD version.

Pattern Recognition - book cover picture

Exciting plot with plenty of twists. Sort of a techno mystery, with plenty of paranoia. Well developed characters. It is unusual to find a science fiction novel with a female character who is admirable and yet believable and sympathetic. The book is thought provoking, but the writing is not heavy handed. To fully appreciate the early parts of the novel, it helps to have a little background in advertising or retail and/or fashion, but not essential. Many science fiction fans are blissfully oblivious to fashion. :)

Shelly Frasier does a good job of narrating the audio CD version, with vocal nuances that reflect the subtle nuances of the story.

The Feeling Good Handbook (Plume) - book cover picture

I am an extremly skeptical person when it comes to most self-help programs, however, as I have been reading the Feeling Good Handbook, I am truly amazed at the progress I've made in battling my own depression. The cognitive reasoning approach and most basic presentation of what constitutes depression, is written in a clear, concise manner that doesn't overwhelm you with facts and data. I can truly say that this book as well as the New Mood Therapy book by Dr. Burns are extremely helpful in providing you with the tools to make your life better.

Adorably Entertaining Play

Barefoot in the Park - book cover picture

I first heard of this play from my good friend, who happened to see it performed in Central Park. I later saw this old copy of the play laying around my high school stage office, and picked it up, remembering my friends mention of it... upon finishing the play (within two days, I could NOT put it down) I realized I have NEVER laughed so hard outloud while reading any sort of literature.. it is witty, comical, and softly but lovingly expressing the hardships of the first days of marriage and living together with your beloved. I highly highly highly recommend picking this up for a mood-lifter, or just a good laugh. It is light and entertaining and very cute!

Book title: Blue Mars (Mars Trilogy)

Blue Mars (Mars Trilogy) - book cover picture

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy probably worked for you if you love science, literature, and people. Or if it didn't work for you, you may not be into extended, involved discourse. Blue Mars seemed to have a bit more than the first two books. But that makes sense--this dream-world expands in our minds, from a tiny speck, the words "Red Mars". KSR seems to progressively relax during the course of the stories, drawing out the descriptions of places, people, and ideas further and further, expanding the horizons of the narrative, in a way that compliments the concurrent expansion of our own minds as we read the books. He seems to explore each thread, each idea, as long and deeply as he possibly can. But this is only fitting. Before we die we want to go deep--go deep into reality. And if great books can't do it for us, what else do we hope will? How long can KSR make the now? As long as you're willing to let him.

In her witty, honest way, Anne Lamott takes us along on her spiritual journey. This book is a collection of "slice of life" pieces; some are funny, some sad, many of them are moving in that sneak-up-on-you way Lamott has of telling a story.Whether you are on your own journey, or if you just enjoy Lamott's work, you will hard-pressed not to be inspired by her adventures and moved by her insight.
