A Gladiator Dies Only Once : The Further Investigations of Gordianus the Finder (Gordianus the Finder) - book cover picture

These nine tales all written in the past decade take place in Ancient Rome in the middle of the first century BC and star Gordianus the finder whose clients provides him with plenty of work (payment is a different story). The cases vary and those "hiring" Gordianus are as wild a group as any detective (make that a finder) might imagine working for. The stories are fun mostly because they provide a deep look at Ancient Rome and the eccentricity of the support characters. Gordianus is his usual witty self, matching and trumping opponents with his intelligence and humor especially the asides. Though not quite as strong as the novels (see THE JUDGMENT OF CAESAR), readers will find each contribution is well written and fun to read.

Whisper Always - book cover picture

All I can say is "Wow!" I read a lot of romance, but this plot and setting felt incredibly fresh to me. The book is witty and sophisticated, yet resonates with emotional depth. I was rooting for Blake and Cristina from the very first page. I loved the crisp writing, and found myself wanting to stay up all night and finish it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone who savors a wonderful and incredibly well written romance!

This book turned my brother's life around!

Hope and Help for Your Nerves - book cover picture

After my brother was diagnosed with the anxiety disease he believed that he would never feel good or happy again and was not even looking forward to the birth of he and his wife's first child. I ordered the book and had it mailed to his home. After reading just a few pages of this book on the day it arrived in the mail, he realized that things would be okay and developed an understanding of this disease and how he could deal and cope with it and live a happy and productive life. He called me the day he began reading the book to tell me how incredibly relieved and at peace he was upon reading the first few pages of Dr. Weekes book and that rather than hide from the facts of his illness he was able to face and understand his condition. I cannot thank Dr. Weekes enough for writing this incredibly helpful and life saving book and encourage anyone that has a family member or close friend suffering from this condition to get this book to them right away!

Excellent, but requires discipline/repetition.

The GREGG Shorthand Manual Simplified - book cover picture

Gregg Shorthand Simplified takes a lot of time and constant repetition, but it is well worth taking that time. Brief forms make for easy, quick and efficient note-taking, once memorized. Initially, notehands and speedwriting are easier to learn, but take much longer to write than shorthand. In the long run, Gregg shorthand wins out. My students learned to love it, even though at first they thought they would never, ever understand it!

Best novel by an Indian author since "Midnight's Children"

Book title: A fine balance

A fine balance - book cover picture

(Or anyone else, for that matter)This novel has become an instant favorite of mine. Over the last year I've read many works by modern Indian authors and this one blew me away. It is amazing to me that it did not win the Booker Prize. There is a most pleasing contrast with Rushdie, Seth, Roy, and to a lesser extent Chandra. Those authors for the most part have written of life outside the lower and lower middle classes of modern India. This book puts you right in the center of the life lived by hundreds of millions in people in India. I am not from Idia, but have visited the country, and in many ways "A Fine Balance" is about the India I wish I had been able to see. The story ranges from horrifying to hilarious. This book touched me deeply, and I recommend it very highly.

Original, Beautiful, Nearly Flawless

The Time Traveler's Wife (Harvest Book) - book cover picture

I spent today sacked out on the couch, reading the final 2/3rds of TTW. It was a day well-spent. Niffeneger's descriptions are beautiful and affecting and TTW is as original as you can get without spilling over into the sci-fi racks. She deserves five stars. My only (tiny tiny) beef is with dialogue; conversations among all characters are as soaring as the prose. Real people don't talk this way. Then again, real people don't time travel, but I'm thankful Niffenegger decided they should.

Minneapolis and Jaguars

Certain Prey - book cover picture

I notice Pete Hautman's Joe Crow drives a Jag, as does Carmen Loan. Is that coincidence or do they like them in Minneapolis? (Carmen's never breaks down). This is an ingenious "noir" a story partly told from the point of view of the criminal that puts us on her side. The more cold-blooded murders she commits the more we find ourselves liking Clara Rinker. She's great character. This was my first John Sandford so I don't know if he uses her again. I'll certainly be checking and buying more Sandfords.

A must-read Embedded Software Primer

Book title: An Embedded Software Primer
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
An Embedded Software Primer - book cover picture

If you are going to buy only one book on Embedded Software Programming, this should be the one. The author introduces virtually everything an engineer needs to know about programming embedded systems. There are two chapters describing hardware stuff that is useful for the software engineer to know. There is a chapter on Interrupts. There are three chapters on programming in an RTOS environment. All of the chapters include coding examples on what to do, and also examples of code with bugs to watch out for. There is also a chapter on debugging techniques. All of the other FIVE STAR reviews (and many of the FOUR STAR ones as well) contain more specific points which I won't repeat here. However, I will echo what I said at the beginnning. If there is only one book you are going to buy about programming embedded systems, this should be the one.

Hope and despair.

Book title: A fine balance
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Unknown Binding
A fine balance - book cover picture

A wonderful book, wherein the whole is far greater than the sum of the parts - the parts being the individual characters considered in isolation. It is relationships, and the depiction of society which drives this book. The balance is between hope and despair, with despair predominant. The reader does not despair, and is mostly entranced. Mistry does use plot, coincidence and a bit of sentimentality in the form of the warmhearted beggar king, to "help" the reader. The book has one truly inspiring character - the uncle, an untouchable who lives near the bottom of society, suffers terrible tragedies, but is never debased nor truly defeated. Few readers will come away without their understanding of the human condition greatly expanded. A caveat: I found the beginning of the book, introducing the first character, dull, so don't give up on this book early.
