Night Train to Memphis - book cover picture

As someone who just finished the Vicky Bliss series, I am suffering from withdrawal. This book is excellent, with a superbly complex plot which will thrill any mystery reader. Personally, I find the romance between John and Vicky even more compelling--I'm very much in love with John! This book is much more serious than Trojan Gold, the 4th book in the series, despite many humourous incidents: I did not find myself laughing out loud quite as much. But what a wonderful book! My only complaint would be that Vicky is so set in her opinions and views, it is hard to judge any of the characters fairly. Besides, I am dying to know what's going on inside of John's head....

Emperor Mage: The Immortals (Immortals (Paperback)) - book cover picture

I really loved Emperor Mage! It was interesting, had a different setting, was full of magic, and was very emotional. I mean, tears were streaming down my face at one point, even though I knew everything was going to be OK in the end. If you love magic, fantasy, and are partial to a bit of romance, this is the book for you. Just make sure that when you read it for the first time that you're somewhere you don't mind crying in!

Daughter of the Empire - book cover picture

I read and really liked the Riftwar Saga, but after reading the Empire trilogy, I now see the Riftwar Saga as just a background story to set up the exciting world of the Tsurani on Kelewan where this book is set.The world that is created by Feist and Wurts is incredibly interesting, with great depth. The culture and politics are all so well written and believable. You really feel like a part of the story.I first read this about 10 years ago, and recently re-read it, which is something I rarely do, and it was just as good the second time. I have read a lot of books by Feist, but the difference between this series and those makes me wonder if I should be looking for more from Wurts instead. This book begins an excellent series, you won't be disappointed.

Well, as a preparing-for-national-and-if-God-helps- international-computer-olympiads highschool student, I found this book not only useful, but neccesary.First of all, I have to say that I owe a Romaninan (by the way, who was #2 at the IOI 2K?) translated version of the book. No matter, the information inside is invaluable, and I recommend it to anyone who wants in-depth information about all of the fundamental things that computer programming goes about. I especially liked the chapters about Trees and Graphs. If you don't owe a copy of ths book, you don't deserve to call yourself a computer programmer :)

The only guide you'll ever need

The Elements of Style, Third Edition - book cover picture

In his 288 page book, "On Writing," Stephen King sings the praises of Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style," then proceeds to violate one of their cardinal rules: "avoid needless words." It's a mistake made by almost every book meant to assist the writer on the rules of the craft. There are plenty available, too many, in fact, but none have ever improved on Strunk and White's comparatively tiny volume.

Everything you need to know to improve your writing is here in a style that adheres to the advice offered. Strunk and White don't tell you how to write, they show you in prose as entertaining as it is educational. You've heard that less is more? The authors prove it in little more than 100 pages.

If you want a handy guide to more effective writing, Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" is the only one you'll need.

The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance - book cover picture

Garrett portrays up-and-coming 20th century diseases with fine detail; the stories, the first-hand accounts, the pain, the agony, the success...the ignorance. This book is chocked full of incredible stories and people who are just trying to live their lives and others who are trying to help mankind live their lives. One of the best books I have ever read, not for the scientifically illiterate or weak at heart! Bravo!

Intelligence and beauty.

The Lions of Al-Rassan - book cover picture

I won't attempt to add to the descriptions of this particular book that others have written: my only comment is that Kay consistently writes fine, challenging stories that are fiercely intelligent, logically constructed, yet still lyrically beautiful. Do not expect traditional fantasy. Magical elements appear, but are, for the most part, secondary to the story arc and the cultures that Mr. Kay builds in prodigious, original detail...and the true magic is most often apparent in the focused intellect of the fully developed characters. The best compliment I can offer is that, once you reach the end of one of his books, you find yourself wishing for another chapter, or a sequel, but you'll be able to accept the knowledge that none will be forthcoming--albeit a little sadly--because Mr. Kay has spun his tale perfectly and in its entirety.

Worth reading several times

Book title: Moviegoer

Moviegoer - book cover picture

This is a very "situated" book: although the themes might be supposed to be universal (Kiekegaardian despair, "malaise," and so forth), the book only started to make sense to me on a second reading and after I'd visited New Orleans and spent some time living in and travelling through the American South. Subtly and without ever taking on the appearance of a philosophical treatise, the novel explores existentialist ideas of despair and authenticity in the specific context of 1950s America. More than anything else I've read to date, _The Moviegoer_ has given the beginnings of an intuitive feel for what the existentialists are trying to capture with these concepts.

The best of the trilogy

Face the Fire (Three Sisters Island Trilogy) - book cover picture

Wonderful, just wonderful. Face the fire is definitely the best of the three Three sisters trilogy. Like the others this novel grabbed you from the very start and took you on an emotional journey until it was finished. I was getting a bit jaded by Nora Roberts' books as I felt they all followed the same formula. This obviously followed the similar formula but I felt it returned to how she used to write in her earlier novels. You are in turns frustrated, tearful, joyous and fearful. All this might sound really over the top but I just can't explain how much I enjoyed this novel!
