Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry - book cover picture

"Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" by Mildred D. Taylor is about a young girl, her family and how they cope with life after the war over slavery. She learns that being African American doesn't mean that you are not equal to whites, but you have to put up with and do as they tell you or there will be many consequences if you don't. Cassie the young girl finds out that it doesn't matter what happens to her family they will fight back toward whatever is thrown at them. Cassie also realizes how much that the Logan family's land actually means to her and to her family because it has there family blood in it. This book was very over whelming. The narrator put so much detail in the book that you could actually feel the tension and sadness in the book.

Oh!!! So I'm OK after all!!! Ha!

What a wonderful book. Full of humor, zaniness, quips and quotes for the ages... any author that refers to the current psychology guru as "the tiresome Dr. Phil" is OK by me!

Of course there's nothing wrong with working out (hey - it sure feels better than being soft & flabby - I would know...) or working hard - but find the pleasure in it. If there truly is no pleasure there... DO SOMETHING ELSE.

At least that's the basic message I found in this book.

Worth its weight in laughter at the very least!

The seriousness of the subject matter and the author's intensity with which she expresses herself is sometimes overwhelming. I felt like skipping some of her hospital antics and experiences to find the "happily ever after" ending. It's amazing she is so articulate, introspective and knowledgeable. Thankfully she has written about her illness in a way that might actually scare others on the same path.

8 Weeks to Optimum Health - book cover picture

I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and cervical cancer. I have been in and out of Doctor's offices for the past two years all to, what seemed to me, no avail. I have tried many different kinds of medications and needed something that would take me out of the chemical rut. "Eight Weeks to Optimum Health" was the answer to my prayers. This is a book that I could not put down I read the whole thing in two days. It is an addition to my library... I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen, but this book will never leave my Library (I'll need it to refer back to) Thank you very much Dr. Weil you are a God send!!!

Games Trainers Play (McGraw-Hill Training Series) - book cover picture

So many training guides merely compile the same old activities that have been circulating forever. I was glad to see some really unique activities in here (even though it first came out twenty years ago!). I also found the trainer's introduction pertinent and helpful. If you work in an international context, you'll be especially pleased. Many of the other game compilations have activities that are language (puns, play on words) or culture (trivia) based. This volume seems relatively free of such nonsense. It's not the sexiest book you'll pick up. The format and design are simple, even stark. Nevertheless, for sheer fun for your buck, you'll have a hard time beating it.

Immense help

Schaum's Outline of Precalculus - book cover picture

I bought this book while taking a 6 week college pre-calc summer course. Being that the course was dramatically shortened from the normal 16 weeks to 6 weeks due to the summer curriculum, any extra help available was crucial. By using this book in conjunction with the regular school book, it made it a lot easier to understand things like functions, graphs, logs, and quadratics. This text pretty much follows right along with the in class book but provides many examples with more detailed solutions and different ways of solving them. I received a "B" in the class. Without this book, how knows?

The Phantom Tollbooth - book cover picture

Filled with warmth, humor, intellect, imagination, and morality, this is a book for the ages, for all ages. In Milo Juster created an Everychild who braves the tedium and intellectual challenges we all face to emerge (like most of us anyway) cognizant of the recognition that boredom resides in attitude and knowledge is a gift we give ourselves. In Tock, we see Everyfriend, stalwart, loyal, if a bit odd, and utterly courageous...if a bit startling when his alarm goes off.

A special bravo to Juster and a heartfelt thank you for the enrichment this wonderful book has made to my life.

Who Am I, God? - book cover picture

Who Am I God, by Marjorie Holmes was given to me in 1970 after the birth of my first child. It has guided me, comforted and given words to my deepest feeling. It covers the universal joys and challanges of life including the death of a child. The Bible and this book consoled me after our daughter died in 1993. It is ageless and timeless, whispering the words we speak in the silence of our hearts to our Creator. I am purchasing a copy for my daughter who is a young mother.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - book cover picture

I started this book, wondering how it would compare with the the other 3, which I had loved. I wondered HOW J.K. Rowling could improve upon Harry Potter 1, 2, and 3. I read the first 10 pages or so and was a little disopointed. But I kept reading. Suddenly it was a wonderful story. It twisted and turned, and I was surprised up to the last page. I think this book easily compares to other 3... in fact it's my favorite so far, and if J.K. Rowling continues this pattern, I'll like the 5th better then the 4th, the 6th better then the 5th and the 7th better then them all.

Great Explanation and Defense of Darwinism

Book title: The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design
Rating: 5/5

The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design - book cover picture

This is a very well written book that systematically explains Darwinism to the average reader, answering many misconceptions and bad ideas in the process. In addition to this, it shows some of the logical results of the acceptance of Darwinian theory in biology and answers some of the controversial issues in contemporary biology, such as the "punctuated equilibrium" mess started by Gould and Eldridge. The book revolves around the main theme of why Darwinian evolution offers the only explanation for human existence and the reasons it dismisses the teleological argument for God.
Dawkins writes in a very witty and engaging style, and I would have to recommend this book to anyone who happens to accept the teleological argument or who just wants a great explanation and application of Darwinian thought in biology.
