Running with Scissors - book cover picture

This book is disgustingly funny. It a memoir, so I take that most (or all) of it is true. But in all seriousness, if people like Dr Finch and his family exist, I really have no words at all.
I think the book should come with a warning that its not for the faint of heart. Or at least something like 'don't read it while eating lunch.' Some parts are truly horrific and honestly, disturbing.
But all in all the book achieves what it set out to achieve. It makes the reader laugh and cry, sadly all at the expense of a little boy from a broken home.

6th grader loved Dragon Rider!

Book title: Dragon Rider
Rating: 5/5

Dragon Rider - book cover picture

Dragon Rider is a fascinating, well-writen book. Friedrake a silver dragon and his other dragon friends are threatened by humans to leave their protective valley. Friedrake volunteers to go look for the "Rim of Heaven" a place said where Dragons can fly safely, in peace. Friedrake takes Sorrel a brownie and Ben an orpaned boy with him on this dangerous quest. Nettlebrand a Golden dragon was made to hunt silver dragons so he decides to send his "armor cleaner" to follow the dragon and is companions to the "Rim of Heaven" so he can go hunting once again. They come across many wonderful mythical creatures, some good and some bad.
This story had me hooked. I read 250 pages in 2 days! I usually don't like fantasy books but I loved Cornelia Funke's other books, The Thief Lord and Inkheart so i decided to try this one. This is my favorite book I have ever read and I have read hundreds of books. I could clearly see Cornelia Funke's voice through the book.
I loved this book!

Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1) - book cover picture

I was very cynical about the world of fantasy writing. My roommate insisted that I read Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule. "Just as good as Tolkien," he said. I was skeptical and one day out of sheer boredom I picked up this book. I've been hooked ever since. A very real sense of world building. The characters are rich, vibrant, but not above worldly flaws that make them more believable and real. You find yourself completely engulfed in a very realistic and wonderful world. You feel what the main characters are feeling and when you're done reading you'll want to rush out and buy The Stone of Tears.

Good writer, Good book

The Next Step in the Dance - book cover picture

I totally disagree with the Virginia and Texas reviewers. This was a good book. The characters were believable. The plots were interesting and well told. I've actually read the book more than once and liked it better the second time. I like this as well as Mr. Gautreux's short stories and hope he continues to pursue both areas. That said, I think that people who write such mean, vindictive,
jealous-ridden reviews are probably just frustrated writers who can't get published or people too lazy or afraid to try and write a book themselves. Ignore 'em, Mr. Gautreaux, as I'm sure you do. It's what they deserve.

October Sky: A Memoir - book cover picture

What a fantastic account of success in a economically depressed area and a son's desire to win his father's admiration. This is a book that is difficult to put down. It makes me doubt that I could have succeeded given the same circumstances. My only complaint is that it would have been helpful to know more about life after Coalwood for the boys that became engineers. I was left wanting more details.

2001 - A Space Odyssey - book cover picture

I wanted to read 2001 before screening the theatrical re-release, but unfortunately it is only playing 'in select cities.' (Don't you just hate it when they do that?) I had often heard that the film and the novel work together as companion pieces, and that is a very truthful statement. As soon as I picked it up, I found myself enjoying the novel more than I had the film. I was also very pleased to find that the book was not very 'dated.' I recommend '2001: A Space Odyssey' to any Sci-Fi fan. Fans of the film won't feel like they have already read this novel. It reads like a new experience.

Finding Laura - book cover picture

I should have known better than to start this book at 8:00 at night, but I couldn't help myself! I absolutely love Kay Hooper, but I had put off buying this book because I had been disappointed in "After Caroline", I just couldn't get into it. "Finding Laura", however, has restored my faith in this talented author! Hooper's characters drew me into the story and kept me there, and the revelation of the murderer was a suprise. Well done Ms. Hooper!

The Snowman - book cover picture

A gentle book that has no words. The story is in the pictures. For my three year old son who so desperately wants to read, he had no problem 'reading' this story. He was able to tell a story, look at the pictures and pick out different details and tell a different story. The pictures are gentle and kind and show a special relationship with imagination, dreams, wishes, children and the fine line between reality and imagination that children can walk with ease. Enjoy.

Introduction to Computing and Algorithms - book cover picture

I've been a professional computer programmer for the last seven years, with no formal training. I bought this book to begin improving my grasp of computer theory as well as practice. I've found this book to be eminantly readable, an actual page turner. Parts of it are quite elementary, but it's very good at explaining "why" as well as "what".I consider the pseudo-code an advantage, since it forces me to look at unfamiliar terms and structures and equate them with the equivalent items in my "real" language. It teaches *theory*, which I can apply to any language, not implementation in a single language that will be obsolete in a year or two.

Overcoming Jealousy and Possessiveness - book cover picture

I never realized how jealous and possessive a person I had become. My lover had been telling me things all along but I wouldn't listen. I was sure that I was seeing things the right way. Boy was I wrong! When I read this book it spoke so directly to my behaviour that I almost got embarrased. As other reviews have indicated, I too am nearly unable to put this book down. I feel an odd sense of freedom on the horizon because I want so badly to be rid of this jealousy and posessiveness which has pushed my lover away and made aspects of my life just miserable.

Inside you know if you are being jealous or possessive. You label it as being scared and not understanding why you're so angry all the time. Read this book. Yes, READ THIS BOOK.
