Young persons review of an exciting and intriguing book

Shogun - book cover picture

This book is as well written as any book written today it captures your imagination and keeps you interested with it every line from start to finish (and thats a long way). It contains real life incidents but just with changed names (eg. Toranaga was actually a shogun called Tokugawa Iemasu) It makes you wonder how someone could get as much information as that AND make it into the most involving and brilliant book ever.It presents the charcters in the best possible way and makes you think that you are actually in Japan (I for one became highly inerested in Japanese history after reading this book). A definate buy I just hope that when I read Gai-Jin it will be half as good. Tom Walton 15, Ps. my gran used to know James Clavell (ha).

Nanny 911 : Expert Advice for All Your Parenting Emergencies - book cover picture

As a fan of the Nanny 911 series, I was already sold on the basic premise of using consistent and loving discipline to raise children. This book describes in great detail the hows and whys of this type of parenting style.

I have been using another book called Behavior Coaching by a Dr. Scott Hall and Matt Pasquinilli. Nanny 911 is a great companion book to Behavior Coaching as it offers expert tips and strategies for handling immediate emergencies like screaming and whining children. Behavior Coaching is a long term approach to improving your child's behavior using a lot of the same fundamental concepts as Nanny 911.

To be a real parenting expert, or expert nanny, get Nanny 911 and Behavior Coaching and start practicing right away.

Teens and phonies

Book title: The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

I have read this book and I love it. A lot of people had told me about it and how good it was. The story is about Holden Caulfield, a troubled teenager who just got thrown out of high school. The story is about his experiences and thoughts. I think a lot of teens, even now, can relate. It's about feeling alienated and having every one against you. Holden keeps talking about all the phonies and there's a good point in what he's saying. The book is inspirational and eye opening. You should read it.

Always Have A Copy When You Travel

Book title: Around the World in 80 Days (Puffin Classics)

Around the World in 80 Days (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

I was heading off to San Antonio for the weekend and needed a book to read on the plane. I arbitrarily grabbed Around the World in 80 Days and it was a good thing. While everyone around me on the plane and at the airport huffed and puffed about delays, I just sat back, like Phileas Fogg, knowing that things would turn out ok. Around the World in 80 Days is not a novel of depth, but thanks to Jules Verne's immense talent for suspense and detail, he created a tale so soothing and entertaining that all you worry about the next time you travel will seem inconsequential. Always carry a copy with you whenever you go somewhere!

Into politics? relig? sci-fi? econ? eco? drama? LOVE DUNE

Book title: Dune (Dune Chronicles (Econo-Clad Hardcover))

Dune (Dune Chronicles (Econo-Clad Hardcover)) - book cover picture

I've read all 6 books several times (and I have a life!). The way Herbert builds a society, and describes its many aspects, is unparalleled. The entire series is really about control and power. Who/what is in charge? The government? econmics? religion? technology? military? males? females? nature?Once the reader gets by the new vocabulary (interestingly based on Hebrew & Arabic), and gets into the story (you may wish to have a scorecard), you will be completely absorbed and will not want to put the books down. P.S. Even though the movie is pathetic, I have to thank its creators. I had not yet read the books, but the story seemed compelling. I bought the first book the next day, and my literary life was changed. This got me into sci-fi reading (Asimov, Heinlein, etc...). Thank you Frank Herbert.

My Second Favorite Poirot Novel, lots of action

Book title: The Big Four
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Big Four - book cover picture

I have read all of the Poirot stories; and I find that this is my favorite, second only to Curtain. I like it because it is very different than the other books of the series. Poirot is much more a man of action, and the killer stays ahead of Poirot for most of this book. (Poirot is usually more in control early on in his cases.) There is also much more danger with Poirot being called upon more than once to save Hastings' life.

This story showcases Hastings' innocence and trusting nature more than any other book of the series. Because of Hastings' personality, Poirot has to resort to tricking him to effectively solve the case. The creation of Poirot's twin brother is one of the most interesting factors in this tale. Agatha Christie tricks her readers a bit too, but finally lets us in on the truth at the end.

Exceedingly recommended!

Book title: The Portable Pediatrician for Parents

The Portable Pediatrician for Parents - book cover picture

Buy this book for yourself and then buy it for every baby shower you ever attend. I LOVE "The Portable Pediatrician". Dr. Nathansan does a "portrait of an age" at the beginning of each chapter where she profiles a fictional, typical child of that age. It's usually pretty funny and very enlightening. Then she goes on to describe what is going on developmentally for that age and psychologically, why these kids do what they do. It really helps a lot! I feel like knowing why your child is doing something is the first step in dealing with it. Not only that, she describes every childhood illness or complaint in's like having your own private pediatrician on call 24/7.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

When one of my friends recommended it, I just smiled and thought "Yeah, whatever." Then, my pen pal mentioned it. After some thought--and a trip to the bookstore--I tried Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I was so intrigued by the second book, I immediately read the first and I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!!! Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is inspiring and I can NOT wait for the U.S. to release Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!!!

Royal Assassin - book cover picture

I had to take a few moments out from my own writing to submit this review for Robin Hobbs "Royal Assassin". I personally have all three (3) books of the "Farseer Triology" in my collection.I recommend "Assassins Apprentice", "Royal Assassin", and "Assassins Quest" to every fantasy reader. These are all simply hard to lay aside once you have read the first page.Frankly, this is the best connected triology I have had the opportunity of reading. Hats off to Robin!Dave

An absolutely fabulous book --- highly recommended!

Book title: Calculating God
Rating: 5/5

Calculating God - book cover picture

I really, really, really liked this book. Did I mention that I really liked it? Well, I did. Science fiction sometimes is dismissed as being too cerebral --- too much for the mind, not enough for the heart. I have never seen both aspects so well balanced as in this book. Yes, Sawyer makes you think --- the book is mind-expanding, mind-blowing, and so on. But he also makes you feel. I cried several times (I also laughed out loud, even on the subway, something I rarely do). But I find myself constantly thinking about the book, and talking about it with friends. I don't think I will ever forget Tom Jericho or Hollus. I recommend this book highly.
