The Last Unicorn - book cover picture

I first read this book at age 8 and was thoroughly captivated by it at first on the level of a great adventure story. But the seemingly simple fairytale holds a great many truths on the importance of love, magic and the power of belief. I've since reread this book countless times, each time finding a new insight. The characters are intensely human, including Schmendrick, a magician whose magic comes and goes (never with predictable results), Molly Grue, a woman whose dreary life with a group of unlegendary outlaws has not dampened her belief in all things magical, and the unicorn herself, who lives in a sweetly arrogant shell, apart from the human characters she travels with-- until a desperate act of magic puts her on their level. The story, which begins as a basic quest yarn (the last unicorn searching for the fate of the others), metamorphoses into a greater tale, one which truly holds depths of meaning for anyone who reads it. I can't recommend it enough.

Transport Processes and Unit Operations (3rd Edition) - book cover picture

I Found this book to be great, and attending one of only two schools in the nation that has a unit operations lab with several pilot plants righ in the chemical engineering building, it was a indisposable resource. The examples were great the text was easy to use, and even the price wasnt bad. Next to Perry's this book is the most important chem E book of the arsnal. I feel sorry for those who didnt like this text. it is quite possibly some of the easy to read and learn from text i have ever had the pleaser to work with.

Great Review for College Spanish

New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish - book cover picture

This is the book I chose to use in preparation for the Praxis II in Spanish (for teacher certification). The test has a reputation of being very difficult as most people have to repeat the written and oral tests, usually the oral one. I studied this during my 30 minute lunch break for around 2 months and I passed both tests the first time. Not only did I pass them, I exceeded the required scores. Grammar was never my strong suit so that must say something about this book. I found the examples explained little idiosyncracies of the language that had always stumped me. Apparently I was using too general a book before as this book really clicked with me. At least take a look at this book if nothing else. Another book I like that is very short, but quite good is Mas Facil: A Concise Review of Spanish Grammar (ISBN 0-13-178336-X).

Another great installment for The Corps series

Corps IX: Under Fire (Corps) - book cover picture

I just finished my 18th Griffin book. Having now read all of the Brotherhood of War and The Corps series, I eagerly await new installments. There is obviously at least one more story left in this series to deal with what happens to Pick.
And yes, there continue to be the usual editing errors, but these are certainly more tolerable than, what, movie versions of popular books? The author was under no obligation to "finish" World War II. Eight books with these Marines in the pacific theater certainly gave us more of the same war than, for instance, the Brotherhood of War books. Griffin offers great entertainment value and I look forward to reading the Men at War, Honor Bound, and Badge of Honor series. If and when another Corps book comes out, I'll be ready and waiting to read it.

Dickens' Predecessor

Book title: The History of Tom Jones (Penguin Classics)

The History of Tom Jones (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

I am tempted to say that just as Marlowe paved the way for Shakespeare, Fielding paved the way for Dickens. I do not have one single complaint about this book. The images are wonderfully portrayed. The main character Tom has many dimensions. He is a rogue, a bumbler, and a womanizer. But at the same time he is heroic, brave, and honorable. Mr. Allworthy is memorable as the virtuous guardian of Tom. Sophia is memorable as a woman with a mind of her own. One of the greatest things about this book is that even though it is over 800 pages long, it is NEVER boring. We are either in suspense, feeling pity, feeling sorrow, or trying to control our laughter. This was the 3rd book I read in History of the Novel. While I did not like the first 2 at all, I REALLY liked this one. It is interesting that Charles Dickens mentions this book in his "David Copperfield" (1850). If you like this book, you MUST see the movie where Albert Finney plays Tom.

Go Cat Go!: Rockabilly Music and Its Makers (Music in American Life) - book cover picture

I enjoyed reading this book and finished it within the week. It's mostly an expanded-overview of the major figures of rockabilly from the 50's through the 70's. This isn't a comprehensive book but that's not its intent. The outline is structured by either region or eras. It also explains when and how they started, and where they are now (if they're still around). There's also a chapter devoted to the semi-recent revival (up through the early 90's, thereby missing most of the bands that sprung up after the BSO struck it big). Also includes a recommended listening chapter.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

One of the best geometry books I have ever read. And a good scifi book too. Before you read this book however, you must understand that the person who wrote this book was a 19th century priest. So, unfortunately there are some politically incorrect views about women in the book (alway a bit less than the men, in inteligence and the number of sides).
But, keeping that in mind, this is a wonderful book that lets you think of the world we live in in a new light. Covers the concepts of dimentions beautifuly in easy to understand writing and the interactions between Mr. Square and Mr. Sphere are interesting to say the least.
So, to all readers interested in seeing our world in a different perspective and contemplating the existance of other dimentions, this book is for you.

Designs for Self-Instruction provides instructional designers and developers with a comprehensive and thoughtful examination of self-instruction. From its theoretical underpinings to practical suggestions for execution, this book transcends any single medium, while applying to all. Its focus is steadfastly and purely instruction - not job support or job aids; not web design or web mastery; not anything more or less than the tenets and philosophies touching specifically on self-instruction. The author writes in an accessible style, yet with authority and wisdom. For many reasons, this small volume is an invaluable addition to any professional designer's library.

One of the Scariest Books Ever Written

Something Wicked This Way Comes (Grand Master Editions) - book cover picture

There's something about the way Bradbury writes, as if you are reading synapses and neurons. He puts you right in his head and it is a wonderful place. With this book I became a fan of Bradbury's work. Apparently originally meant to be a short story entitled Dark Carnival Bradbury turned this into one of the scariest novels ever written. I'm not kidding folks. Under the guise of a children's tale is a story of a circus of bad intentions, a seller of lightning rods, an evil merry-go-round, and the terror of being a teenager. Highly original and entertaining. If you are a fan of horror fiction or just plain old good story telling pick this book up and enjoy.

Long Quiet Highway : Waking Up in America - book cover picture

I have made a heart friend this summer by reading this incredible book. I read it in so many special "places." I didn't want to finish it because the "experience" of reading Long Quiet Highway was profoundly enlightening. I felt the truth of the author's life through her writing. Her ability to pull you into her life so vividly made you want to walk with her on her journey.Ironically, I've had this book in my home for 3 years and it has been signed by Natalie. A very dear friend of ours brought it as a gift. Erich lives in Taos and brought us this treasure. This summer was the right time for me to read this book. I highly recommend this compelling book. Natalie's down to earth brilliance in word, thought, heart and soul style of writing can not be matched. Thankyou Natalie and friend Erich.
