An excellent account of the evolution of science.

The History of Science from Augustine to Galileo - book cover picture

This is a very widely encompassing account of the evolution and development of science through history. The considerations of the sociopolitical and philosophical climates pertaining to the times gives the reader a basis of understanding why science progressed as it did. The account is very well organised and lucid, although it fails in some aspects to consider the contributions of the Far Eastern civilizations. It makes a very valuable contribution to help appreciate acutely the value of those who contributed to science's development.

A Quiet and Wonderful Story

Book title: John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat

John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat - book cover picture

John Brown is a large shaggy dog living contentedly with Rose. When a cat arrives needing food and love, Rose is ready to open her heart and home to the new arrival, but John Brown has a very hard time sharing Rose, and watching Rose take care for someone else. By the book's end, John Brown has changed. In simple words and marvelous pictures, this book helps children - and the adults reading to them - consider a difficult and complicated emotion: jealousy. The perfect book to help children get ready for a baby brother or sister, it's too bad it isn't easier to find.

Double Dead - book cover picture

This is a gripping legal thriller! This novel jumps off the page to grab you from the very beginning and you hold your breath until the end. I could not wait to see what was going to happen next to Jesse and Ramona! It is a little violent, so if you wince easily, beware. A strong page turner that takes you from the courtroom to the streets of Detroit. If you are a fan of thrillers and suspense novels, you will enjoy Gary Hardwick's book. I enjoy his writing!

Rebel Angels - book cover picture

Rebel Angels the sequel to libba brays "A Great and Terrible Beauty" is one of the best books ive ever read! this book is much faster paced than the first and gets to the good stuff early on. this book is mostly centered outside of spence academy eventhough the frist chapters are located there. this book has to do with diceit and treachory and the ritzy life of some of europes socialites. alot of twist and turns to keep you on your feet and is much more frightning that the first with grusome images being placed into your minds about one of the beloved characters. well i wont give anything away but you HAVE to read this book, you wont be dissapointed

The most cruelly beautiful book I have ever read.

Book title: Geek Love
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Geek Love - book cover picture

Geek Love is a book which affirms the idea that everybody is both imperfect and special. The insights of astonishing vulnerability displayed by both Miss Lick (possibly the best chapter title ever "Miss Lick's home flicks"!) and Arturo display that the mask which we present to other people is a thin veneer covering our insecurities. By this standard we are all emotional freaks, something which is much more important and scary than any physical "deformity". Although the narrative style can appear artificial at times this is more than made up for by the sheer pathos of the perfectly constructed characters and the use of simile and metaphor- "inchy little lines like the hesitation cuts on a suicide's wrists." If you have a spare couple of quid BUY THIS BOOK!

Alternative history has found true power with Hancock

Fingerprints of the Gods : The Evidence of Earth's Lost Civilization - book cover picture

Graham Hancock has finally brought alternative theory of historical events to a new level. His deductive reasoning and thorough research make Fingerprints of the Gods a true page turner. From the hypothesis of Atlantis and the mysterious bearded philosophers, we get a more definitive picture about how modern civilization began. If you have ever wondered how supposedly people with primitive engineering skills built the pyramids at Giza or quetioned why two completely separate civilizations, the Egyptians and Incas, both revered pyramids, this book gives plausible explanation to it all.

graphic and moving without being sentimental

All Quiet on the Western Front - book cover picture

I had to read this book for a class and expected for it to either glorify war or present a whiny, over-done call for peace. This book was niether of these things. It is written very frankly by Remarque and avoids excessive descriptions of gore and violence. This is not to say that it isn't often very graphic it its depictions of war, yet it avoids using language that seeks to envoke pity from the reader. For lack of a better description, it is written "just right" for the content explored. It uses believable dialogue between the characters and descriptions that constantly imply the vague, disconcerted, and confusing world of the soldiers without ever becoming sentimental or over-elaborate. I found this novel to be moving, well-written, and entertaining and would highly reccomend it, even to those who normally would not touch a war novel (such as myself).

Thus Spoke Zarathustra : A Book for Everyone and No One (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

This is the greatest work by the only philosopher who may rival Plato; the struggle between Plato and Nietzsche encompasses virtually all the fundamental alternatives in philosophy. (Leo Strauss once said that Plato gave the most comprehensive account of the Whole, and Nietzsche gave the most comprehensive critique of that account.) The book is not easy; a thorough knowledge of Plato's REPUBLIC is needed. One should reread and reflect on every word. A hint: the first passage of ZARATHUSTRA, the descent from the mountain cave, should be carefully read in relation to Plato. All of Nietzsche's philosophy is encapsulated in that descent...
