Dark Star Safari : Overland from Cairo to Cape Town - book cover picture

Toward the end of this wonderful book, Theroux visits the South African author Nadine Gordimer, whose work he has read. Here, he observes that her novels make "Johannesburg seem like a city I was returning to." Thereafter, he provides what is probably his goal for "Dark Star Safari", as well as an accurate description of the compelling narrative power of this tour of 11 African countries. "For an author," Theroux writes, "there is no greater achievement than this, the successful re-creation in prose of the texture and emotions of a real place, making the reading of the work like a travel experience, containing many of the pleasures of the visit. How nice it would be, I thought, if someone reading the narrative of my Africa trip felt the same, that it was the next best thing to being there." Excellent and enjoyable work!

Masterful and Magical story telling by Eric Carle

Very Quiet Cricket: A Multi-Sensory Book - book cover picture

I read the book the Very Quiet Cricket upon the prodding of my sister who happens to be a pre-school teacher. She was preparing several synopses on Eric Carle books which would be printed in the programme of her school's forthcoming Reading Recital. My sister asked me to help her write the synopsis to this book as well as 3 other books. Eric Carle's storytelling in the Very Quiet Cricket caught my curiosity as different insects interacted with our hero page after colorful page. The story ended in a way which delighted me and gave me such respect for the lowly cricket. I discovered a beautiful love story in the book, a story of how awesome nature really is. For me, the chirping sound in the last page really became "the most beautiful sound I had ever heard".

Great Spy Novel

Book title: The Bourne Identity
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
The Bourne Identity - book cover picture

Jason Bourne washes, shot and left for dead, is rescued from the sea. He has no memory of who is or how he got there, so he attempts to discover his past. He learns he is a trained killer and killers are now hunting for him. They'd like to see him dead. The plot spins on from there, and the plot is one of Mr. Ludlum's best. There's some romance. There's some danger. There's some action. Filled with detailed and intricate the plot is fast paced and action packed. The only down side to it, is it's near cliff hanger ending that pretty much expects you'll have the next chapter of the trilogy ready to go.
Another great book, but of a different genre is The Price of Immortality by C.M. Whitlock

The Pearls of Lutra (Redwall, Book 9) - book cover picture

Although I am a senior in high school, I decided to catch up in the Redwall series, as they have always been good entertainment. Redwall, though written for young adults (e.g. junior high age kids) is a wonderfully imaginitive series."Pearls of Lutra" is, I feel, the best of the Redwall books to date (followed closely by the other four best novels in the series, "Salamandastron", "Mossflower", "Mattimeo", and "Martin the Warrior".) "Pearls" has the most complex plot of any of the books, with multiple story lines, and great scenes of adventure, and intrigue. There are many great twists to the plot. The book also has literary value, presenting the idea that friends are more important than wealth and beauty. For any veteran Redwallers out there, as well as those new to the series, "Pearls of Lutra" is definitely a pearl worthy of the Redwall name.

An excellent account of the evolution of science.

Book title: The History of Science from Augustine to Galileo

The History of Science from Augustine to Galileo - book cover picture

This is a very widely encompassing account of the evolution and development of science through history. The considerations of the sociopolitical and philosophical climates pertaining to the times gives the reader a basis of understanding why science progressed as it did. The account is very well organised and lucid, although it fails in some aspects to consider the contributions of the Far Eastern civilizations. It makes a very valuable contribution to help appreciate acutely the value of those who contributed to science's development.

Mansfield Park: Authoritative Text, Contexts, Criticism (Norton Critical Editions) - book cover picture

Wow. That was the one word that popped into my mind when I put this novel down at its close. There is nothing else to describe it so perfectly. This, after Pride and Prejudice, is my favorite Jane Austen novel. It has a faster pace than her other books and is easier to read without tiring. This book is about a young girl, Fanny Price, who is a poor relation, sent off to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle. Once there, she is befriended by her cousin, Edmund, and falls in love with him. He is her greatest friend and the only one who truely appreciates her. All around her is high society, courtships, heartbreaks, and scandals. Fanny thinks all is lost until the final scandal and the realization by her cousin of what is truelly important to him, and to all. This is a very, very, very enjoyable book, and one of the best ever written.

They keep getting better!

Book title: Blue Moon (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter)
Rating: 5/5

Blue Moon (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter) - book cover picture

I could not put this book down. This series just keeps getting better and better. Yes, the sex is pretty graphic, but graphic writing is one of the things that hooks you into this series. I find it interesting that the people who complain about the detailed descriptions of sex have no complaints about the equally detailed descriptions of mutilated corpses and rotting vampires. Think about it. Anita's powers do keep growing, but they aren't just falling out of the sky: they can all be traced back to a source, be it Jean-Claude's marks, sharing with Richard or her own necromancy. The fact that Anita's changed so much since the first books is one of the other things that has addicted me to this series. She's has to adapt and grow, and we've been along for the ride. DON'T read this series out of order if you can help it -- going from this book to Guilty Pleasures and Lunatic Cafe(or vice versa) without the intervening info could be confusing.

A Brilliant Book Sent Out to the World

Book title: The Akhenaten Adventure (Children of the Lamp)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Akhenaten Adventure (Children of the Lamp) - book cover picture

The Akhenaten Adventure was an amazing adventure that had small mysteries inside that lead up to one huge adventure.

I like how Philippa and John had to find out a way to break the seal to get Nimrod out. It was a neat way to show how smart Philippa and John were.

I also liked when they came out of their bodies and inherited other bodies. It was funny how the policemen were surprised they were holding hands after Philippa, John and Nimrod left the policemen's bodies.

My favorite part was that they turned out to be djinn because it's a unique book compared to the rest of the books in the world.

Some of the best books I've ever read.

Harry Potter Hardcover Boxed Set (Books 1-4) - book cover picture

I'm 20 years old and I llove to read and I believe that these four books are some of the books I've ever read. I know alot of people around my age love them too. Actually I've yet to meet anyone thats read them and not at least liked them. my nephew that is six loves the stories as well. My thought to you if you're even thinking to buy these books you're on the right track you'll love them and read them over and over again. The only advice that should be told to anyone about any book really is- read a few pages if you don't seem interested then chances are you will never really get into the book at all. Don't waste your time find something that really lights your fire.

Beloved, the unabridged audio edition

Book title: Beloved
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Beloved - book cover picture

This recorded edition has got to be one of the best ever made. To hear the author's prize-winning prose in her own voice (yes, Toni Morrison has a great voice, and is a wonderful actress) is a rare treat. Who better to know how a sentence should be read? The book is a masterpiece. I've listened to it twice, read it in print once, and every time, I get something new out of the experience.
A chilling ghost story, "not evil, just sad," as the novel's heroine says early on, is interwoven with an insider's shattering view of the slavery experience, and brilliantly carried off. All in all, a triumph, and one of my all-time favorite books.
