The Fountainhead - book cover picture

What can one say about a novel so extraordinary, so rich in "human" characteristics? Here I was, drifting through life, nearly lost as a twenty three year old. Aimless. Then I was introduced to Miss Rand's genius via The Fountainhead. I have read this novel 25 times, cover to cover, since being introduced to it in the late Seventies. I've never looked back. Young American's desperately need to be introduced to this artwork. It will save a lot of growing pains, let me tell you! Don't hesitate in purchasing, then reading, this book, for he who hesitates, is lost. However, this novel was written to assist anyone who chooses reading it, to find your "self." Indeed the most sacred possession we have.

Lincoln's Dreams - book cover picture

...but if you don't read the book first, it won't mean a thing. Yes, this book moves more slowly than some of Willis's later books, but it is far from boring. Each detail builds to an inevitable climax, the reader feeling the same mixture of doom and hope that Jeff does.

I have loved this book for a long time, so much that when asked to lend it, I bought a second copy in case the first never came back.

Zodiac - book cover picture

This is actually my favorite Stephenson book. As a writer, his curse is usually that he lets the plot go spiraling wildly out of control. Stephenson's books usually don't so much end as grind to a halt. Zodiac is a pleasant exception. Its taut plotting and brevity is clearly modeled on the great detective novels of Dashiell Hammet et al, and doesn't stray into self-importance, and it still has all the wit that makes his books so much fun. Great reading!

Hot Plants for Cool Climates : Gardening with Tropical Plants in Temperate Zones - book cover picture

As a professional horticulturist gardening in zones 5 through 7, I have searched high and low for a good reference book on tropical and subtropical plants. At last I have found it!Hot Plants for Cool Climates is informative, interesting and well-organized. The design suggestions are new and exciting, and the encyclopedia is stuffed with detailed information regarding cultivation. Particularly helpful were the cultivar names listed under each species (god help me, how did they ever whittle down the list under Coleus?) and the overwintering tips. Serious amateurs and professionals alike will benefit from owning this book.

Jane Brody's Good Food Book : Living the High-Carbohydrate Way - book cover picture

I love to read cookbooks, and I credit Jane Brody for that! My mother gave me this book years ago when I was trying to eat healthier and it worked. The information on nutrition in the beginning of the book is excellent and I have referred to it again and again. When I got married to a man who would almost rather eat dirt than eat "healthy" food, I won him over with recipes from this book. Now my kids love them, too. I can't say enough good things about Jane Brody - I also have her "Good Food Gourmet" - another triumph and a staple in my kitchen.

The best book on web usabillity

Don't Make Me Think : A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

Before I bought this book I had bought Jakob Nielsen's book Designing Web Usabillity and thought that it was an awesome book on web usabillity. Then I got Don't Make Me Think and was blown away.
Where Nielsen is often fairly right in his observations he's a bit pretentious in his outlook. Krug is far from that is his book. He offers his insights on the subject in an extremely personable, engaging way. (I read the entire book in one sitting) The writing is succinct and to the point but doesn't read like a text book. He offers you his insights in the context of real world observations which enable you to comprehend the subject all the more easily. If you're looking for a book that will give you a crash course on how to think like a web usabillity expert look no further. If you have a project your working on and are considering usabillity and design issue like I was, I think you will be completely satisfied with the information contained in this book.

Programming Languages: Concepts and Constructs, Second Edition - book cover picture

I hated this book when it was the assigned text in my programming languages course. But having just graduated with a BS in CS, I went back and looked thru this book after seeing the negative reviews here. After taking courses like compiler and multi-threaded programming, I feel the book does an excellent job of showing how programming languages evolved, and why. Some of the examples are a little abstract(i agree that the quilt example is too hard to follow, and is spread over too many pages), but for a book that is trying to show the reasons languages evolved it does a good job.
