Survivor : A Novel - book cover picture

Great book. I couldn't put it down, and read it through in one sitting with breaks only to eat. Afterwards, my only thought was "When's his next book?"As usual, Palahniuk (can anyone pronounce that?) surprised me with his usual plot twists. And I was looking for them. He is the master of dark, subtle humor, and satire of the crazy corporate society we have here in America. This book helped me to understand a genuine scary cult an ongoing tragedy of the human experience: The Church of Witness Lee, aka the "Local Church," aka "Living Stream Ministry," aka "the Lord's Recovery."This novel will be taught alongside _Catch 22_ in high school English classes for years to come. A new classic.Play it again, Chuck!

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa - book cover picture

I finally got around to reading this wonderful book. Like many others, I was lead to it by Paul Fussell's "Wartime."

I have gained a new appreciation for the history of the Pacific campaign and will undoubtedly read more.

Sledge's account is a little tedious at times as he makes an effort to nail down historical details of troop deployments, which are important but not particularly interesting to the average reader, but it hardly detracts from the impact of the book.

If an expanded edition of this book were published with better maps and perhaps an expanded introduction by an historian I would surely buy it. Fussell's introduction explains a little bit about how Sledge actually managed to keep notes in combat, which I found interesting and would like to know more about.

King at his best in this voluminous novel

Book title: The Stand
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Stand - book cover picture

I don't read King much anymore, but back when I did this book was among his best. Most of mankind is wiped out as the result of a deadly contagion released at a government facility. In typical King fashion, it contains the gore made famous by his work. The book follows the two groups that survive the disease - your classic good versus evil story. The characters are believable and unforgettable, and King's attention to detail is impeccable. Somewhere 2/3 into the book King will bring back some seemingly insignificant detail from early in the book.King fans will love this book. If you've never read King, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

For Lovers of Characterisation, Dickens, and Dostoyevsky

Book title: The Secret Agent
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Audio Cassette
The Secret Agent - book cover picture

The Secret Agent will appeal to anyone who likes Dickens' satire of Victorian society and its members, and to those who like the revolutionaries scattered throughout the works of Dostoyevsky. Only that Conrad is far more biting in his portrait of Victorian England than Dickens ever was, and even his characterisation is comparable if not superior at points. No one could ever forget, for example, Sir Ethelred, who 'opened a wide mouth, like a cavern, into which the hooked nose seemed anxious to peer'. But Conrad's revolutionaries do not quite topple those of Dostoyevsky (an obvious influence on Conrad despite Conrad's apparent dislike of the Russian). The novel is (thus) primarily character driven; the central idea of the story (the bombing attempt) is so amazingly simple that one almost misses it. The prose is dense and I would not recommend it either as light reading or to Samuel Johnson's 'common reader'.

The Secret of Platform 13 - book cover picture

I thought this was a great book. Some of the story takes place in modern England. The other part takes place on a mystical, forgotten island. If, as this author askes you to, think what a "gump" is, you might not get the right answer. Anyway, it is a gump that opens every 9 years for 9 days, and leads to this forgotten island. And it is through the gump, from the island that three nurses go to get some fish and chips--and they take their charge with them. This charge is a young prince, and he gets stolen...A great read for any magical, ficton lovers.

A Good Play

Book title: Inherit the Wind

Inherit the Wind - book cover picture

This is a work of literature that deserves merit. The characters were realistic and funny. Bertram Cates is a teacher who taught Darwin's Theory instead of the creation story from the Bible. This is against the law in his small town of Hillsboro. A famous lawyer comes to defend him, but an eloquent speaker and presidential candidate is on the prosecution. It's a heated arguement between strictly religous people and those who believe in evolution. Anybody who likes to read drama and historical fiction(as it's based on the Scopes Monkey Trial) should read this book. It really makes you think.

A gripping novel with a ripping yarn

A Handful of Dust - book cover picture

This book is an exploration of a relationship breakdown in the English upper-class during the twenties. There is a biting satire here and the plot appears almost to mirror Anna Karenin in how destructive extra-marital relationships can be. With the relationship finally broken, Tony Last, the main protagonist takes off to exploring in South America, he does not find gold, but gets himself more than lost but entangled in what appears to be a lifelong relationship with his illiterate saviour who expects Tony to read his collection of Dickens to him. The moral of this is that simple things are rarely found but can bring the most tremendous joy.

John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat - book cover picture

John Brown is a large shaggy dog living contentedly with Rose. When a cat arrives needing food and love, Rose is ready to open her heart and home to the new arrival, but John Brown has a very hard time sharing Rose, and watching Rose take care for someone else. By the book's end, John Brown has changed. In simple words and marvelous pictures, this book helps children - and the adults reading to them - consider a difficult and complicated emotion: jealousy. The perfect book to help children get ready for a baby brother or sister, it's too bad it isn't easier to find.

Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea - book cover picture

I have read two books this year about great Americans who were dedicated to improving our knowledge and control of the world around us. One was Charles Lindbergh (Scott Berg's terrific biography, "Lindbergh.") The other an engineer named "Tommy" Thompson who probed the deep ocean, and recovered treasure after 130 years, with equipment his team designed and which no one had thought could be built to operate at depths of 9,000 feet. Lindbergh and Thompson had the same kind of dedication to advancing our conquest of the skies and the seas, the same concern for preserving our environment, enhancing our knowledge of living species. "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea" is a fascinating and exciting book for anyone interested in knowing more about the men and women on the frontiers of technological achievement.

What a deliciously romantic story!!! OOOOOh, CANNOT pass this one up. Christian and Maddy were unbelievable together...Christian's frustration is so heartbreaking, there are times when you can actually FEEL it. I will admit that at times I wanted to slap Maddy, but I guess I can see where the drastic changes in her circumstances might upset her..her reaction was definitely understandable. A MUST READ!!! So what if it's out of print??!! It's worth the search!! :)
