Dogs Behaving Badly : An A-To-Z Guide to Understanding and Curing Behavioral Problems in Dogs - book cover picture

I got this book after reading Dodman's other amazing work, "The Dog Who Loved Too Much." Where that book was mostly empathetic tales of disturbed dogs, "A to Z" is more educational -- but it still has inspiring anecdotes that keep it entertaining. I think Dodman is the Konrad Lorenz of the '00s: He is (seemingly) the first person to recognize that dogs have the same neurobiology as humans, and that they respond to the same medications and therapy (in dog terms, training) methods. Seriously -- penicillin works in both dogs and people... Why not Prozac?

Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew - book cover picture

This was excellent! Being both an adoptive parent as well as a seminar leader, I am so thankful for Sherri's book. Adoptive parents at meetings I have held have thanked me profusely for this information. Well written, sensitive and it answers for adopted children/teens as well as their parents the questions they never knew to ask. I highly recommend it. If you only had two books on adoption, this needs to be one of them. Jim

To the Nines (A Stephanie Plum Novel) - book cover picture

TO THE NINES, aptly named, is the ninth in the Stephanie Plum, Trenton's lady bounty hunter, series. Vinnie, her boss, has posted bond on an illegal immigrant who is reported as missing. Stephanie is hot on Singh's trail when bullets start flying. In the past, Plum has built a reputation as the demolisher of vehicles, suddenly she is haunted by bodies instead. Even her protectors are dropping like bowling pins. As pieces of the puzzle unravel, leading Stephanie closer and closer to the conclusion of a deadly game, her very life is in jeopardy. Evanovich writes action packed novels filled with both suspense and humor and TO THE NINES is no exception. Pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed.

Although I speak spanish fairly well, I do not know many of the more technical terms. When my truck broke down in the middle of the Chiapas, I did not know how to begin to tell the mechanic that I finally located what was wrong and what I needed to fix it. Without the helpful technical phrases abundant in this book, it would have taken me much longer to find the tools and equipment that I needed to repair my vehicle.I highly recommend it to anyone traveling in the outback in Spanish-speaking countries.

Gospel : A Novel - book cover picture

From the opening words, "I had lost my faith, Josephus.", to the final page, GOSPEL is a high action, high suspense, high humor chase across Europe, Africa, and North America.
The characters are lovingly developed and intelligently written. Father O'Hanrahan is representative of all that is wrong and in many ways right with organized religion. And,
you feel all the growing pains Lucy Dantan feels as she is drug along, or tags along, on a great adventure. In the past three years, I've read this book as many times and
I'm in the middle of it again right now. What other book could keep you turning page after page while teaching you religious history and which saints had what cut off. Barnhardt's
new gospel is truly an inspired work.

Mary Mackey's follow up to "The Year the Horses Came" is just as good as its predecessor, maybe even better. Several great themes are explored in this work, including the quesiton of how the peaceful Motherpeople can defend themselves against the nomads without becoming like them. Throughout it all, there's Mackey's inspiring writing, suspence, drama and romance. After reading this and and its predecessor, I wonder how any other novel can come anywhere near as close. By the way, I recommend the novel "The Fifth Sacred Thing" by Starhawk to anyone who enjoyed this one.

The Healing Journey Through Grief: Your Journal for Reflection and Recovery - book cover picture

As a grief counselor, I've seen a lot of books about loss. But rarely have I seen a book that is so sensitive and accurate about the many feelings people experience when they lose someone close to them. The journal entries, prompting the reader to write about their feelings about the loss, are exactly the kind of thing I suggest that the people in my grief groups do. If you've lost someone you love, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

A Long Way From Chicago : A Novel in Stories - book cover picture

Grandma Dowdel is a one women crime wave or so the sherriff calls her. When Joey and his sister Mary Alice visit her each summer they do something new. Through the years of 1929-1942, Grandma, Joey, and Mary Alice terrorize a newspaper reporter and stand up to the Cowgill boys with just a bottle of milk and a cherrybomb. Then in 1931 they steal a boat, fish with illegal fish traps, catch the whole buisness community of the town in their underwear, and feed the hungry drifters from the Great Deppresion in one day! Joey also flies for the first time in 1934. Then in the last chapter Joey sees his Grandmother waving to him from her house while passing through her town in a train on his way to fight in World War 2. I thought this was a very good and interesting book after my school librarian Mrs. Warner got me started on the first chapter.

Perfectly captures small-town lives

Goodnight, Nebraska (Vintage Contemporaries) - book cover picture

"Goodnight, Nebraska" could be the pseudonym of any small, mid-western town, so perfectly does Tom McNeal capture the lives and hearts of its denizens on the page. Though little new ground is covered, "Goodnight, Nebraska" is a wonderful novel, full of poetic language and deftly-turned phrases. With echoes of Faulkner and Welty, McNeal has managed to evoke the last bastion of America, its hopes and broken dreams, and the beautiful rhythm that meanders throughout. While the book jacket says that "Goodnight, Nebraska" is Randall Hunsacker's tale, in truth, Hunsacker is merely a rock dropped into a pond. The resulting ripples spread ever outward, affecting everyone's lives in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. This is one of those rare novels that begs a rainy day to be able to lose ones self within its pages.

If I were as articulate as Steve Krug, this review would require very little thought on your part, but would still deliver a thought-provoking message. I just finished reading this book and found it very informative, thought-provoking, and enjoyable. My head is full, but I don't feel the least worn out. I'm fired up and ready to go back and re-design the few websites I'm responsible for the right way. Thanks, Steve!
