Since I was in high school, my father and I have been passing this book back and forth. I don't even know how many times I've read it! I absolutely love the story line and the twists and clues at every turn. I think Katherine Neville is amazing for not only her writing, but the brain power it must have taken to connect the dozens of dots strewn throughout the novel.
My whole family has read this and loved it - not many books can accomplish that.

Green Man : The Archetype of Our Oneness with the Earth - book cover picture

Very detailed book founded on a lot of excellent research. I didn't expect so much information in such a small book but it's really packed (the type is small too). I was looking for a book that was pretty complete and this certainly gave me what I needed. It has color and black and white photographs of architecture and sculpture showing green man images through history which really puts this into context and brings it alive. Through the text, the author gives explanation as to why Green Man shows up in the sculptures, stories that would have surrounded the building/design of the structures containing the green man images, poetry, and history of the times.

As a student, the writings of Carl Rogers changed my life and view of therapy. I stopped worrying about techniques and other psychological constructs such the Id and Ego. After reading Carl Roger's writings, I started to focus on the person, client, and therapeutic relationship. Every person who is considering entering the counseling or therapy profession must read Carl Rogers. I have had the honor of hearing and seeing Carl lecture and demonstrate what he believed in vivo. Carl Rogers will go down in history one person who truly changed counseling and therapy.

A Thin Dark Line (Mysteries & Horror) - book cover picture

This was my first Hoag book. I was absolutely delighted. I couldn't put it down. Having worked in law enforcement for over 10 years as a prosecutor and as chief District Attorney, in a rural community, I found such reality in Hoag's depiction of a small town/county sheriff's office, police department and prosecutor's office. Hoag was almost dead on. I have known every one of those law enforcement characters in my career. And the depiction of a woman cop and her treatment by the men was on the mark. And, during my read, I changed my mind over and over regarding who was the killer. And when I got to the climax, boy was I suprised at who the villain really was. Thanks Tami for an enjoyable ride. If anyone whats to know what life is like in rural america as a cop, then read A Thin Dark Line.

A small, perfect novel that blew me away

Lying Awake - book cover picture

I read this book in one sitting, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It is perfect, amazing, hard to believe it's only 192 pages. Like Kazuo Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day," this novel finds suspense and emotional drama in the smallest details, and it is just as beautifully written. The life in this Carmelite monastery, where speech is almost completely forbidden, comes to life with such full, tactile detail. Most importantly, Salzman manages to write about a crisis of faith without becoming touchy-feely or vague. He goes right to the heart of the matter -- to the heart of this character -- and writes about her dilemma in a way that makes it universal, whether you're religious or not: the search for grace. I was incredibly moved. Salzman continues to amaze with his range. This is his most transcendent work.

Essential wildland fire reading

Jumping Fire: A Smokejumper's Memoir of Fighting Wildfire - book cover picture

This is the best wildland firefighting book I have read. It really captures the best, worst, and day-to-day of working on forest fires--much more so than any other account I have seen. I also enjoyed the window into firefighting in Alaska--what outstanding experiences! Murray has a knack for relaying his stories in an unpretentious and accessible manner that I hope translates as well to those outside of fire as inside it. I always recommend it as essential reading material to those new to wildland fire, or to those considering it. Murray--I know you have other stories to share, waiting to read more. Thanks for the great start.

As a teacher, I have used this book for two semesters as a text in my study skills class at a community college. Each class that tries Robinson's techniques has improved grades. We have supplemented it with material found on the internet. Robinson is somewhat weak on math courses, but the principles have been applied successfully by my students to science, math, history, literature, writing, and other courses. They are thrilled that their grades have gone up (although I think they were a pair of pretty sharp groups to start with).

Threat Vector - book cover picture

Michael DiMercurio has done it once again with his latest novel Threat Vector. As always, he does a masterful job of telling a gripping plot line and describing action scenes in marvelous detail. His prior experiences in Navy submarines really shine through in all of his novels with his realistic depiction of every detail and thought the characters encounter. He finds a way in each story to keep the same characters interesting and introduce new ones, and Threat Vector is no exception. It's a must read for any naval fiction fan. I can't wait for the next one in the series!

A satirical view on society

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

In J.D. Salinger's novel, this is not just the story of pessimist Holden Caulfield but a satirical view on the current state of society and and the loss of innocence. Such is the character of Holden's dead brother Allie who sybolized the goodness that was in society which is now gone. And Pheobe-who Holden so wanted to protect and keep innocent-is what is still left that's pure and good in society and thus that's why Holden wanted her to stay exactly the way she is. The ducks in the pond that Holden was obsessed with-wondering where they went after the pond freezes over-represent the innocence of youth and the shortness of childhood. And he's wondering where it goes and why children have to enter the phony world of adulthood so fast. Holden sees this destruction of innocence which makes him the cynical and depressed kid that he is.
