Wonderfully written. Excellent narrative voice!

Eleven Days : A Novel of the Heartland - book cover picture

I had read that this "thriller" was above-average and well written. After devouring it in a few short days, I must say I was very impressed. The novel doesn't fall into the usual cliche holes of many in the genre and the distinct and well-formed voice of the narrator gives the story tons of extra impact. Instead of a hard-boiled detective or a supercop, we get a real person along with small glimpses into his life, even if they are glimpses into typical Midwestern life. There's nothing better than a good read that's well-written. That's what you'll get with Eleven Days.

Methods of Applied Mathematics - book cover picture

This book focuses on three topics in applied math 1. matrices, 2. calculus of variations and 3. Integral equations. The development is pretty readable and seems to be targetted to
engineers and physicists. (Hildebrandt taught at MIT, plenty of them around there) Hildebrandt includes a large number of exercises separated by section. The exercises are varied but
include a very significant number of hard ones. There are answers to virtually all of these either as part of the statement of the problem or at the end of the book. This book is about senior level or first year grad level. Hildebrandt does not give lots of examples in the text, he expects the reader can get this from his large and excellent collection of problems. This is an excellent book, but Hildebrandt does expect a pretty
fair familiarity with applied math and a good amount of mathematical maturity.

A Nobel laureate reveals the secrets...

Advice for a Young Investigator (Bradford Books) - book cover picture

There are really no secrets...Ramon y Cajal warns us against several diseases of the will which affect research. He does that with great candour and much charm. I felt myself included in the category of "bibliophiles and polyglots", who collect more books and learn more languages than they could possibly use. Not that I changed: I just added guilt to my innocent vices! It adds to the charm that this book was written in the beginning of the 20th century when, well, wisdom was different. I wonder how the great scientist would react to the success of Marie Curie, Rita Levi-Montalcini, Lise Meitner, Countess Ada Lovelace (whom he could have met) and many other great women of science.

Far Tortuga : A Novel (Vintage) - book cover picture

Matthiessen masterfully weaves an intricate tale of third world survival using the sparse, vast Carribean sea as his setting. The personality of each of the turtlers aboard the HMS Eden have a depth and credibility that lead the reader to believe that Matthiessen must have spent years in the midst of turtle fisherman in order to paint their lives so believably. He also captures a longing for simpler times and the ignorance, freedom and savagery of the poor. Matthiessen is also able to portray the decline of the natural world through man's greed, ignorance and indifference. Although told mostly through simplistic dialogue, this story hits the reader on many levels simultaneously. This story is truely a zen masterpiece.

In Defense of Elitism - book cover picture

Henry gives us what everyone else doesn't the cold hard facts. He tells us the truth gives it the way it is not the way it should be. He tells us that which we don't want to hear (for example the fact that handicapped people aren't as useful to society as "normal" people. His arguments are very logical and well founded. I found the fact that too many people are recieving a college degree a particularly convincing argument. I mean who really needs a college degree to work at a gas station or as a garbage man. Everything about this work oozes elitism right down to the author's name William A Henry III.

The Dragon Reborn (The Wheel of Time, Book 3) - book cover picture

I would like people to stop making Robert Jordan into J.R.R. Tolkien. Robert Jordan and Tolkein's stories have nothing in common other than the fact that it is fantasy writing. And good writing at that matter. Stop calling Jordan Tolkien. Jordan has become an immortal just as Tolkien did. But Jordan has more going for him. He is better than Tolkein in my opinion. I found Tolkein too childish. Jordan is for young adults to adults. Continue the good work Robert Jorda

The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children (Paperback)) - book cover picture

Even though some of it is far fetched, and a little unbelievable thats fine. Its not as if its possible to tell what the people were like in that age. Very interesting idea's, well written with great characters....I loved the ending, it made me have to read the sequel which is good. I must say the rest arent as great, but still really good. One minor problem in my opinion is the extensive detail about the settings....to me it was boring and i usually skipped those parts. Still a great book give it a try.

Disappointment with God - book cover picture

I think Phillip Yancey did answer the 3 questions he asked in his book: Is God Hidden? Is God Fair? and Is God Visible? I agree with Yancey that God were none of those things in the old testament but i was sad at the end of reading the book because i think and i want god to be with us like he was with his people before. I want him to walk as a pillar of cloud by day i want to walk through the garden with him but because our ancestors messed up i feel as though we are feeling the effects of there sin so i still feel dissapointed because i want to see him. i still love you Yancey you changed my life for the better and yes You must buy this book.
