Common Birds and Their Songs - book cover picture

I'm a grandmother, just learning the names of the birds whose sounds I have enjoyed for years. Now my youngest grandchild, Emma, age 4 months, is learning the sounds and pictures. She sings right along with them. This book is truly amazing. CD tracks can be selected "by bird" or can be listened to in order. And the geographic area map lets us know if any particular bird is one we might see in our vicinity. Five Stars.

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day (Oprah's Book Club) - book cover picture

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day covers topics that are less than enjoyable to read about, but the way these topics were presented and the characters portrayed gives testimony to a true work of art. I am not a fast reader on a good day, but I completed this book in record time and what was more amazing wanted to read it one more time. The characters are real and believable for the most part. The rhythm is fluently conversational; when I finished the first reading I felt as though I was saying good-bye to a close friend.

She Flew the Coop : A Novel Concerning Life, Death, Sex and Recipes in Limoges, Louisiana - book cover picture

If you read one book this year, read She Flew the Coop. It's wickedy funny, but it's also poignant, written with grace and depth. Fast paced and funny, SFTC is a crazy quilt of a novel, stitched with love. The book is full of recipes, and you can really cook them! Ms. West is a modern day Jane Austen, plunked own in the American South. You have to get down on your knees to find her in the bookstores, but it's worth the effort

Ender's Game (Ender Quartet) - book cover picture

When it comes to Sci-Fi novels, there are good writes, there are bad writers, and there is Orson Scott Card. What distinguishes him from the rest is that he makes his characters strong and diligent. They are believable in the context that they are placed. He doesn't randomly pick traits from a hat, he gives birth to a new human being thats is unique in every way. And in Ender's Game, he has birthed a creature that is both all powerful, and weak. Brilliantly written, engrossing and finely detailed, Ender's Game is a MUST for anyone who believes that childhood is something that should be held sacred. And if you don't, well, read it anyway! :) It's a fun book, so don't judge it by its seriousness.

An extremely funny, laugh out loud and roll on the floor, book

Book title: Blott on the Landscape
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Blott on the Landscape - book cover picture

This book is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It introduces a series of characters, from self-serving politicians to their innocent victims (his wife, in one case) and people who work for them, especially Blott.
An MP who married money and land wants an excuse to sell it for redevelopment. His constituents do not want it redeveloped, and neither does his wife, so he must appear to be against development while conniving to ensure that the government will proceed. His wife, and a longtime servant (who went there as a World War 2 POW) contrive ever more outrageous defences, ending in a military assault with heavy
weapons.
I have never found an American author as funny as this, and hope someone will recommend one to me.

Comstock is a Gold Mine of Fun Reading!

Book title: Comstock Lode
Rating: 5/5

Comstock Lode - book cover picture

I just finished reading Comstock last week, when I happened to be up in the California gold country myself. I'm a garden writer, author of 5 published books, and I was in Placer County, speaking to the Auburn Garden Club. The town of Auburn, which sits in the middle of the gold rush's richest territory, is a neat place, one to visit if you get the chance. I noticed too that there is still a very busy mining supply store right on one of Auburn's main streets. There's still gold and silver being found up there!
But I digress: All of us who read Louis L'Amour's Westerns have probably noticed that while all of them are fun to read, some are certainly better than others. I thought that Comstock was darn good, and certainly one of the best of his books set in California. If you enjoy a fast-paced, action packed Western, I expect you'll like Comstock. I recommend it!

The Prophet - book cover picture

I discovered this book just prior to getting married 25 years ago. My wife gave it to me as a wedding present because it meant so much to me. The poem of the teacher is worth the price of the whole book. Any one in leadership role at all should read this poem on a teacher and then read the one on your particualar profession. This is a must read for anyone who wishes to teach on any level, in any situtation: public or private education, Sunday School, preaching, industry, College, or whatever.

only for the true believers.....

Book title: Charismatic Chaos

Charismatic Chaos - book cover picture

This book exposes the false doctrines brought about in the charismatic movement. If people would search the scriptures for themselves they would plainly see the errors taught by the so-called spiritual leaders in this movement. I have actually heard some of the BLASPHEMOUS statements made by these wolves in sheeps clothing, and it's about time the true church had a leader willing to contend for the faith....There is no gray area when it comes to rightly dividing the Word, the Bible doesn't say to lightly divide the Word.....I think Dr. MacArthur has rightly divided the Word in this case. To let everyone know- I am neither a Baptist, Methodist, Pentacostal, etc.....I attend a Bible Church with no real roots other than God's word the scriptures. What else is there?

The Last Day - book cover picture

A Religious Right organization sent out a heads up to its membership the 3rd week in February targeting this and other WEB sites for attacks on publications they consider "dangerous," including the book THE LAST DAY and an upcoming movie based on the book. This email reads in part: "Make sure you disguise your comments and your identity... Vary your criticisms and your techniques so that the site host can't detect you. Remember, if you are always very negative, you won't sound convincing. Sometimes faint praise is better than harsh criticism. Making the author and his/her work look foolish and insignificant is more effective...don't give up. If everyone does his/her part...we'll halt these offensive materials from spreading." It's scary to know the Thought Police are still with us.
