Who cares if the facts are slightly altered?

The Right Stuff - book cover picture

When reading The Right Stuff, the reader must realize that they are reading a novel, non-fiction. Therefore the author may take the liberty of fabricating slightly on the tale. If the reader realizes this it isn't a big deal. Also, I found his descriptions of the feelings of the chimps in the capsule to be quite entertaining. In response to an earlier review, the concentration on Pete Conrad is necessary to the reader in order for them to establish the mindset of the pilots and their wives. Danger wasn't a factor in their lives as shown evident by the Pax River problems. This is a very entertaining book and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the United States Space Program.

I purchased this book as a reference book for my personal library and found that my children also love it. The illustrations are stunning and helpful on both an artistic and scientific level. I highly reccomend this book for artists and for anyone interested in nature (including children). My 10 year old lovers to try to draw the images and identify them. This book is not for someone looking for photographic images.

The Friend Who Got Away : Twenty Women's True Life Tales of Friendships that Blew Up, Burned Out or Faded Away - book cover picture

Non-fiction essays written by women, about friendships that ended: all different kinds of friendships, and all different kinds of endings. Most of the writing is first-rate, and the stories are riveting. This is a super-interesting book. Though most of the writers seemed richer and whiter than me, I could relate to just about everything.

I especially enjoy the pair of essays "Emily" and "Heather"--each friend wrote her own take on how the friendship was and how it ended: fascinating. A lot of women remember college years, which is a rich time to read about. Another favorite is "In-Betweens" which does a great job reminding the reader what childhood feels like. It's the story of an eight-year-old's first few months in Jordan.

The cover is ugly, but the book is good--highly recommended!

If you live in NYC, you really get this!

A Certain Age - book cover picture

From the other reviews posted, I can see that you don't *have* to live in NYC to enjoy this book. But as a New Yorker, I found this book to be over-the-top hilarious. However, I can see that some people might miss the humor, the way it was possible (for some) not to realize that the movie "Fargo" was a comedy. Florence Collins is a dead-on parody of a very specific personality that I encounter all over the place here. I highly recommend this book and have bought it for several friends. Just don't take it seriously! There is no serious message here.

Book title: The Storyteller

The Storyteller - book cover picture

This book has the most amazing sense of voice and character I have ever read. The storyteller recounts the Machiguengas' mythology, day to day life, and even a few familiar stories (Kafka's The Metamorphosis) with an achingly beautiful love for the subject matter combined with the bitter knowledge that all this might be lost. The writer in Firenze sounds like a writer, constantly making connections between actions and the larger, metaphorical picture. The book delves into more than just a tribe, but the human mind as well. I think I'll read it again, next time in Spanish.

Midwinter of the Spirit - book cover picture

This book began for me, a fascinating journey through Phil Rickman's writing. The real strength of this book, and Phil Rickman's previous books, is that they stay totally believable, even as they take you on a journey into the depths of spooky rituals, mysterious deaths and dangerously creepy people.
Merrily Watkins is a normal, thirty-something single parent, who also happens to be an Anglican priest and diocesan exorcist. She is at once a believable and vulnerable hero, relying more on her wits than on any supernatural powers.
Exciting, intriguing, fascinating and scary - I loved it!

All I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger: The Shocking True Story of Troma Studios - book cover picture

Lloyd Kaufman's book is a great example of what happens when you give a pen to someone not only funny, but extremely intelligent. His book not only tells you how to make an independent film, but also gives you enthusiasm to make one. He truly is an inspiration to every young independent filmmaker because he knows the trials and tribulations of an industry that is not only tough, but doesn't want him around. He loves film, so if you truly love film, pick up this book. It is not only a how to, but a why do it. Sincerely, Seth Sweeney

The most nearly perfectly true fiction

Book title: After Rain : Stories

After Rain : Stories - book cover picture

In 1995, I bought William Trevor's "The Collected Stories" based on strong reviews. He won me over (and over and over) with almost every story in the bountiful tome. Great stories tell me truths that having heard them seem always to have been at the tip of my soul's tongue but just not quite spoken to myself. Trevor speaks such truths with almost every story. "After Rain" has some of the best ever. Read it. If it delights you and stings you as it did me, then be sure to go on to "The Collected Stories." A word of personal warning: Trevor's novels are very, very different from his short stories. Do not make assumptions about his stories if you have only read his novels. The short story is clearly more suitable for sharing his sharp insights.

Destroys the "food scolds" with truth and humor

Book title: The Man Who Ate Everything (Vintage)

The Man Who Ate Everything (Vintage) - book cover picture

A very refreshing look at the way the food police are trying to control what we eat through fear and intimidation. For instance, his coverage on saturated fats, salt, and sugar provide the only sane view of the subject that I've seen (the sane view does include, of course, Julia Child). The "foodie" parts are very well done, and I compare him very favorably with the writers I'm familiar with in the foodie magazines like Saveur and Gourmet. He is willing to treat the subject with fewer hushed tones (such as dining in Japan) than the gee whiz crowd. The humor is fun, especially now that I noted in the credits that he wrote for the Lampoon. It shows. Food is too important a subject to take too extremely seriously. The usual biases show through, such as his living in New York City, but he dishes it out with great humor and a willingness to travel to some of the truly important food places in the world and the US.If you care about what you eat, this is a great read.

Another Winner!!

The Corset Diaries - book cover picture

Another delightful winner from Katie MacAlister. She takes a fresh idea and runs with it. This book was a funny, sexy read. Be forewarned there are some laugh out loud moments. The Corset Diaries also has some deeply moving moments. It is wonderful to see a heroine who is comfortable with herself even though she isn't a perfect 100lb 18 year old dewy eyed virgin. The supporting characters are full bodied and nicely add to the story. Shall I tell you about the asparagus scene?, nah you will have to read this for yourself.
