The Last Time They Met : A Novel - book cover picture

Having just read the review, by Michelle De La Haye, on the novel by Anita Shreve, Where or When I agree with her completly. The build up of the two central characters, is not only engaging but compulsive reading. The ending stayed with me for many days after I had completed the novel. To say that it is just a love story could be true but what made it so special for me, was the way in which the songs of the two lovers featured (when they first met) was followed through as a central theme. Especially the title, "Where or When" So often a song can take me back to a moment in my life and for that moment, I can relive the emotions I was feeling. Superb novel, but the ending could for me, (feel good) have been so much easier to live with if it could have been just that....feel good. David.

Best of the series so far!

Laws Of The Blood #5: Heroes (Laws of the Blood) - book cover picture

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the other books in the series just fine, but this one brings together the best characters from them, and in such a great place -- Las Vegas, where even a dragon isn't out of place. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters that had operated more isolated in the other books. The plot was strong as well. The main characters had a lot at stake (pun intended) here. I recommend it to any reader of vampire fiction, or any reader of speculative fiction!

The Winter of Our Discontent (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) - book cover picture

This book, along with Steinbeck's EAST OF EDEN, are the two best things he ever wrote. It took me a while to get into WINTER, but once I did, I couldn't stop reading. I was absolutely overwhelmed at the ending, just as I usually am with this writer's great finishes. If you've never read anything by this author, this is a good place to start. Would also recommend THE BARK OF THE DOGOWOD for another really great read.

How to get a Degree by not working.

Film Art: An Introduction - book cover picture

Way back when I went to University in dear old Blighty. My degree was Film,Tv and Radio Studies, and despite my total lack of application, or to be frank attendance, I graduated with honours and a unhealthy infatuation with Wine, Women and Song. There are two reasons why I graduated, 1 I have the ability to retain information, 2 Film Art by Boardwell and Thompson. Quite frankly the best text book in the history of further education. It is simple enough for the most inexperienced of students, but also it's depth and coverage is enough to give a basic foundation in the most complex of film theory. God bless you Boardwell & Thompsen, and if anyone out there wants both a degree and liver problems as a result of University, BUY THIS BOOK

Good overview

Digital Photography: Answers! Certified Tech Support (Osborne's Answers Series) - book cover picture

The book explains how digital cameras work, what the differences are between various technologies and gives you ideas about what to look for in purchasing a digital camera. There are chapters explaining the various camera options and their proper use and comparing them to 35 mm tools. There's information on composition and lighting and other standard photographic concepts, but the author also looks into batteries and battery life, photo manipulation software (Paint Shop Pro is the program used in the descriptions), incorporating photos into Power Point and scanning photos. The book would be perfect for someone who had a little bit of experience using a scanner or digital camera and uses Paint Shop Pro. For others, there is still a good deal of solid information within.

The Woman That I Am: The Literature and Culture of Contemporary Women of Color - book cover picture

I first came upon this book in a senior seminar in college. At the time I apppreciated it for the varying voices of women. I was able to see women like and unlike myself and be warmed by the fire of this sisterhood. I had no idea that when I wrote my Master's thesis how important this text would be. Unfortunately there are few anthologies like this one that covers so many bases so effectively. Madison has collected well known and lesser known talents into an invaluable research tool. It should be required reading for anyone interested in stepping into the world of writing by women of color.

An Important Work

One Best Way Frederick Winslow Taylor - book cover picture

I picked up this book because I wanted to have a better understanding of Frederick Taylor and Scientific Management. I got it. Although at times Kanigel's sentence structure got a bit convoluted, particularly at the beginning, I found the book fascinating and useful to the end. One of the major premises of the book is that we owe, or wish we did not owe, to Taylor the driving , amost relentless beat of our own age to be efficient, to use every spare moment. He revolutionized the world by combining elements that had existed for years into a coherent whole. We live with that legacy, for good or evil. As a manager and as someone concerned with organizations, I found the book not only good reading, but useful in thinking about my own work and how I view what I do. I highly recommend it!

Rumble Fish is one of the best books I had ever read. Rusty James is the leader of small, gang in an industrial town. He lives in the shadow of the memory of his absent, older brother, The Motorcycle Boy. His mother has left, his father drinks, school has no meaning for him and his relationships are shallow. He is drawn into one more gang fight and the events that follow begin to change his life. At the end he finally learns to break free from others' expectations, and his own inner demons.
