Robert Penner's Programming Macromedia Flash MX - book cover picture

Incredible... I have read countless books on flash and specially on actionscript. Each has built up my understanding. This book has finally put it all into perspective. The examples are completely explained down to the thought process involved in coming up with the solution. Being that most flash designers come from a visual background, the book explains programming in a visual manner. Details like relating the makeup of an object with real life visual metaphors. The style of writing is to the point and at times witty and engaging... If you want to understand how the masters do what they do, you will not put down this book... great job...

Prey - book cover picture

this was highly intersting and suspenceful. Jack is a lovable character, and one roots for him, through this weird ordeal he got himself into. The enemy is hard to evade, since it can be invisible, unless it forms into a big black swarm. It's kinda like the 1986 Chernobly accident, the invisible radioactive rays that killed so many people. The silent and invisible enemy! You think it's not there, untill you see what happens to ya!

Before the Storm (Star Wars: The Black Fleet Crisis, Book 1) - book cover picture

I love this novel! I picked it up a couple of days ago AGAINST the advice of some nay-saying friends and couldn't put it down until it was fininshed. The characterization is deep and richly textured and Princess Leia in particular shines, which impressed me a great deal becuase I feel quite often her character suffers the most in the novels for lack of understanding of her personality. I also liked the fact that there is hardly a chapter of this book that dosen't contain at least one of the main characters. A lot of times, authors are so infatuated with thier own creations, they'll dedicate chapter upon chapter to them. Not so with Kube-McDowell, who realizes I'm reading the novel to learn more about the characters I know and love(Luke, Leia, Lando, even Ackbar). It's well writing, interseting and talky(which I like. The movies aren't all action sequences, you know). Possibly my favorite SW book of all time!

The Gathering Storm - book cover picture

I don't see how anyone can have an intelligent understanding of the history of the 20th century without having read Churchill's "Second World War." It's a gigantic paradox that I suppose dates back to Homer or further that the horrific events of war can have such fascination when told by a master like Sir Winston. It would be hard to name a document to parallel this, however; recounted in such riveting detail by one of the world's great leaders.

Waiting for Godot - book cover picture

Thus far I have seen a number of excellant reviews for this play, and some less than credible ones. If someone has a problem about Beckett's view of humanity's existance then it is only because they are trapped in the very thing that Beckett insults. The man who works the nine to five shift then eats, sleeps, and does it again is the man who beckett implores to open his eyes. he is living a life of existential non-being(almost an oxymoron but not really). This play is not for children. It is not for those with A.D.D. It is not about the civil war. It is not about not being absurd but with being as absurd as life. I'm sorry I'm tired.

A perfect way to start "The Conversation" on atomic war

The Bomb and the General - book cover picture

This is a gentle first intoduction to the dreaded but inevitable talk in which a parent must reveal the realities of living in an age of nuclear weaponry. The illustrations and text are so superb that they are appropriate for any age, but do a particularly good job of introducing younger children to the dynamics of war. At the same time, the joyful ending makes it highly readable. It's made the top of my gift list.

Jaws - book cover picture

With all this raving maddness about how much jaws the book sucked, I DARE THEM to try and write something better. So the book wasn't completely centered on the shark. SO WHAT! I found the subplots to give the characters a little bit of edge. Near the last third of the book, when everyone falls apart, you can FEEL that tension. And after hooper's untimely death, you really feel the depression hanging in the air, sinking into your mind and heart. It was a really fun book to read. My only quibble was that the characters are so sour toward eachother. They're soooo BITTER. Lighten up Benchely!

The Lion's Game - book cover picture

A hilarious book based around high action drama. A terrorist is killing people in America. No one is able to find him. The ex-NYPD on the case (now working with the FBI) is determined to apprehend him. The author lightens the blow of seriousness with John's sense of humor. You'll be seriously spellbound one minute and laughing the next. At first, I didn't think I would like The Lion's Game, but quickly changed my mind after the first few pages. An excellent read!

Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses: Shifting the Focus from Teaching to Learning - book cover picture

Huba and Freed bridge the gap between assessment and student-centered teaching and learning. Throughout the text the authors include reflection questions to trigger thinking and changes in mental models. While the thrust of the book is conceptual, there are many practical suggestions for implementation in areas such as learning outcomes, rubrics, and other related areas of assessment. While compatible with other treatments of assessment, this is a unique perspective.
