Marcovaldo: or the Seasons in the City - book cover picture

In 1972 Helen Barolini was teaching a techniques in translation course at the Trinity College Rome campus and she had us read Marcovaldo nella citta and translate some of the stories. She also invited William Weaver, the translator, to our class, after he had seen our rough drafts. It was wonderful to work on the book in the middle of Rome. I think The Moon and Gnac is one of my favorite stories, simply about a girl experiencing the impersonality of neon signage.

A good book for the more imaginative reader

Book title: Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy)

Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy) - book cover picture

If you apreciate a less direct approach and a more open endedstyle of writing, then Garth Nix has got something for you. _Sabriel_ is an excelently crafted work that lets the reader create as much as the author. Nix's characters are all deeper than they appear, with attributes that surface in the narrative only when the need arises. ... The plot is typical fantasy fare (young hero(ine) taken from home, forced on long journey, yadda yadda yadda) but rather than a tired repeat, the gradual unfolding of the characters, whether it is the shamed Touchstone or the recalcitrant Mogget, pulls you along almost to the point of forgetting the purpose behind their travels. These characters are three dimensional as opposed to "cookie-cutter" warriors and wizards one might find in some of the more popular fare. These characters, coupled with the sheer creativeness of Nix's necromantic world, will satisfy the more refined reader of Fantastic literature. ...

Reach for Tomorrow (One Last Wish) - book cover picture

I loved this book. It is my favorite Lurlene McDaniel book, without a doubt. I'd also have to say that it is probably one of my very favorite books. I know these books are directed at a younger age group and I started reading them when I was younger, but they are the kind of books that stay with you. Anyway, about the book... It really does a great job of tying together her other OLW books. I'm sure I'm not the only person who was wondering what happened to everyone after A Season for Good-Bye. In summary, this is a great book, a must read if you love Lurlene McDaniel's other books, even if you feel out have "outgrown" them! :)

She's Come Undone - book cover picture

I read this book after I graduated from high school, just before setting off for college. It astounded me at the time. I had never read anything like it.

Dolores is so REAL. She doesn't have a prefect life, she has a REAL life and real problems and a REAL body. Wally Lamb really understands women.

I recommend this book to all of my female friends, and even my boyfriend read it and liked it!

One Summer - book cover picture

This was one sit on the end of your seat book. The romance and suspence were excellent. I was working in my yard today and had the book with me. When I needed a rest, I would stop and read a chapter. Well, this particular time I happen to start on chapter 50 and could not put the book down until 13 chapters later. It was that exciting. Naturally, I did not get the yardwork done, but I did finish the book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes romance/mystery. It's a winner. It deserves 20 or more stars

At last

Borges: Collected Fictions - book cover picture

I have long stared covetously at the enormous volumes of Borges Collected Fiction that have adorned the bookshelves of the Spanish speakers I have met while I turned again and again to the slim volumes that had been available in English prior to this edition. The translation does seem a bit weak in points, however, the appearance of Borges in any form is cause for intense celebration. He is truly one of the greatest writers I've ever encountered. Along with Joyce, Musil and Gaddis he is among the most innovative and generous writers of this century. Giving him only Five Stars seems to somehow undermine his genius.

One Hundred Years of Solitude (Oprah's Book Club) - book cover picture

My all-time favorite book (before this one): "A Confederacy Of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. As a resident of New Orleans, LA for 21 years, I have revered John Kennedy Toole's work as a signpost for the future of literary genius. Walker Percy helped bring 'Confederacy' to the marketplace because he saw Toole's magical view of the world.

Most who revere '100 Years' will think me absurd, but there is a magical quality to 'Confederacy' which mirrors the yellow butterflies of '100 years'. Please consider these _so disparate works_ together. They are both ___GENIUS___. "100 Years" clearly out-writes "Confederacy", but they are DAMN CLOSE.

The Sopranos Family Cookbook: As Compiled by Artie Bucco - book cover picture

This book is one of those clever ideas that makes you want to say "Why didn't I think of that before?" There's no shortage of reference and pics from everybody's favorite HBO mob family, but the recipes in here are genuine, wonderful Italian food. But the best part? Somehow, the recipes in here make you look GOOD no matter how skilled a cook you are. I can tell you now that I'm in the less talented bracket to put it mildly, but the recipes in here have the virtue of being eye-catching and flavorful (incredible use of spices) while not being too difficult to put together. A rare combination. Definitely a book to grab whenever you can.
