Baseball: The People's Game - book cover picture

Baseball: The People's Game is the third volume in the series of this famous work and the best of the three books. It's about the way people played amateur and semipro ball all over the country, in schools and colleges, on sandlots, even in prisons and on reservations. It includes five chapters on early women's baseball and of course material on the black clubs and leagues. I'm the wife and assistant of the late author, Dr. Harold Seymour, the historian of baseball. To read more about his baseball books, visit my web site, http://www.DorothyJaneMills.com. Soon I will be opening a new web site about his work: www.HaroldSeymour.com

Excellent book for programmers coming from other languages

Just Java 2 - book cover picture

I'm a graduate student in CSE, adept in C and familiar with C++. I got collossially lucky by picking this book to learn Java. The explanations were almost always exactly the amount of information I needed. The parts of the syntax that were similar to C++ were easy to skim through and find the differences; the examples were informative. The chapters give you enough knowledge that you have a solid idea how a certain thing works in java (networking, file I/O, swing), so that you can learn details from the API documentation, but not so much that it's hard to read. Excellent starting point.

The Nanny Diaries: A Novel - book cover picture

Obviously, this is not the Great American Novel - but damn it, it's FUN! It's fun, it's frothy, and it's a pure and utter delight. This book captures a particular (and deliciously awful, yet mercifully small) segment of New York's population, albeit with a very sharp and exceptionally funny bite. (By the way: don't be misled by the spam suggesting that you read Birdseeds instead of The Nanny Diaries - the recommendation of the former is nothing more than a blatant attempt by the author (of the former) to cash in on the success of a far more successful and popular author.)

Girl, Interrupted (Faber and Faber Screenplays) - book cover picture

After Susanna Kaysen is sent to a mental hospital in 1968, at age 18, she begins to "vent." The entire book is her outlook on the hospital, giving the reader an image of what the hospital is like. There sometimes seems to be no real plot, that she is doing nothing but putting her feelings onto paper, but that what makes it so beautiful... so poetic. She vividly defines the group of odd characters, bringing then to life. This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read.

Brian's Winter - book cover picture

Have you ever thought you were lost or have been lost? Well, Brian Robeson's plane crash landed in the Canadian Wilderness. To survive he must rely on his intelligence, his instincts, and one tool: a hatchet. He must do all of this facing the Canadian fall and winter. The genre of this story is a realistic fiction. There is nothing in this story that cannot happen.
I thought this was a great book because just like all of Gary Paulsen's other book this one is on survival. It was one of those books where you just cannot put it down. The style of writing in this story is what really sets it off from other books in this genre. Gary Paulsen describes everything that Brian does as if he was right there next to him. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a suspenseful story, which they can't put down.

Secret Circle Vol I: The Initiation (Secret Circle, Vol I) - book cover picture

I absolutely loved this story! When I first saw the cover, I hesitated. I didn't know how this story would turn out. I'm so glad I read it! I was thrown into Cassie's world from the beginning and got to see her find out she's a witch with powers and becomes a member of the Secret Circle. I loved the romance between Cassie and Adam! The way Ms. Smith described their passion for each other was wonderful! I loved the conflict with Cassie and Faye - and their struggle to win the fight of good over evil. Good thing I bought all 3 books together, as soon as I finished the 1st one, I picked up the 2nd one right away and was not dissappointed. Its a worldwind of love, mystery and magic! Don't miss out on a great trilogy!!

Delightful sequel!

Howliday Inn - book cover picture

The sequel to "Bunnicula" follows the misadventures of Harold and Chester, when they are taken to a kennel where Chester dubs "Howliday Inn." There, they meet a pair of weird daschunds, a crazy cat, a messy love triangle between a bull dog and two French poodles, and one of the kennel-keepers who has an obsession with Louise, one of the French poodles. She turns up missing, and Chester and Harold set to resolve the mystery of Louise's disappearance. James Howe admirably captures the essence of Chester and Harold by himself, and this sequel is also a delightful novel worth reading.

An Elegant Piece of Mystery Fiction

Book title: Some Lie and Some Die (An Inspector Wexford Mystery)
Rating: 5/5

Some Lie and Some Die (An Inspector Wexford Mystery) - book cover picture

"Some Lie and Some Die" is a superbly crafted mystery novel. It's short--in pages, and in time-line, and it's not overly burdened with plotting or diverting details. It is, in a word, elegant. The events (a murder, a missing girl, a palette of suspects) are set against the backdrop of a rock concert, complete with egotistical stars and fawning sycophants, spoiled fans and irate neighbors. But underlying it all are the basic human failings of self-absorption and greed and it is these motivations which lead to the horror and the desperation of the characters and their actions. Rendell is, as usual, an incisive observer of the dark side of humanity, and a writer who can portray the consequences with the short, deft strokes of a master craftsman.

A sad but well informed report on China's reality

The Tyranny of History : The Roots of China's Crisis (Penguin History) - book cover picture

The virtue that this book has for me is that it had helped me a lot in better understanding the Chinese culture and traditions and, at the same time, the book offers a wide and valorative review of different aspects of Chinese life. The tirany of History is not just a title for a book. It seems to be too a permanent experience for millions of Chinese and other related peoples, who seem to be caught in a circular history. In particular, this book is a denunciation of some aspects of traditional Chinese culture and history that deny individuals their rights, freedoms and vital possibilities. It is an explanation of why China seem now to be so much opened to the world and how simplistic are assumptions that the Chinese leadership have realized the virtues of market economy and that the economic reforms carried out in the People's Republic are conducive automatically to a democratic regime in the future by the very evolution of society.

Thomas Aquinas with an British Accent

Book title: God Matters
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
God Matters - book cover picture

McCabe is the godfather of all of those who read Aquinas through the eyes of Wittgenstein. The essays collected here -- covering everything from the doctrine of God to class struggle and Christian love -- are deceptively user-friendly. McCabe writes in an engaging and conversational style, but once the reader is engaged he or she will find ideas that bear repeated pondering. I highly recommend this book especially for those who think Aquinas is a boring and "safe" thinker.
