Hell in a Very Small Place: The Siege of Dien Bien Phu (Da Capo Paperback) - book cover picture

Non-fiction books can be dry and tedious sometimes. Especially books on military history. But I could not put this book down. It is a very good read. Very suspenseful. Grim yet enlightening. Like C. Ryan's A BRIDGE TOO FAR, it just captures your attention. I am of French/Vietnamese/Chinese heritage and come away as a better person after reading this masterpiece. I have the utmost respect for both adversaries. Fall has written a very human account. I highly recommend it. Especially for persons like me who yearn for pieces of their history.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants) - book cover picture

This is one of the best books I've read. I didn't like the beginning of the book about finding the jeans and how their mothers had all been friends so it took me a long time to get into the book. My friends kept telling me to finish the book and I'm glad that I read it to the end. I love Carmen and Bridget. I'm glad Carmen broke the window. Bridget surprised me but her story also made me sad. I like all the stories and how they wove together.

intriguing and provocative

Book title: The Handmaid's Tale
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Handmaid's Tale - book cover picture

This book tells the story of "Offred," a woman in a futuristic and highly repressive society. Women are relegated to either Handmaids, who bear young for the Wives, who are considered morally superior; and the "Aunts," who train the Hadmaidens and uphold the scriptures of the society's religion. (It is hinted that a chemical disaster has left many women unable to breed.)

Offred was caught, along with her husband and daughter, as they tried to escape to Canada. Right now, she must find a way to live in a society that prevents women from reading and doing more than housework and giving birth. Her world is further complicated by the fact that it is difficult to tell between friend and possibly future accomplice, and undercover spy.

Intriguing and thought-provoking, the book will stay with you long after you finish the last page.

The Shining (Signet) - book cover picture

I have to start this off by saying I am not a big Stephen King fan. That said, this book is nothing short of a masterpiece. The character of Jack Torrance is brilliantly revealed and expanded throughout the novel. Most of the people who gave this book a low rating probably wouldn't know a good book-or great one, for that matter-if it jumped up and bit them on the a$$. Most likely they see John Grisham(who i actually like) on the same level as Charles Dickens. What King does so wonderfully in this book is make his characters seem so real that you are able to connect with the emotional and physical pain they are put through. I recommend this book to anyone who says horror novels are not "real" literature.

Sandry's Book Great!

Circle Of Magic #01 : Sandry's Book (Circle Of Magic) - book cover picture

Sandry's Book, the first in Tamora Pierce's new series Circle of Magic, is definitely a new winner. This book really shows that even though people can be extremly different it does not mean that they can not get along. The book takes place on a world were magic is common, but only certain kinds. It is the story of four young people and their struggle with both friendship and magic. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good fantasy read.

The Keep of Fire (The Last Rune, Book 2) - book cover picture

I read both books in the series and they were great! Anthony has all the talent to be someone to reckon with in the fantasy field. These novels are the real deal and has all the trimmings for a major fantasy epic:magic, intrigue, menace and it is dripping with atmosphere. While other fantasy authors write continue to crank out books that are clones to the original(like Robert Jordan) Anthony's books are unique to each other and only share the same characters.Do yourself a favor and read these books! The only thing else I have to say I hope the author writes faster because I can't wait to get my hands on book 3!

The Outsiders - book cover picture

I have loved this book for a long time. I first read it in 1984 and was always struck by the strength of the characters. Here is what I just noticed. Johnny is the Christ figure of this novel. He saves Ponyboy and the children trapped in the church and dies for this. When he leaves the church on their first morning he signs his initials in the dust of the church floor "J.C." Johnny Cade, Jesus Christ.

Nineteen Eighty-Four (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics S.) - book cover picture

As a sophomore in highschool, I read this book as a requirement as outside reading. I couldn't put it down! The concepts it talked about kept me thinking for hours, and I still think about them now! Since then, I have read the book two more times, and still find new topics to discuss about government, privacy, and social orders. If you like literature, history, and society, you must read this book!

Is it possible to explain physics so simple?

Book title: A Brief History of Time
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
A Brief History of Time - book cover picture

I have completed my study of metallurgy some six years ago and I have listened many hours of physics in my life (quite usual, not quantum!) and even that sort of physics seemed sometimes incredibly complicated (due to not very good professors I had). I have once seen a demonstration of mathematics used in quantum physics and it literally frightened me. Because I know that it is hard to reveal knowledge in a simple way to listeners which are very inferior to you in certain field, I think Hawking's work is incredible. It reads very logically, clearly and though it talks about science, that is unreachably complicated for usual mortals, we can sense the directions and thinking of men, who work in this and try to unveil the mysteries of universe. If you are interested in universe, you just got to have it.
