Parma: A Year in Serie A - book cover picture

This is an excellent, wonderful snapshot of the crazy, life-and-death world of Italian soccer. You don't have to love soccer and you don't even have to love sports to love this book. It has drama, personality, grit, emotion, and, above all, a ring of joy throughout it. Some books you read to learn; others you read for joy. This is the rare work that lets you do both, page after page. I was walking through a northern Italian village one evening when Italy was playing a selection game for the last Coppa. "Where is everyone?" my wife asked me. Suddenly the entire countryside exploded in a joyous roar. Italy had just scored. In seconds, the street was full of kids and parents laughing, hugging and jumping on their motorini to hook horns. It was a moment of magic, and the good Mr. Burke manages to catch much of that spirito in these pages. Viva La Roma!

A Canticle for Leibowitz (Bantam Spectra Book) - book cover picture

Walter M.Miller Jr. offers us a look into the years of a post-apocolypic world run by gangs and highwaymen. The work begins in an almost medevial time, with the clergy protecting the pre- deluge spoils of Rome with a fervor. The day to day machinations of these poor acolytes with their dedications is to look into the past instead of the future. The appearance of the strange "Benjamin" heralds a journey into that future that none knows or would care to see. Walter M. Miller Jr. handles this tale with such aplomb that we are led through hundreds of years of time and changing circumstance with a smooth, unveiled cadence that lulls the reader into a calm look into a history that never was-until the last chapters where we realize that technology has been reborn in its most monsterous form-and that it's all about to happen again. Hence the title for my humble take on a CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ.

The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-first Century - book cover picture

I am a lowley civilian. Many of the reviews here seem to come learned insiders. Experts in the field need read no furhter. I found the book excellent and thought provoking. The thought process that goes into the Pentagon's budgeting process, and how it is/was tied to the Pentagon's view of the world and potential enemies was of interest. One can argue that 2 or 3 or 11 different kinds of forces are needed to do the job of winning early 21st century battles, war and then the peace, but the author was the first to get me, an average guy, to focus on the very different needs of our military today vs. 10 years ago in a comprehensive, well reasoned manner. I recommend this book to those that wish to get a peak behind the curtain at the Pentagon and the Naval War College and plans for military action in the 21 st century

The Hanging Garden: An Inspector Rebus Novel (Inspector Rebus Series/Ian Rankin) - book cover picture

The book Dead Souls was my first Inspector Rebus book and I thought it was excellent. I bought it on holiday in Australia and could not put it down until I had finished it. The stories were very real and the situations very descriptive. The plots were good with plenty of twists and I did not work out the endings for most of them until the end. It was good how the different investigations overlapped and the story kept moving at pace. There were no chapters where I found the story becoming slow and I was not tempted to skip a few paragraphs. The characters were real although he brought people together from differing backgrounds, cultures and countries. The released prisoner's character was scary and at times the book was almost disturbing. I will now go on to read other Inspector Rebus novels.

Carry On, Jeeves - book cover picture

Previous: The Inimitable JeevesWhile some of the stories in this collection pre-date The Inimitable Jeeves, it was published as a collection two years later, and so I'm calling it the second book in the series. The stories in this set are all stand-alone and unrelated. While many of them are charming, there is one that stands out far and away more noticeably than the others - the ingenious Bertie Changes His Mind. I will not give away the wonderful twist of this story, except to say that Wodehouse pulls it off with flying colors, and it is surprisingly hilarious. If the first couple paragraphs throw you a little, keep reading - you'll catch on, and you will be utterly charmed. Another notable story in this collection is The Rummy Affair of Old Biffy, in which Bertie looks like a genius in comparison.Next: Very Good, Jeeves

The Last Day - book cover picture

This is one of themost authentically original novels I've evr read. The plotting is intricate and suspensful and the story is spellbinding all the way thru. After reading it for the 2nd time, I realized just how much I'd missed the 1st. The author has hidden losts of little clues throughout that aren't really necessary to a full appreciation of the story, but add lots of spice. Some are very funny once you realize what's going on. I have couple questions that I couldn't figure out. Is the cardinal, Antonio di Concerci truly evil, or is he merely following the dictates of his conscience. It seems it could go either way. An interestng character. Also, at the begining of the story, the "frail white arms" that rescue Jeza from the explosion--who do they belong to. Great book and I cant wait for the next from this author.

Visual C++ 6: The Complete Reference - book cover picture

My step-father once wrote a book for Osborne that was 600 pages. I know the amount of work he put into it. This book is 1000+ pages - what a feat.I bought this book because I have been programming in C and needed to convert to C++. The authors did a good job of showing examples in both C and C++, so that people like me could make the transition.Overall, the book was nothing but excellant. The authors posted their code on Osborne's web site, so it was really time saving when it came to testing their programs.I did not find any technical errors in the book (one or two typos), found the style and manner of presentation great and really learned how to get my C++ code up and running.
