Vintage Scarpetta, Vintage Cornwell - her best to date!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Audio Cassette
To her usual blend of supense, mystery and fascinating autopsies, Patricia Cornwell adds strength to her story telling skills with a superb probing of Scarpetta's character. Both author and protagonist seem to have reached a state of maturity. Any reader who has followed Kay Scarpetta's story from the early days when niece Lucy was a mere child and Marino was much healthier, will not be disappointed with the latest chapter in Scarpetta's life. The heroine's weaknesses and fears are realistically defined and the story is brought to a surprising, emotional and skilful conclusion.

Funny and heart warming

This book was recommened to me by my college Pysch professor. I thought that it was one of the best books that I have ever read in a really long time. I bought it for my mother and then read it and highlighted the parts I knew would touch her soul. My favorite chapter would have to be the one where Rebecca talks about wanting to be like her poor friend, and how she hurts herself because she needs to be a good Catholic. The parts of the Mother inflicting abuse were done so wonderfully, it is not said over and over or with any graphic detail, but the reader still has a great idea of what is happening in that house. I would reccomend this book and the on that follows, The Ya-Ya Sisterhood. They are wonderful reading, especailly for mothers and daughters who are trying to understand each other without knowing the past.

So good I can't wait to read the next one!

The Reckless One swept me up into a world of wicked rogues and regal ladies. Raine is the ultimate scoundrel hero, wounded in his soul yet shrugging off his troubles as he sweeps into Scotland and romances the mysterious lady he finds haunting his castle home. They don't make men like that anymore, and probably it's a good thing because my heart won't take it. Can't wait for the next installment of McClairen's Isle.

Baseball strangles reality
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Coover's novel represents the supreme good and the ultimate evil of baseball: Reality and fantasy respectively and interchangably. Confused? You should be. Coover's last chapter (8 - somehow conjuring the idea that it is, and therefore baseball is, incomplete) muddles, mangles, and meshes reality and fiction with fiction, turning baseball into "what it is": history, mythology, mind-altering, obsession, and finally an unrecognizable conglomoration of rituals and ritual-hungry beasts. For all the profundity and confundity of chapter 8, Coover's vision of baseball is undeniably chilling: A reflection of the social atmosphere out of which the novel came. If 1968 is not the most exultant yet the most shattering years of the civil rights movement, then baseball is only a game.

For What It Is...
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
For what the book is, or what it set out to be rather, it is a great work. I, personally, was raised a Republican and come from a very right wing family. I think we all draw from both this book and Michael Moore's books what we may. I agree, America is in trouble. What I disagree with are the people judging the books before they read them. Buy them, borrow them from the library (hey, it's free) and then develop your opinions instead of attacking the book prior to reading it, (not that any reviewer here is doing so). I recommend that you read this book and Michael Moore's books whether you reside in the left or the right wing, because they will ultimately give you a better idea of where you stand politically than if you only read the one you thought mostly agreed with, you might even change parties.

A Mother's love and hope for her troubled son
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Even if you don't have family members with bipolar dynfunction, this book will give you insight to the disease. It's very easy to think of a celebrity idyllically. I am amazed that Danielle Steel could write such beautiful love stories when her own life was full of so much turmoil. This is another of Daniell's love story--but it's a true one--the love a Mother has for her son and the unlimited efforts and extents she will go to to try and save him (in this case, from himself). Danielle did a wonderful job of capturing Nick's "bright light" and sharing it with the world.

Engaging, riveting history of Jesus and his times!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Audio CD
Meticulously documented and lovingly rendered, this third in Thomas Cahill's "Hinges of History" series is excellent! The ancient Mediterranean world of Alexander the Great and Augustus Caeser comes to life vividly under the spell of Cahill's pen. We understand the world that Jesus of Nazereth better because we understand the politics and culture of the period. I was raised on the Christian gospels but never before understood them and their writers as I have come to understand them after reading this book. Jesus, Peter, Mark, Matthew, Luke, John, and Paul became "real" people to me. Even if you are not a Christian or have rejected the doctrine of Jesus, you come away from this book with a new respect for his message and its effect on the ages.

A Western in a category all in its own
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
My father named me after the book's main character and perhaps that's what led me to write my own Western novel ("Bounties"). Of course, "Shane" can't be topped and is a unique Western in its own category. While I rely on humor to tell my stories, Jack Schaefer paints a picture of a man trying to escape his violent past and eventually has to accept who he is and that his destiny is something he can't escape. This book is not just a Western but a beautiful tale about growing up, boyhood dreams, and heroes that emerge from wide and unforgiving landscapes. Thanks to Schaefer for giving us a book that continues to inspire so many people.
