Very moving story!

Teeth of the Dog - book cover picture

This book is a knockout. The story is about coming to terms with the death of someone you love, and I must say, having experienced grief myself, Jill Ciment got it exactly right. She writes about grief in all its permutations, the anger, the sadness, and the selfishness. I also loved the story, fast paced and exciting and very funny at times. Setting it on the South Seas Island of Vanuu, only adds to the feelings of displacement and loss.

John D.'s best? Maybe.

Book title: Condominium
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Condominium - book cover picture

I hesitate to call Condominium John D. MacDonald's best novel, not yet having plowed through his entire canon. I will say, though, that it is the best of his novels that I have read to date. The story's build and momentum is remarkable, simulating the steady gathering of storm clouds in a hurricane like the one that brings this novel to its climax. From page one, the reader knows that trouble is brewing, and after the introduction of several shady characters bent on exploiting the masses lured to the American Eden, you begin to crave a good comeuppance for the corrupt.Only, life has an odd way of punishing not only the rotten, but the innocent who cross their path. MacDonald is always true to the social reality of Florida and, make no mistake, this book is as timely as when it was first printed. Finely written and one of MacDonald's most engaging reads.

Alice Walker is a true expert on the life of poor Celie

Book title: The Color Purple
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Color Purple - book cover picture

It is a total tragedy that poor Celie is treated like that by both her dad and her husband. It is sad that she is forced to leave school when she doesn't want to. It is sad that she is forced to give up her children to her father when she doesn't really understand what is going on. It is sad that she and her sister end up being seperated. Abd it is sad that her husband and his children treat her the way he does. The only bit that isn't totally sad is when she meets Shug, and she is happy. This is one of the best books I've ever read.

Sophie's World : A Novel About the History of Philosophy - book cover picture

'Sophie's World' contains much information about philosophy and the idea of mixing it with a fantastic story about Sophie Amundsen is great.
It makes philosophical ideologies the whole lot more bearable than those shown in boring dictionaries. It really made me become interested in the issue. Because of that book I wasn't able to learn for a Physics test until I finished reading. Unfortunately, it was too late. I got '1' (equal to an American 'F').

Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Revised Edition) - book cover picture

This book was such an eye opener for me. It taught me so much about my body and how it functions. I feel like I have more control now that I know what's normal and what's not. I think this should be required reading for every female. It's definetly worth reading whether you're trying to get pregnant, trying to not get pregnant, or just plain want to know more about your body. Plus, it's written in a simple enough way that if you are using it for pregnancy acheivement or avoidance, the method is easy to understand. I read it in two nights.

Lose Yourself and Be Happy That You Did...

Assassin's Apprentice - book cover picture

After being away from Fantasy for some years now, I have had the most wonderful reading experiences of late. Due, in large part, by picking up those imaginary fantastic reigns and reading in the genre that was my first love. I was introduced to the works of Guy Gavriel Kay and found myself wanting... no, thirsting for more. Robin Hobb's name and series came up through searches on Amazon and I have to say it was the best surprise of 2000 for me. Robin Hobb's Assassin series is an extremely well written story with characters that touch you and always find a place in your heart. I can't say more about this book, other than, READ IT. If you like adventure, if you like fantasy, if you like honor, if you like nobility, if you just want to have a great time, pick up this book/series. You won't be dissappointed.

K?ng gives the Christian faith some modern zeal

Book title: On Being a Christian
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
On Being a Christian - book cover picture

K?ng is an amazing author and his perspective is quite envigorating. I came across this book during a time in my life when I was about to give up my Christian faith. It brought me into a fresh, living perspective and out of narrow fundamentalism once and for all. Though in his examination of Jesus' time, he tends to be too stereotypical in typecasting groups in the Jesus' time, it is an amazing paradigm to view Jesus from. I would criticize the overly eschatalogical vision he has of Jesus that he seems to get from Schweitzer. Lastly, his understanding of being a Christian as being radically human is beautiful and moving.

'til Death do us part

Book title: Obsidian Butterfly
Rating: 5/5

Obsidian Butterfly - book cover picture

As soon as I found out what this book was about, or rather WHO it was about, I had to read it. Twice. It was so satistfying. To hell with Richard and Jean-Claude, Edward is the sexiest fella in this series. Finally I get some answers about him, and his life is wilder than I could ever have imagined! This book brings together all the elements that I love most in this series: Anita's tougher-than-nails additude, which she fully deserves, Edward's sexy sociopathic anti-personality, with new depth, and incredible other-worldly monsters bent on wreaking havoc, killing humans, and in general making life unpleasant. I love Hamilton's wit and humor. I love the quick plots and I so enjoy the action! It's such a thrill, it gives me goosebumps. This is the book I've been waiting for from her. The series is great, and this is the pinnacle so far. I don't quite understand why that title, and not something more central to the book. Why not "'til Death do us part"?
