The Princess Diaries - book cover picture

Wow! I must say to Ms. Cabot that I'm quite impressed! It was written just as a 14 year old girl should write, making it very realistic and a real treat to read.
Mia Thermopolis has a pretty normal life. She's no beauty queen, true, and she is flunking Algebra, but she has a loving mother and a fun best friend. Then her father ruins her life by declaring that she's the next ruler of a small European country. Next, her paternal grandmother insists on making her look and act like the crown princess she is, which becomes the cause of a huge fight with her best friend. And now Mia has to battle the media every day at school, and on top of THAT, her mom is dating her Algebra teacher. Whew! Some girls have it tougher than others. But Mia reluctanly clunks her way through it all and comes out (somewhat) victoriously. A cute, breezy read. Five stars.

Great treatment of archaeological modelling and probability

Bayesian Approach to Intrepreting Archaeological Data (Statistics in Practice) - book cover picture

Although the later chapters are a bit difficult for the mathematically uninitiated, the early chapters provide a very readable and sensible introduction to the use of modelling and probability in archaeology. Those who have been intrigued by some ideas of Bayesian analysis but who found its concepts difficult to follow will benefit from this book. I think it should be in every serious archaeologist's library.

The Buffalo Tree - book cover picture

I loved this book. At the time I read this, a friend of mine was in a juvinile detetion center, and The Buffalo Tree painted a very vivid picture for me. Sura was one amazing kid....hes someone I wish I could be. He dealt with a lot, he learned a lot, and he became a very good person during those months. This was on of the most intriging books I've read, and I never went anywhere without it, always trying to find and extra two or three minutes to read some of it.This book ruled.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - book cover picture

What can I say - only that is was well worth the wait! For all of you who have never read any of the Potter books as if there are any such people, think of these books as a series of magical mysteries. I loved every minute of the audiobook. Man Ms. Rowling really can take you to another world.

It's delightful to see how Rowling can stay true to the feel of the previous books, and yet allow Harry and friends to mature. Must say though, this is a bit darker than the other ones, as some well known characters die. The ending of the book is frightening compared to the previous books but is a necessary evil for Harry as the older he gets, the more he learns about his past.

I believe Ms. Rowling had warned about the books becoming darker and darker. Can't wait for the next one. Again, and absolute perfect audiobook and Rob Inglis narration only magnifies the book 10 fold with his voice. He makes every character come to life. The perfect narrator.

Great for parents w/ teenagers - A MUST for fathers w/ girls

Get Out of My Life, but First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall?: A Parent's Guide to the New Teenager - book cover picture

An insightful book. Wolf helps us understand the differences between our growing up and that of today's adolescents. His perception of the different ways girls and boys react to conflict is very much on the mark.

As a single father raising a young girl it became very important to me. (Bachelor father is not as easy as TV made it look!)

Fathers of girls should read it closely - it really helps the male relate better to the emotions of the young girl. I lent the book to friends who passed it on to other fathers, all of them giving it positive reviews.

It was originally recommended to me by a friend who is a high school counsellor and said it was almost required reading in her school district.

The Roswell UFO Crash : What They Don't Want You to Know - book cover picture

The definitive book on Roswell. Over a year ago I leafed through it in a bookstore but slammed the covers shut. I also shut my eyes and ears. I just didn't want to hear it. I WANTED to believe in the Roswell case. Now, after reading it cover to cover, I can say with near-certainty that anyone who reads this book and STILL believes that an alien spacecraft crashed in New Mexico in 1947 is wrong

a piece of art

Geek Love - book cover picture

This book is a beautiful piece of art. Great descriptions of totally unusual characters. The story centers around a family of sideshow freaks. The mother intentionally ingested chemicals to produce the deformities in the offspring---if that sounds intriguing--you find this out in the first 2 pages and it gets stranger from there.
After reading this, I've tried to find more of her work, but unfortunately most bookstores don't carry her stuff (i guess i'll have to get it here). A unique, thought provoking read.

Incredible Book

Book title: Sphere
Rating: 5/5

Sphere - book cover picture

This book is tied with Crichton's "Andromeda Strain". It is incredible and you will never put it down, a little dramatic in some parts, but that's how Crichton is, and the suspense makes up for it. I have read 2 Crichton's: "The Andromeda Strain" and "Sphere"- both excellent. Also, watch the movie. As usual it is not as good as the book. It skips a lot of parts and "cheeses" it up a bit, but it's overall pretty interesting. READ THIS BOOK!

Vindication : A Life of Mary Wollstonecraft - book cover picture

This is a beautifully written biography about a fascinating woman. While she was a serious thinker in advance of her times, her life was of the stuff that would make a good romantic novel. The backdrop is not only England and Ireland, but the French Revolution and includes the machinations of various representatives of the fledgling United States stationed in Europe. No less interesting are the chapters on the women who were her biologic and ideological heirs including her second daughter who married Shelley and wrote Frankenstein.

Riders on the Storm : My Life with Jim Morrison and the Doors - book cover picture

Of all the biograghies I've read of The Doors, this one has to be up near the top of the list. John's first-hand accounts are far better than those writen by people who hadn't the slightest idea of what Jim was really about. Although John expressed many times that he was unhappy with the path the band was taking, and blamed it mainly on Jim, I believe he really did care for him. This book shows a glimpse of those fealings. It's a must read for all fans who wish to see The Doors open.
