Quintessential Vonnegut

Book title: Cat's Cradle

Cat's Cradle - book cover picture

'Cat's Cradle' may be the most Vonnegut book he has ever written. A typical page-turner that moves you along with the mix of science, religion and revolution delivered in his sly fashion. I hit my Vonnegut jag as a high school senior, devouring one after the other in a 2-month period. I went through that with Jerzy Kosinski, too, an author I would recommend to any Vonnegut fan. As with all of the Vonnegut books I rate a '9,' the weak link was the ending. Not as good as the rest of the book. The Vonnegut books that rate a '10' are 'Sirens of Titan' and 'God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater.' Those are books that after I finished, I went back and read the last chapters again -- that good. 'Cat's Cradle' is great, but not penultimate Vonnegut.

Loads of things start happening, and many different characters take center stage. There is a lot more action, and the plot takes a few unexpected twists.Unlike the first part (The Fellowship of the Ring), this second book actually does have a season finale ending! so make sure you have the Return of the King (3rd part) close by, because you will want to start reading it straight away!

Wings of Morning: The Story of the Last American Bomber Shot Down over Germany in World War II - book cover picture

What a visceral impact Tom Childers' Wings of Morning had on me. Unable to put the book down, I read it in two days. Not only does the author vividly describe the training and every day life of a WWII bomber crew, he also makes you feel like Goodner's family, anxiously awaiting the next letter. Not wanting to give away the results of a frantic search to find out what happened to this crew after being shot down over Germany, let me suggest that you buy the book, curl up in your chair, and read as one hell of a story unfolds. Next to Guy Sajer's "The Forgotten Soldier", you'll have a hard time finding a better account of the war and the men who fought it. As an aside, Professor Childers has a superb course on WWII available through the Teaching Company. And I encourage all of you to seek it out as well.

Book title: Mechanics of Flight

Mechanics of Flight - book cover picture

I am an Aerospace engineer working for the Air Force. While attending the annual AIAA aerospace convention in Reno Nevada, I met a professor from Denmark who raved about the work and research of a professor local to the west, Phillips. This seasoned scholar from Denmark wouldn't miss a session if he found Phillips' name appearing in it. I picked up the "Mechanics of Flight" which was on display for the first time at that conference. Due to the mountain of topics covered (900+ pages) I can't say that I have read every line of that book but the material I studied was impressive. I've never seen such complete derivations right from F=MA. The explanations are meticulous and thorough. I coded a real-time 6-DOF flight simulator for a midsized RCAV using this book as the main reference. I've never seen such a straightforward explanation of Quaternion algebra. If there were a "bible" of flight mechanics and dynamics, I would certainly give this my vote over any other in its class.

Wagon Wheels by Miguel C.

Wagon Wheels (An I Can Read Book) - book cover picture

You should read Wagon Wheels by Barbara Brenner and it is historical fiction. The Muldie boys and their dad were going to the West. They came to Kentucky to make their wood house. In Kentucky, it was a free land. One day the Muldie boys' dad went to find a new place to build a new house. It is a good book because the Muldie boys try to find their dad. It makes me feel very happy to read the book because it was historical fiction. I learned about the Homestead Act and I learned that you can help each other.

Area 51: The Reply - book cover picture

This book doesn't even skip a beat from the the first book by Robert Doherty. The characters are back and this time there is a group of alien ships racing toward earth from Mars. Mike Turcotte once again finds himself in a struggle to save the world. As with the first book this one is loaded with action. Doherty (Bob Mayer in real life) has a lot of experience in the Special Forces and is very talented at describing what soldiers go through during battle sequences. If you like techno sci-fi military action-thrillers, then this is the series for you.

The Magic Circle - book cover picture

I have been reading Katherine Neville's work for more than ten years. My only complaint is that she doesn't come out with her books fast enough. But her work is so carefully crafted, I can certainly see why it takes so long both to write and to read. As a retired literary scholar, I can add that there is no one in the world today that I know of who is even attempting to write works as complex and thought-provoking as hers. The Magic Circle and her earlier works are unique in contemporary fiction. In my opinion, she should be given credit for expanding the horizons of modern fiction.

Gossip Girl #1 : A Novel by Cecily von Ziegesar (Gossip Girl) - book cover picture

For those of you who can't get enough of the OC, you'll love this book. The writing is not extrodinary, but the book is highly entertaining. Once I starded reading, I couldn't stop. The book is basically the east coast version of OC (thought its a little less dramatic). So for those of you who find pleasure in reading about how miserable the lives of the priveledged socalites are, then this series will have your undivded attention.

Time-Saver Standards for Building Types (Time-Saver Standards) - book cover picture

This is a book that sometimes resembles Neufert's, but it has a lot of additional information you might need that will make easier the process of designing various types of buildings. It gives you notions, ideas, proportions, measures and everything you need to know when starting a project. A must-have to any architect (specially with these incredible low-priced used ones. I got mine for 13 bucks and it's absolutely like new).
