A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification: A Comprehesive Primer, Second Edition - book cover picture

If you are aiming at Java Programmer certification (and only in this case) do buy this book. It is an excellent resource to test and amplify your skills. It offers clarity, depth , good code examples and more than enough material to challenge your current understanding and knowledge of Java. Don't expect it to be an easy or pleasant read however. It is a lean and mean certification guide, just the meat, no bells and whistles. It does give new meaning to the word "arid" but in doing so it offers very effective help to get your beloved certificate. The review questions and mock test are also excellent. As a side note, I don't think people should need to be "certified", cheese does.

Painful and intense

Ender's Game (Leather Bound Limited Edition) - book cover picture

I have been reading science fiction since I was 12 years old. I've never encountered a novel like this before. The author, in the preface to the copy I have, wrote that people either loved the book or hated it. I understand why. Ender Wiggins is subjected to an unpleasant life that is not of his choosing, yet, considering the circumstances, there might be no alternative. Somehow, he finds some enjoyment in his life. The first part of the book is almost unbearable in its emotional intensity. There's no gore in the book, but a lot of psychological torture. Not recommended for the squeamish.

Shadow & Claw : The First Half of 'The Book of the New Sun' (New Sun) - book cover picture

While I cannot say this book is the best that I have ever read, it definitely ranks in the top 98% or so. Gene Wolfe delivers a stunning narrative of Earth in the far-distant future. Although Shadow and Claw (the first two books in the series) have a strong fantasy/science fiction edge, they surpass the traditional mold of Tolkein and take the genre to a new contemporary level. This is one of the novels that bridges the gap between Science Fiction and legitimate Lichrachure. If you haven't read it, then read it! If you've already read it, then read it again (especially if you don't agree with me).

This was the first book I read by Sandra Brown and was I hooked. I believe it is one of her very best works and I keep going back and re-reading again and again!!! I've read all of her books and she keeps the bestsellers coming! In French Silk, she brings a beautiful, lady-like lingerie business owner and a detective, a real man's man together yet apart. Wonderful plot twists and a surprising ending. Steamy passion scenes and pulse pounding page turns makes this an awesome read. I couldn't put it down!!!! I read the book in one night!!!!

Confessions of a Shopaholic - book cover picture

This is the second time I am reading this book. It's so good to read because Rebecca doesn't seem to understand that she is putting herself in debt because of her excessive spending. But yet, it's so funny because she can't seems to figure out why she is in the mess she is in. She is no financial whiz but yet writes for a financial magazine. This book in one way, is helpful for any woman who finds herself in debt or is close to it. It shows the reader what not to do and what you need to do. Kinsella does a great job at pointing out the effects of consumerism and what it does to the individual in society without boring the reader.

The Book of Three (Prydain Chronicles) - book cover picture

What can I say? This book was awesome. That doesn't exactly capture my feelings completely, but that's the best I can do for now. It's the only series I've read that I think can compare to Tolkien's writings (But Richard A. Knaak's "Dragonrealm" series is right up there too). As for all the people complaining about it being too much like Tolkien; By golly! I didn't see any rings get destroyed. In fact, I saw no rings at all. Sure, some of the characters were similar (If you stay up late nights thinking about it), but out of the millions (probably more) of books written, aren't the odds pretty high that some characters will be similar? Besides, there's never too much of a great thing. Oh well. Outstanding book. I read the whole series at least once a year. Mr. Alexander: You're awesome! Well, I'm off to have some crunchings and munchings. Farewell! P.S. "A Fflam always makes the best character!"

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

Thank you, for sending my family Harry Potter. For the very first time in his life, my 12 year old couldn't put down a book.It wasn't wrestling that kept him up late last night, but little Harry Potter. He fell asleep reading in the wee hours, and only his light still on alerted me to this new miracle. This morning his first question was "Do I have time to read about Harry before leaving for school?" What a book!

Great Book

Administering NDS, Corporate Edition - book cover picture

Administering NDS- Corporate Edition was a great help for me trying to learn about Novell's new directory services architecture. The book is well organized and easy to read. It provides with step by step instructions on how to do various things using Consoleone as well as NWAdmin32 supported by snapshots so you won't have to sit in front of a console all day. People like me who are keen on network security will find "Managing NDS Security" chapter helpful where authors explained cryptography with Novell PKIS and NICI. At the end of each chapter there are pointers to Web articles - a great plus. Throughout the book authors also tried to provide instructions on how to integrate other platforms (NT and Solaris) under Novell NDS and did a good job at it. I recommend this book to everyone.

Lord of the Flies (Penguin Study Notes) - book cover picture

The Lord of The Flies was a suspensful story about a group of english schoolboys whose plane crashes on to a deserted island and they must struggle to stay alive and leave the island. There were a couple of different struggles. One was whether they follow Ralph's rules and stay civilized to get out of the island or do they follow Jack's orders and become pig hunting savages and eventually die there. The story kept me wondering about what happens next. This was one of the few books I've ever enjoyed. I recommend everyone that reads this to read Golding's Lord of The Flies.
