Pope Joan : A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

I couldn't put this book down, I started reading it at 11 pm and finished it about 4 am. The story is based on the actual legend of Pope Joan, and the details and ending of the story are in agreement with the legend. What Donna Woolfolk-Cross does is to take the legend and flesh it out with a contemporary story. The description is very good, and the love-scenes with Gerold not overstated. You really get the sense of what life was like in the ninth century. Now that I've read it once straight through, I want to read it again to savour the details. The characters are interesting, and the historical aspects obviously well-researched. It is also one of the few historical novels I've read that has romance in it without compromising the character's feminist tendencies.

Foundations of Chinese Medicine: A Comprehensive Text for Acupuncturists and Herbalists - book cover picture

This is truly one of the best texbooks I have every seen that explains acupuncture and chinese medical theory. Very comprehensive and informative. It begins by explaining foundational principles of chinese medical thought such as: yin and yang, the five elements, vital substances, the trasformation of Qi, the function of the different organ systems and patterns, and concludes with very descriptive information on the action and use for most points. This text is used at many acupuncture colleges around the nation. A MUST HAVE for all who have a sincere interest in chinese medicine. Keep an eye open for Giovanni's next work "Diagnosis IN Chinese Medicine".

Dragons, Wizards, and Murder? Oh my...

The Eyes of the Dragon - book cover picture

It all starts in a Kingdom called Delain. The wizard Flagg is King Roland's advisor. Sasha, Roland's wife, gives birth to two sons; Peter, and Thomas. Sasha dies after giving birth to Thomas! So he isn't too popular, since everyone loved Sasha. Flagg has a plan. An eeevil plan. And he has to get that Peter character out of his way to make it work... but I've said too much! Sorry. This is the first Stephen King book I've read, and if all his books are as good as this one, he's got a new fan. I like the way he writes. There's a lot of detail in everything, so you have a little more information to cling on to during the story. But what I liked most, was how he wrote it, so it seemed he was talking to YOU!!! If you like his books, you should read this. If you like dragons, wizards, kings, princes, secret passages, and all that type of thing, this is deffinatly for you!

Born Confused - book cover picture

When I saw this at my school library was ecstatic, jumping in the aisles that there was a book about the Indian American Teenage Life written by an Indian American herself. Although the novel is 400 pages, I was done within two days because I just couldn't put it down. The story is common, about a girl trying to find out who she is, but the way it is told, is what makes this a fantastic novel. It has humor, sadness, love, and if you're an Indian American Teenage girl you can definitely relate to the character. Her parents are a riot and her best friend sort of reminds you of your own. A good Read!

The '60s, the South, and being 14.

The Secret Life of Bees - book cover picture

Wonderful book, just beautifully written and believably told through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl. The story is set in the south, in the 60s, just after the Civil Rights Act was passed. The tale is as much an accounting of the fear-based reaction of southerners to the forces of changing times as it is about the search for acceptance and love, the deep need for parental love: the love that deems you worthy enough to walk this planet. It is about finding the Goddess within, and bravery, and taking risks, and for standing up for what you know in your heart to be true. And, it's about bees and their fascinating lives and social order - how we're the same and how we're different.

Stepmom - book cover picture

Being a stepmom is a real rough job. People automatically assume that you are some kind of home wrecker and end up not giving you a chance when all you want is to love and be loved! I love my husband and everything about him, even his 6yr. old daughter. But it sure is hard not to take things personally. I saw myself and stepdaughter so many times in the book and it made me feel like I wasn't alone. Mom's and stepmoms should definatly read it!!

A promising start to a new epic saga from TOR

Lord of the Isles (Lord of the Isles) - book cover picture

I was very impressed by LORD OF THE ISLES. It upholds TOR's high standards of epic fantasy. In the tradition of Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind, Drake's novel is noteworthy for its interesting characters and attention to detail. I look forward to QUEEN OF DEMONS, the second volume of this epic saga. Drake has the makings of a master fantasist, though most readers probably know of him through his superb military fiction. If you're looking for something good to read until the next Wheel of Time novel is published, give LORD OF THE ISLES a try.

Pope Joan : A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

I started reading Pope Joan in self-defense because all my friends had read it. I ended reading Pope Joan in awe. It is inspirational in that it brings to light the social problems existent in a yesteryear so equated to today's male/female soicio-economic structure. The religious philosophies of bygone days portrayed in the book are adherent of a structure not so unchanged in this 21st century. The story brings to light the steadfast desire of a young woman to become educated; it follows her entrance into the religious life as a disguised contemporary of the ruling male populous of the church. Joan accomplishes what no other woman ever has - but who is to say that it cannot happen again? Excellent reading. I now discuss this book with my friends. Read it and do the same.

Perfect book for a vacation or lazy weekend

Book title: Afterburn
Rating: 5/5

Afterburn - book cover picture

In a last minute attempt to find a perfect book for vacation, I picked up "Afterburn." But moments after I purchased it, I had second thoughts. I figured it would just be another book in the Grisham, et al. genre. Boy, was I wrong. The twists and turns were completely upredictable. And the characters were remarkably well drawn. This is a perfect vacation read and worthy of excellent word of mouth.

The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL - book cover picture

The thing that blew me away about this book is how well written it is. Henderson has a way of explaining the most difficult concepts is prose that is nitpickingly detailed, yet friendly and readable. The explanation and examples of tsql functions that do statististical calculations was marvelous. Absolutely excellent. The same is true of the rest of the book. It's definitely head and shoulders about the other tsql books out there, especially the one I got last week by Moreau and co. which I am considering returning.
