First, Kirkus Reviews ought to go back to the beginnings of western liberalism and come forward to realise where we are today and to get a true perspective on Davidson's and Rees-Mogg's views. This book is bound to irk the nationalists, socialists, marxists, et. al. i.e. neoredistributionists of all persuasions as many of the reviews here demonstate. Further, if your unfamiliar with the writings of the classical-liberal authors, like John Locke, you could have difficulty understanding the premises upon which many of the author's arguments are based, but read it anyway. This is a good place to begin your journey.

Another Winner For Preston and Child!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
The Cabinet Of Curiosities is the best book by these authors since Relic and Reliquary -- and that's high praise since all of Preston's and Child's books have been very good. If you're looking for a top notch "Summer Read," you'll have a tough time finding a more exciting and entertaining book than this one. Keep in mind, The Cabinet Of Curiousities is not great literature but it is well-written and is a story that will hold your attention from the first to last page. Without going into the plot details, which has been done in many of the previous reviews, this books is very fast-paced, has captivating characters (some of whom you'll recognize if you've read Relic, Reliquary and Thunderhead by these authors), contains lots of interesting historical and science information, and is filled with suspense and surprises. All in all, The Cabinet Of Curiousities is well-worth your time and money. Enjoy! You're in for a fun reading experience.

A terrific ride through the desert
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Monkey Wrench Gang is something that readers of Ed Abbey have come to expect: crude behavior combined with a social message. This book is often criticized for being "too different" from Desert Solitaire because of the destructive message that it sends. I think Abbey's intention was to create a unique, adventurous book that would draw SOME kind of reaction, positive or negative. As a nature writer, his position is obviously going to that of contempt and loathing for government. But I think that his message was to get readers thinking about what could or should be done about the preservation of the environment. I will definitely read this book again sometime down the road. Ultimately, if you like adventure and colorful characters, buy this book. You won't be disappointed!

The Power of the Eye
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Ironically, one of most potent and multifaceted visual metaphors is the eye itself. In this book, Francis Huxley blends science, art, mythology, and religion to demonstrate the layers of meaning in the image of the eye. The text is interspersed with drawing, diagrams, and color plates throughout, so the entire book is quite visually engaging. Huxley explores the eye as a symbol of the Sacred, as a praeternatural attribute of monsters, as a weapon (e.g. "the evil eye"), and as an emblem of what is highest in human nature. The images in the book draw from ancient and modern sources worldwide. This is a wonderful and thought-provoking book about this ubiquitous symbol.

The best abstract linear algebra book out there
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
This book is the best if you are looking for an abstract approach to linear algebra. It provides elegant proofs to theorems that usually seem long-winded and awkward (like the cauchy-schwarz inequality). Sometimes in your lectures you may get to the point thinking "can't this be proven more elegant?" and you simply open halmos and it is there. Note that this book does not deal alot with matrices, everything of the theory is there, but you might miss illustrations and applications. In this case I recommend to back it up with Gilbert Strangs Linear Algebra and its Applications, which has an intuitive, matrice-oriented approach.Considering the price and the wide range of topics often left out in other books (like Nilpotence, Jordanform, Spectral Theorem,...) this simply is the one book you should buy and keep for reference.

The Paradox of the Deep South
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The beauty of Carson McCullers' first novel is it honestly depicts the deep south of her time. It shows both the romantic aspects and the ugliness (racism, in particular), while telling the stories of a group of memorable characters, centered around a gentle deaf-mute at a boardinghouse. McCullers finds a middle-ground, giving us the flavor of this small southern town, both sweet and sour. This book is one of my favorites of all time.

complex, thought-provoking, funny
Rating: 5/5

This perhaps one of the greatest books I have ever read. What I find so fascinating and compelling about Rusdhie's writing is his ability to address mutliple cultural, social and political themes within a single work. His witty and darkly satirical writing style also lend tremendous humour to this work. Mr. Rushdie explores everything from the legacy of colonialism and neo-colonialism, questions the basis of Western notions of good and evil, challenges religious extremism and ponders the complexity of human relationships. Certainly, this isn't an easy book. However, I feel that the issues that Mr. Rushdie seeks to address are not simple ones.

One of the best
Rating: 5/5

I read this book when I was in undergraduate school and once again when I had great trouble with a production line. While rather empirical, the story is very useful, and can be put directly into use. In many points of the book, I felt as I were sitting on Rogo's chair and trying to solve his problems. Eliyahu Goldratt introduces us to the Theory of Constraints, which must be understood by anyone who plans to act in any managerial role.

You don't have to hate grammar!
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
This little book is easy to read, and easier to understand. It may be lacking for those who seek a definitive and comprehensive guide to grammar, but it manages to cover the basics well. This book is definitely for those who have difficulty discerning when to use "who" and "whom." Without exhausting the rules and their exceptions, O'Conner manages to provide simple explanations of some of the more complex "problems" we frequently encounter. Next time you are confronted with the plural for "octopus," you will know whether to use octopuses, octopodes or octopi. With tasteful humor, O'Conner exposes many grammatical fallacies that have been taught in shools for decades. She exposes the quintessential truth about English: It is a living language, and as such it is bound to change.
