The Changeover: A Supernatural Romance (Point) - book cover picture

The Changeover has been my all time favourite book since I read it several years ago. Why? Let's see : it's because it has unusual but believeable chracters:the enigmatic, fascinating and slightly dangerous Sorenson is quite unlike the normal guy you read about in an ordinary teenage romance. Laura is his equal and even when she is drawn to him she can match his advances point for point. The story itself does not focus solely on the relationship between them but it's interwoven into the plot like a golden thread in a tapestry enhancing its overall beauty. It's a fantasy set in modern day times and is written so realistically that you almost find it hard to believe that it hasn't or will eventually happen. You expect to meet a Laura Chant somewhere and you can't quite shake the fear or the hope that one day you may come across a Sorenson Carlisle in a deserted lane, a dark alley or in the desk next to you in school.

The Bernini Bust - book cover picture

Jonathan Argyll is almost an anti-hero. He's an art broker who isn't very good at his job, and a lover who suffers from a stuttering inability to express himself. Nevertheless, he's sold an overpriced Titian to an L.A. museum and Argyll must travel from France to the US to oversee his sale. But L.A. is filled with bad guys--sneaky thieves, tacky museums, and thugs of all descriptions. The art world is turned upside down by murders which expose the darker side of human greed: tax evasion, fakery, and adultery. Jonathan's friend Flavia, a member of the Italian art fraud squad, joins him in L.A. to help unravel the increasingly twisted skein. Together they solve the crimes, and return to Italy as friends and lovers for the final, surprising scene of this delightful novel.Enjoy the setting, the characters, and the literate humor of a wonderful mystery story. I highly recommend it.

Sunrise with Seamonsters - book cover picture

Even without taking my copy of this down from the shelf, a mental vision of the cover conjures up brief mnemonic wisps of mental perfume: sailing on Cape Cod, his memories of Africa, the tale of the unironed shirt and the burrowing mites, the essay on extended family that has always made me wistful for the experience or at least envious to have a doctor and lawyer available for free consultations. Influential stuff from a more or less acerbic personality.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) - book cover picture

If you haven't read the book yet, don't read my review, because I'm going to include spoilers.
I loved this book, but it was definitely the darkest one yet. Harry is evidently not allowed to care for and depend on anyone, or they die. First his parents, then Sirius, now Dumbledore.
And Snape, who I was just beginning to feel sorry for, after reading Book five, should be boiled in undiluted bubotuber pus. I have to say that I didn't see it comming, no matter how obvious it was.
If you haven't read this book, you're missing out, but if you're planning on reading it, look out for the heartache.

HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS: Visual QuickStart Guide, Fifth Edition - book cover picture

I have become a fan of the Visual Quick Start Series ever since I went through this book. If you are new to HTML then you should definitely buy this book. HTML is a language which is intuntive and best taught by giving plenty of examples and avoiding too much theory. Elizabeth Castro accomplishes this and I found this book so interesting and to the point that I finished it in just two sittings. It will serve as a quick and easy reference once you are done reading it.

One of the best books I've read this year.

The Passions of Emma - book cover picture

Not only is "The Passions of Emma" one of the best books I've read in a long, long time, it's probably one of the most well-written ones too. After reading Meagan McKinney's "Lions and Lace" (one of my favorites) I became aware of the plight that the Irish faced when they came to America. This book expanded on that knowledge. Aside from that, this story of friendship and love was wonderful. My only complaint is that I would have liked more written about the hero and heroine. But, I don't want to spoil any part of the book for anyone, so I will just say this: Don't pass this one up, it will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

You've got to be kidding me

Running with Scissors - book cover picture

This book is disgustingly funny. It a memoir, so I take that most (or all) of it is true. But in all seriousness, if people like Dr Finch and his family exist, I really have no words at all.
I think the book should come with a warning that its not for the faint of heart. Or at least something like 'don't read it while eating lunch.' Some parts are truly horrific and honestly, disturbing.
But all in all the book achieves what it set out to achieve. It makes the reader laugh and cry, sadly all at the expense of a little boy from a broken home.

a crazy story, makes you wonder

Book title: The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon

The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon - book cover picture

What a fantastic book! It grabbed me from the first sentence and its grip only tightened. During the last 50 pages I was crying my eyes continually, at times laughing, sometimes reeling and gasping from the brutality and sadness, but above all the deep truth of the story. I can't remember when I cried so much while reading a novel! As far as I know, this novel is sui generis and quite unique. It is as though you looked right into the soul of the man "Shed." One thing I must denigrate is the slaughterhouse scene. It seemed a little too gratuitiously yucky for effect, to make a point. That part was the toughest to get through and it reminded me of the horrifyingly gray world of "Gorgemghast." But overall, what a book! Phew! I feel just like I took a vacation in Idaho of the 1880s.
