Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach You and Medication Can't Give You - book cover picture

I recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from depression. It's a quick read and it examines depression directly and honestly. The diction is lively and descriptive, not boring and clinical. It doesn't provide any quick fixes or easy answers, although I'm certain that anyone who suffers from clinical depression already knows that there are no easy answers or quick cures. Best of all, the book is never patronizing; the author writes from the viewpoint not only as a psychoanalyst but also as a patient himself.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex - book cover picture

Very good and apparently well researched account of the tragedy of the Whaleship Essex which was stove in and sunk by a whale, a rare event. Begins with a good background of the old whaling industry in New England, particularly Nantucket, and follows with the tragic voyage of the Essex. Detailed description of the ordeal and horrors endured by the 20 men who were in 3 small boats on the open ocean for over 90 days. Good descriptions of the Captain, First Mate, and others, and well illustrated with drawings and photographs. Once started, I found the book hard to put down.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay - book cover picture

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is a wonderful snapshot of America immediately preceding WWII. For anyone who is old enough to have loved comic books, known American culture pre MTV and media immersion, or who just loves recent American History, AAKC is a wonderful book. The characters are interesting, and the command of facts the author brings to his subject superb. It's also one that can be read while commuting or travelling because the inner stories are episodic. Enjoy!

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

To make a long story short: this is a great book, one of the best ever written. I read this book last year in 8th grade and it kept me interested until the very last page. The author, J.D. Salinger really does a great job creating sometimes sad and dramatic moments while narrating the story in a very informal way, like he's your friend. This helps the reader to see everything through Holden's (the main character) eyes even more. You become immersed in the story. Although Holden doesn't appear to be very smart, I think he is a genius. If you take a closer look at what he says you can really get a lot out of this book. I promise you won't want to put this book down.

Derailed - book cover picture

Seriously, if your budget only allows you to buy a couple of books a year, make sure this one is at the top of your list. This book was impossible to put down!! I have to get ready for a job interview this morning, but I had to finish this book first. I loved the premise: Charles Schine is a middle-aged man going through a bit of a mid-life crisis. His daughter is sick, his wife is distant and unhappy, he's having problems at work, but everything happens for a reason and he ends up taking a later train into work one day. That's when he meets the sinfully beautiful Lucinda....and Everything changes. I hate cliche's, but it's true.....this book grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go. I highly recommend this book, however, make sure you have nothing really important that has to get done right away because you won't want to put this book down!

Real Boys : Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood - book cover picture

I'm so grateful I found this book while my son is still just a toddler. I find myself asking, "Would I be doing this if he were a girl?" all the time now. This book has given me "permission" to raise my son in the way I've thought was best. I am now fully aware of the issues we will face as he grows. Issues I was only vaugely aware of before.I am saddened by the damage that has been done to our sons. I am hopeful that we will be able to change, to start raising whole persons.

Animal Farm : A Fairy Story (Classic, 20th-Century, Audio) - book cover picture

At the time of Animal Farm's, and 1984's first publish, certain European powers were on the rise. George Orwell seems to have been the only one ready enough and intelligent one to take on Hitler and Stalin. While others hid in their cupboards in fear of an air raid. Orwell spent longs hours at his desk putting on the finishing touches to his masterpieces. Even if Hitler had taken over the world (thank God he didn't), Orwell would have been there making the brainwashed realize the evil and wrong doing behind the Nazi beliefs. In my personal opinion, Orwell affected World War II as much as Eisenhower and Churchill did. Only he made people, years later, remember just how important freedom, life, liberty, and a caring government really are.
