The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 2) - book cover picture

The Reptile Room is the second book filled with the Bauedlaire childre's misfortune. When the orphans go to live with their Uncle Monty everything seems to be fine untill a new assintant, Stefano who is realy a man they hoped never to see again makes a plan to get their fortune. The children know who Stefano is but no one thinks the are right. This story is funny, educational and sad. I loved how Mr. Snicket as in the first book gave a definition for all of the words that were big or techinal. This was a great book I found myself reading it over and over again! READ THIS BOOK!!

The Seven Silly Eaters - book cover picture

We've had this book ever since publication and I've been waiting to see if we tire of it. It is simply superlative and my only puzzlement is why it wasn't a Caldecott winner. The text is inspired and the illustrations, which provide so very much to recognize and talk about, are very probably the best illustrations I have ever seen in a childrens' book--or any other. They are extraordinarily witty--Mrs. Peters is taller than her husband and loves the cello, MaryLou is a dramatist who always has a grievance, Peter at potty is glimpsed through an open door while a sibling threatens a snowball fight. My grandchildren love it and I've given a number as gifts. People are enthralled!

The end of the political correctness as we know it

Book title: Evolution of Human Sexuality

Evolution of Human Sexuality - book cover picture

This book has more than 20 years, and, despite the fact that it provide a simple answer, beautiful and falsable in scientific terms, for the differences in the male and female sexuality, it has not entered in the mainstream of the human sciences as an accepted hypothesis in the arsenal of scientific theories. Sociobiology, and now the Evolutionary Psychology are sciences which cope with a strong resistance to be accepted by the scientific community. The fact is that both disciplines have more support by common people who are dissatisfied with the political correct answers to their most deep questions rather than with the professional Scientifics in sociology, psychology, anthropology and other human sciences.

The reason for this resistance is .. Politics. It's time to return to Reason and to reject the Inquisition of the political correctness in science, no matter what the facts are. Steven Pinker denounces that in "he Blank Slate"

Perfume : Complete and Unabridged - book cover picture

I first picked up this book in french a few years ago, and have bought the english version and given out as gifts ever since. It pretty much captures the essence of what the author describes but I think the french version is more romantic because it fits the cheap "roman policier" genre and yet accomplishes the "philosophique" aspect. And after reading it, you've got to run out and buy the eau de cologne you used when you were a teenager, come home and douse yourself with it and all those sweet memories will come back to haunt you...

Obviously many people have been moved by this book, as witnessed by the number of online reviews. I have no scientific background at all, and I agree with another reviewer who said "everyone should read this book." I have returned to this book many times since someone gave it to me 7 years ago. In good or times or bad, this book has been an inspiration to me. How to be yourself against the flood of conformity, how to maintain standards, how to remain human. Unforgetable.

Making a Good Script Great - book cover picture

Having taught many classes on feature film development, there are very few books I recommend. Dr. Seger's book "Making a Good Script Great" rates up there with "The Art of Dramatic Writing" and Aristotle's "Poetics" as a book all screenwriters should read. What makes her tome stand out, is that it's not about the first draft, but rather about the rewrite process, a journey most writers shy away from...but with her sure fire map, this book just may make it easier for them. This book compliments the many books already written on screenwriting and would be a welcome addition to any filmmaker'slibrary. I recommend it as one of the 10 books a filmmaker should have on their bookshelf.

The Testament (John Grishham) - book cover picture

When The Testament was delivered to my doorstep, I ripped open the package and started thumbing through the first few pages.Incredibly, I was hooked from then on. The description and the way the book is written is very good. Although I can't say that The Testament is John Grisham's best book (and I have read most of his books), it certainly is one of the best. The Testament might seem slightly exagerrated to some, but the storyline itself saves the book.I could hardly put down the book from the day I started reading it.And if I gave David Baldacci's The Simple Truth 4 stars, this book definitely deserves twice that, out of 5.Great effort, and I'll be looking forward to reading The Brethren.

I finally grokked it!

Stranger in a Strange Land - book cover picture

Years ago (about 5) I tried to read Stranger. I found it boring and unexciting. Since then, I have matured. Heinlein is a genius and he seems to look at societal values with X-RAY vision! I decided to read "Friday", "Cat who walks through walls", "I will fear no evil" and other Heinlein books to prepare myself for Stranger. It worked, I got past the "boring" stuff and saw into it. I have grokked Stranger and it's a pleasure. As for those who didn't enjoy this book, lighten up, open your mind a little, stop and smell the flowers, enjoy the small things that life has to offer. STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND is FICTION, it is not a political agenda, cult church or philisophical powerhouse (although it should be). Take the blinders off, enjoy Heinlein, he tells it like it is (or should be thats up to you the reader to decide, lol). Overall, I enjoyed the book quite a bit, an easy task with an open mind.

Joyful, exuberant, hilarious!

Book title: The Ground Beneath Her Feet : A Novel

The Ground Beneath Her Feet : A Novel - book cover picture

Rushdie's first "American" novel is not as narratively tight as his other-best Midnight's Chldren, nor does it have the same level of social/political commentary of Shame or Satanic Verses, but what he loses in these areas he gains tenfold in pure, joyous readability, in a lovely Nabokovian word-play and an often hilarious spontenaity of language. Reading the novel is like sitting down before an eclectic potluck dinner prepared by the best of chefs. Ironically, his first major work since the fatwa is also his most optimistic and I found myself grinning throughout, as well as breathlessly rereading some of the most finely-crafted paragraphs in modern literature. A pleasure, pure and simple.
