From the Corner of His Eye - book cover picture

Although I'm still reading this book (a few more pages to go), I just had to write a review on how impressive and intelligent the writing is. I'm a huge fan of Dean Koontz and have read many of his books already (and eventually plan to read them all), but it didn't really hit me how talented a writer he is until I read this book. The book is long, but it never feels like it. It is such an enjoyable book and just adds to my belief that Koontz is one of the greatest writers ever. Ignore the negative reviews and give it a chance. Koontz fans (and newcomers) will definitely love this book and the author.

Cartoon Guide to Physics - book cover picture

Larry Gonick is amazing. I've read a number of his "cartoon guides" and this one didn't let me down. I happened to read it while taking a highschool physics class. It was great--I kept thinking "Oh! *Now* I get it!" I think that this is an excellent supplement to any "official" textbook or class: the textbook will give you the math problems, etc., and the Cartoon Guide to Physics will allow you to understand the concepts behind them.

The Blair Witch Project: A Dossier - book cover picture

Great book. This is an answer to one of the reviewers questions. Mike is standing in the corner staring at the wall because the old lady Mary Brown said that the blair witch makes one person stand in the corner while she kills the others. ALSO, TO EVERYONE OUT THERE, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT IS NOT A TRUE STORY! THE "DOCUMENTARY" WAS MADE JUST TO ADVERTISE THE MOVIE. IT WAS ALL MADE UP, ITS JUST A MOVIE. READ NEWSWEEK FROM A FEW WEEKS AGO AND YOU WILL SEE THE 3 ACTORS ON THE FRONT.

An outstanding page-turner and great addition to the field

Darkness, Take My Hand - book cover picture

I read the first four Dennis Lehane books this summer (in about 3 weeks!) and have really enjoyed them. I've read all the great private-eye series--Hammet, Chandler, Ross MacDonald, Robert B. Parker--and I think Lehane is really a fresh talent. His characters are occasionally reminiscent of Spenser and company, but not so much that it's distracting. What really distinguishes Lehane, in my view, is his outstanding plots. All the books I've read are very solid mysteries and his detectives, Patrick and Angie, get very involved in solving the mystery, rather than just following an investigation. I chose this one to review because it's an excellent jumping-on point for new readers. It is a truly nerve-tingling, gripping read that manages to make the whole serial-killer milieu fresh. This is the work of a very talented writer who is undoubtedly going to rank with the giants of the PI field.

Exploring the Titanic: Scott Foresman Reading Classroom Library (Time Quest Book) - book cover picture

I am in love with the great liner that took her first and last voyage over 86 years ago. Titanic's 45,000 ton body was built in Belfast, Ireland, and now rests two miles under the sea! For many, many decades the question was put, over and over again- where exactly is the great liner in the sea?The question (along with many other questions) were answered when Robert D. Ballard discovered the long lost ship. Ballard's book, "Exploring the Titanic" takes you 12,460 feet under water to Titanic herself. "Exploring Titanic" has wonderful pictures, graphics, diagrams and intense information. Even though it is written for about the age of 8, adults might find interest in the book as well. I would have given it a 10, but graphics are not as clear as they could be, and is written quite simply.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason - book cover picture

I bought the audio version of this book as soon as I finished the first one "Bridget Jones's Diary". It is amazing how Helen Fielding can make the sequel better than the first one (which was great already). Tracie Bennett, again, is a very good narrator. This time someone is trying to destroy her relationship with Mark. Moreover, Bridget is accidently involved in a serious legal trouble. You will love the way she look at her life in the good side in every situations. Although the ending was predictable as usual, the story still kept me laughing all the time.At the end, You (and Bridget)will know (and love) Mark much more.

The Lais of Marie de France (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

Marie was a gifted writer, navigating the "lais" genre with skill, surprising wit, and compassion for her characters. It's amazing how much she can say in 800 odd lines. One can read these stories as beautifully written bedside table stories, but they are also profound, candid observations on the nature of love, men, women, jealousy and the process of redemption. Marie spends most of her words on plot description, but they are so well chosen that one finds after reading a few that anything she says is deeply connected to the core message of the lais. The stories are not about distant, courtly love; their characters are men and women who requite their love, sometimes suffering consequences, always changing. Marie is unparralleled among Midieval female writers. She reads like Jane Austen.

A Different Historical Perspective

The Little Ice Age: How Climate Made History, 1300-1850 - book cover picture

The Little Ice Age is an examination of the effects of the five hundred year long period from 1300 to 1800, when Europe suffered through a period of intense and unstable weather. Fagan does not blame every historical incident on the NAO, or North Atlantic Oscillation, but does make a good case that fluctuations in the NAO have intensified the effects of such disparate incidents as the Black Death epidemic, the Irish potato famine, the Great Fire of London, and many other events. Fagan also does a good job of pointing out that we are presently living in an apparent warm spell, intensified by the greenhouse effect, and helps us recognize the potential for sudden, perhaps catastrophic change in our weather systems. I'm amazed by the amount of research Fagan did in tracking the rise and fall of glaciers and the paths of five hundred year old storms. A great read which will help you recognize the delicate balance of our global weather systems.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) - book cover picture

Harry Potter is a book that people see on the shelf and they buy it for their kids. I guarantee that it is appropriate for people of all ages and backgrounds. The book is fiction and takes place in the imaginary world of Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a twelve year old boy who is going to school to become a sorcerer. The school he attends is Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. The evil character of the story is Sirius Black. He had been convicted of killing thirteen people with one curse. Sirius had escaped from prison and had only one thing on his mind, to kill Harry Potter. Harry is protected by close friends, Hermoine, Ron and Neville. His good friends attend classes with him and have interesting things happen to them throughout the book. The book is very interesting and holds the reader's attention. When you start the book, you don't want to put it down. The book is easy reading and very entertaining. I would reccommend it to people of all ages.
