Local People: The Struggle for Civil Rights in Mississippi (Blacks in the New World) - book cover picture

Local People is a well-written, deeply-researched, and brilliantly conceived book. It takes the reader far beyond the civil rights celebrities and the TV history that is all too familiar, and roots the movement among the local folk of the black South. It also sees deeply into the politics of black liberation in those decisive years, giving us rich insights and telling anecdotes. Still more impressive, Local People manages to be a first-rate work of scholarship and a great read. If you have a history buff in the family or someone who likes American politics, this makes a great gift. My father couldn't put it down.

A riveting tale of the modern political landscape

All Too Human: A Political Education - book cover picture

This is a riveting tale of a man who was close to President Clinton (some have measured a distance of four inches, though there is some convincing, but unconfirmed evidence that the real distance was two inches) that it took all the effort Stephanopoulos could muster to keep quiet those gurgling sounds you get in your belly when your hungry. Imagine if THAT were picked up on national television. I found the story about the time Yeltsin and Clinton met and Yeltsin mistook Clinton for a jug of whiskey. I don't know how the translators kept a straight face when Yeltsin told Clinton he wanted to drink the President straight up! What George doesn't discuss, however, is what most Americans are eager to hear about the first couple: who does their laundary? A good read, bring it to beach this summer.

Berlioz the Bear - book cover picture

This is another fun book that my toddlers love to read ~~ ok, have mom read to them. This one is fun to read ~~ with a band of traveling bears. They are getting ready to play at a ball in a nearby town when their wagon hits a hole in the ground and a wheel gets stuck ~~ then their donkey decides to sit. A bunch of animals offer to help but none of them were strong enough to get the wagon of bears out of the hole. Till an angry bumblebee flies out of one of the instruments and stings the donkey into action. How clever is that! If my toddlers were older, I know they would laugh with glee. I did! This is another book to add to your collection of Jan Brett's books ~~ she's a guarantee when it comes to entertaining children and their parents with beautifully illustrated books and wonderful storylines. 2-4-04

great book for a great language

Book title: Programming in F
Rating: 5/5

Programming in F - book cover picture

F is Imagine1 Inc.'s new language (or rather a dialect), consisting of the actual 90 / 95 parts of Fortran 90 / 95, available for Windows / Macintosh / Unix / Linux. In other words, it doesn't have the junk (go to, strange If's) of old Fortran 66 / 77 but includes pointers and structures a la C. The F language is easier to use than C (and Java), and deserves to be the Turbo Pascal of the 2000's for statisticians / behavioral scientists / engineers / scientists, in terms of it being a great, general language (although it could do with graphics / interface / commercial numeric libraries). This book is not the sort of thing that can be read in an afternoon, but it is both very comprehensive and very clear, if you're willing to keep at it. Recommended!

Dirk Pitt's Best, Most Interesting Adventure

Book title: Night Probe!

Night Probe! - book cover picture

"Night Probe!" reads like a great movie would, and in all honesty, it is Clive Cussler's best. Dirk Pitt, who raised the Titanic, has quite an adventure in "Night Probe!" The United States is economically going down the tubes, and there is just one hope: A secret treaty with Great Britain, 75 years old, and all but forgotten. The President sends Pitt to find the treaty, while Great Britain sends their most cunning MI6 agent. This leads to the climax of "Night Probe!" with the future of North America hanging in the balance.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

I am a college professor, but at heart I am a child and this book transported me to a magical world! Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is more than just a children's novel. It reads like a classic and avoids the cliches and predictability of many children's books. I love children's literature but often feel turned off by how sexist and un-creative some of the stories can be. This book is a jewel! Once you read it, you will be hooked.

A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver - book cover picture

It's turning into a year of Elaine Konigsburg for me. After reading her newest (The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place), I decided that I missed her books a lot and began to sprinkle them in with my regular consumption of adult reading. I remember tackling this one as a kid and instantly falling in love with all things Eleanor or Aquitaine. And I'm glad I remember enjoying it when I was young, because if I had just picked this one up, I would have been tempted to say something like "This is great, but will kids get it?" The answer, obviously, is to never underestimate a young reader. And always trust a brilliant writer like Elaine Konigsburg.

A towering achievement

Book title: Rising From The Plains
Rating: 5/5

Rising From The Plains - book cover picture

In stirring prose McPhee turns the imperceptible pace of geological change exposed in High Plains road cuts into sublime and awesome cataclysms. He incorporates the struggle to survive and prosper of a pioneering ranch family, from whom came an outstanding geologist, John Love. He deciphers the complex story lying behind modern Wyoming, including the soaring Teton Range, evocative Wind River, and Yellowstone. Far more than a guide (with it's helpful time charts and map), McPhee's sensitive writing makes you feel the prodigious forces of the landscape lurking underfoot--almost as unsettling as experiencing an earthquake yourself. A fun complement to this book is the Wyoming oil geologist mystery Tensleep by Sarah Andrews, or Margaret Coel's Arapaho mystery series.

Hunger (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) - book cover picture

This is a book that hits most of its readers like a sledgehammer! The days, hours and minutes of the nameless first person are so vivid and bring out every thinkable sensation in the reader. It makes you speechless - only Knut Hamsun himself could put words to describe "Hunger", the very beginning of his breakthrough - the man who taught the best writers of the 20th century how to write. To every single person who has not read "Hunger": This, if anything, is a MUST READ!
