There's no Bond like an old Bond!

Thunderball (James Bond Novels) - book cover picture

After reading some of the recent works of Raymond Benson, I thought it might be fun to go back and read one of the classic 007 novels. I had never read THUNDERBALL before, but I thoroughly enjoyed both movie versions; especially "Never Say Never Again".Thunderball is one of Fleming's best! The scuba diving battle beneath the Caribbean between Bond and Largo is epic, but the most enduring feature of the novel is it marks the first appearance of the criminal organization SPECTRE, and it's diabolical leader, Ernst Stavro Blofeld!Did Ian Fleming have any idea how much impact this character would have on the rest literary world when he created him? Blofeld started out as just an arch rival for James Bond, but his character became the role model for all evil genius villains with megalomanical dreams of world domination!Thunderball is a must-read for all 007 fans.

An excellent introduction to a complex subject

Book title: Philosophy of Natural Science

Philosophy of Natural Science - book cover picture

Hempel's little book _Philosophy of Natural Science_ is a concise, lucid introduction to a complex subject. In just over a hundred pages, he discusses a wide range of problems in the philosophy of science, with an emphasis on epistemological issues. Like other books in the "Foundations of Philosophy" series (and like other good philosophy texts in general), the book not only discusses the positions of other philosophers, it also makes a case for the author's own point of view. Chapter 5, where he lays out his deductive-nomological model of scientific explanation, is worth the cover price alone. Hempel is a clear writer, and he illustrates his points with many examples from the history of science. These are both illuminating and interesting in their own right. This book is a great place to start to learn about the history and philosophy of science.

The Coffee Trader : A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

David Liss has done it again. The warning I'll give regarding his latest book is: be careful -- you might find yourself drinking a LOT of coffee. Mr. Liss creates such marvelous imagery as he describes someone's first cup of coffee --ever, you'll find yourself craving a cup of your own. The genre is, once again, the 17th Century with all its beauty and simplicity. Mr. Liss' ability to capture life in Amsterdam and the machinations of the emerging commodities market is just splendid. So sit down pour yourself a thick cup of French Roast and enjoy!

Powerful prose, not easily forgotten.

The Tooth Fairy - book cover picture

Grotesque, beautiful, repulsive, compelling, hilarious, tragic, magical and very very erotic! Rarely have I read a book that provokes so many conflicting emotions. The angst of growing pains and awakening sexuality is very skillfully crafted and will, no doubt, strike a chord of recognition with many readers. The enigmatic character of the Tooth Fairy will haunt you long after the final page. A minor masterpiece.

Mind Candy

Book title: The First Horseman
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The First Horseman - book cover picture

This is not a book that is part of the genres I generally favor. Therefore, I have little else to compare it to, and read this one based on its own merit.

I found this book highly suspenseful, well paced and concise, full of fascinating scientific ideas and therefore, even somewhat educational (although I would have to scrutinize the science from second sources before taking it too seriously). Definitely worth losing some sleep while compelled by the plot to read this one in one sitting.

While the book covers a lot of ground (environmentalism, foreign policy, bioterror threat domestic and third world, ecoterror, cults, science, responsible journalism...) it neither delves into substantive social observation nor devotes any more space to character development than necessary--this one's 100% plot driven. Expect to be entertained and (thankfully) not lectured!

Confessions of a Shopaholic - book cover picture

This is a wonderfully sumputous witty novel. I could't put it down and was sad when I'd finished the series. The only complaint I have is that I often found Becky (the main character) intensly annoying because of her insane shopping and rufusal the acknowledge here mounting credit card bills. Thinking they would just pay themselves. But this does not diminish the fact that this is a wonderful book for everyone. Full Marks!!!!

Inspiring and truly worthwhile

The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream - book cover picture

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this author? He is truly a man of wisdom and this is evident to us as we read through his writtings. When I first read the alchemist there was such a deep feeling of inspiration, and understanding within me. The part I enjoyed most about the book is that it gave us a different view of God. This book allows us to view God as having
a sense of humor! I loved the book and can recommend it to those seeking to find a deeper meaning to life, themselves and God. I have also read the pilgrimage and By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, more of Coelho's great and deep writtings.

Thrilling, Greatly Enjoyed

Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace - book cover picture

This book was a really great book. This was the first STAR WARS book I have ever read, even though I am a big STAR WARS fan, and it gat me hooked on all the STAR WARS novels, but at first I felt obligated to read the book because it was written by my favorite author, Terry Brooks. I really liked the parts in the book with the discription of the histoy of the Sith, and of Anakin helping the Tusken Raider, parts not in the movie that I thought should have been. Overall, the whole book was great, I have no negative comments about, it was thrilling and action filled, and it kept my interest the whole way through, I didn't want to put it down. This is a must read for any true STAR WARS fan.

Mick Harte Was Here - book cover picture

I read this book in the 3rd grade. It tells about how Mick Harte was killed in a car accident, and how his family got on without him. It is an excellent book, it made me cry. It teaches kids especially to wear their helmet while riding a bike (Mick wasn't wearing his helmet and he got killed by a car) I also recommend this to any child who has lost a family member in an accident. It's a great book.

Memoirs of a Geisha - book cover picture

Though I wasn't much of a reader before, I read this book in just under two weeks. I did the thing I have always done in the past in english class. How many pages are in this chapter? How long will it take me to read this section? But after only a few pages, I could not take my hands off hte book. It captivated me from beginning to end, and gave me a new appreciation for every aspect of Japanese culture. Soon, you don't even care what page you're on, or what time it is back in the real world. At times, I read until 3am. And I never have before. The poetry and beauty of the book made me sympathize wiht the characters, hate the characters, and fall in love with the characters. This book made fish, dresses, and make up see, more than amazing. I could smell the fish in the villages, and feel the cake of the make up on my face. I more than loved this book, I felt this book. And I not only read it fast, it has once again made me a reader. Thank you Arthur Golden!!!
