The next step in programming

Design Patterns - book cover picture

There are two types of programmers in the world--those that hack their way through problems and those that create works of beauty. Buying "How To" books and language references will teach you how to write the syntax to solve the problem; this book will take you to the next step of actually crafting a solution. It's not for beginners, though. You should be a seasoned hack before attempting this material. Even with 12 years experience, I'm still struggling with some concepts. C++ and/or Smalltalk experience is a plus since they are used for the examples. If you're sick of being 'just a programmer', buy it. You won't be sorry.

Whirligig (Laurel Leaf Books) - book cover picture

Whirligig is one of the best books I've read! In the beginning of the book, there is this new kid there (his name is Brent). One night he went with his new friend to a party (he had only been there for a few days). When he got there he saw this girl he liked. Brent went up to her and started to talk to her; she got very annoyed by him. So she yelled at him for him to leave her alone! Before Brent started to talk to her he got a little drunk. Then he left the party and got to his car and drove away. On the way home he got in a car accident and killed someone named Lea. All he wanted to do is get to know her. Lea's mom gave him the punnishment to go to California, Maine, Florida, and Washigton to build whirligigs. If you want to find out what whirligigs are and how he survives by himself traveling over the United States read this book.

The Phantom of the Opera (Bullseye Chillers) - book cover picture

This, in my opinion is the most incredibly beautiful books ever. Not only is it an interesting story, but the descriptions of love are so wonderful, and yet heart-wrenching that you almost have to cry for poor Erik. When Erik told the Persian about his farewell to Christine, I felt a strength of emotion that drove me almost to the brink of tears. Anyone that can should take the time to journey into this timeless classic.

The book that started it all!

Book title: Henry Huggins

Henry Huggins - book cover picture

From my understanding, Beverly Cleary was a librarian who could not get some boys to read. They complained that there wasn't anything to read that they could relate to. They asked why weren't there books about kids like them, just average boys? So Beverly Cleary wrote "Henry Huggins" for them- a story of an average boy who gets into all sorts of believable adventures with highly amusing results. It is a GREAT book, and Ms. Cleary introduced to children's literature some of its greatest characters: Henry and his dog, Ribsy; and, in later books, his tomboy friend, Beezus, and Beezus' amazingly pesty kid sister, Ramona. Everyone of the subsequent books in the Henry/Ramona series is fantastic- filled with humor and characters with whom kids can understand and relate. "Henry Huggins" started it all and makes a wonderful introduction to Ms. Cleary's world on Kickalat Street.

Goddess for Hire - book cover picture

If you want a hilarious summer read that stays with you long after, read Goddess for Hire. The author's trendy chic-lit voice rings through on every page. Cross-cultural humor is in, and this novel doesn't disappoint. The zanny central character is her own worst enemy, so you'll be laughing your way through every social blunder and relationship misunderstanding she creates. And you'll identify with her because she's so flawed and so human. Along the way, you learn interesting things about the Indo-American culture, and you'll get rid of a few free-radicals while you're laughing. What's not to like?

PCI System Architecture (4th Edition) - book cover picture

Step by step, this book guides you over all the aspects of the PCI bus: Architecture, transactions, arbitration, PCI commands, interrupts, configuration, etc. The book refers to both 33 and 66 MHz PCI.The book language is clear, the diagrams are good and the division by subjects is well done.At the beginning of every chapter, you can see a summary of the contents of the chapter, as well as a short sentence about the previous and next chapters.NOTE: I am a hardware designer, and I think that hardware issues were well covered in the book. As I have seen from previous reviews, software designers think that there is not enough information in the book for them. Also, as already noted by other reviewers, mechanical aspects are not covered by the book.
