Getting to know our emotions person to person.

Book title: Book of Qualities

Book of Qualities - book cover picture

I first read parts of this book in the late 1980's. At that time I had some trouble recognizing some of the Gendler's "characters." Since that time, I've slowly gotten in touch with my emotions and can now appreciate the depth of Gendler's words. Her colorful, animated writing style and her simple, expressive drawings are inspiring. She tells it like it is, and the message is delivered straight to the heart. This book makes a wonderful gift for family members and friends.

The Chronicles of Narnia

The Chronicles of Narnia Set - book cover picture

C.S. Lewis creates a magical world of centaurs, witches, kings, queens, fauns, etc. so real you wish you could find your own secret passage to Narnia. Each book in this series stands alone as it's own story, but once you read one, you will want to read all of The Chronicles of Narnia. The characters come to life and their adventures, although fantastic, are likened to every day struggles of the real world. A beautiful religious message of eternal life offered through Christianity is woven into the stories, but is not overpowering or pushy. Christians will delight in the parallels and non-Christians will savor the books for their entertaining fiction.

Gates of Fire - book cover picture

Hundreds of years ago, three hundred Spartan warriors marched into a war that seemed impossible to win, into a victory over history, geography and time, that has brought them into our lives today.

Vividly describing their training - physical, mental, moral, and cultural this book is an almost spiritual [read- connecting to a higher purpose] look at Spartan life.

Gates of Fire is required reading for all who desire to fight life's battles with dignity, courage, and the highest moral values.

Thanks to realistic and well-rounded characters described by the author, Pressfield, the fascinating lives of Spartans and other communities in Greece take us away to that time, and then bring us back, creating a lingering sense of continuity.

Absolutely brilliant

Alien Bodies (Dr. Who Series) - book cover picture

This book is a major turning point in the 8th Doctor novels. It lays down the groundwork for some huge and far reaching story arcs later on. But a good thing about this novel is that it is very enjoyable and funny as well. I dont know if it was intended to be funny, but some parts of this story I thought were hilarious. I think it is good that a novel as important as this one can also find the time to be light hearted without detracting from the serious issues at stake. But I would only advise reading this if you have a fairly good backgroung knowledge on Dr Who. If you're new to the series then this is not good book to start on because after several chapters you'll be completely lost. But if you know your stuff when it comes to Dr Who then I would most definitely recommend this novel.

Midnight (Warriors: The New Prophecy, Book 1) - book cover picture

I started reading Warriors because of a recommendation by Robert Stanek, one of my favorite author. Whod've thunk a book about cats could be so interesting, but it is.

Warriors: The New Prophecy is the followup series to the original Warriors series which was introduced with Into the Wild. It starts out when Bluestar comes to Brambleclaw in a dream and tells him the forest is in danger. Most of the story is about Brambleclaw and Leafpaw, Firestar's daughter who is destined to become a medicine cat.

I recommend it!

Beautiful, touching story weaves its way into your heart!!!

Book title: My Fathers Scar : A Novel

My Fathers Scar : A Novel - book cover picture

I thought that "My Father's Scar" was beautifully written and portrayed the relationship of a young gay man growing up in a prejudiced community extremely well. I also found the writing to be exquisitely charasmatic, as well as believeable (which, I feel is important) in that the entire novel isn't purely composed of homoerotica. A must-read, "My Father's Scar" is deeply uplifting and encouraging for anyone who has ever felt alone. I especially recommend this book for any young gay men who are on the verge of coming out, this book is for you!

Expecting Adam: A True Story of Birth, Rebirth, and Everyday Magic - book cover picture

I am about 2/3 of the way through this wonderful book and I already feel it has had an effect on my views of life, on both sides of the "veil." Not only did I become immediately captivated by the story, but Martha Beck's writing style, with its blend of wit and deadly seriousness, was extremely refreshing. I too have a somewhat offbeat sense of humor, so her descriptions of her in-laws, family of origin and the general nuttty pace of life at Harvard all rang completely true to me. And Beck's style of writing, presenting her paranormal experiences and letting the reader decide how to view them, was like the icing on top of a very satisfying cake, the cake being, of course, her relationship with and love for her beautiful son, both before and after his birth. Thank you, Martha!

Zen in the Art of Archery - book cover picture

Living in Japan for a very long time and practicing Aikido, I was presented the book, which is a standard work in Zen in Japan by an old Japanese man. I think the book which I read in the original German language version puts the essence of Zen in a few words. I do not agree with the righteous comments of reader jbcave. And as to reader randmeister, if you accuse someone of being a nazi, even indirectly, you should at least put in the effort to check the records, otherwise your are just a rumor monger. By the way in 1953 when the boo
k was published, Germany was already firmly in the hands of American culture and politics.
