When Character Was King: A Story of Ronald Reagan - book cover picture

Ms. Noonan has written a book which confirms what we instinctively knew about Ronald Reagan; that he was honest, good, strong, likeable, highly intelligent, yet humble, patriotic and he prayed. Her simple eloquence confirms for us what we knew in our hearts; that he would always be remembered as a great man and one of our great presidents.Democrats and Republicans alike should be able to appreciate this book because it celebrates the career of a good American who did his best for his country.Having been inspired in 1964 by his wonderful speech supporting Senator Barry Goldwater, I became, as had so many others, moved to support to Mr. Reagan as well. The world can use heroes like him. Peggy Noonan's tribute was so warmly conversational that I felt as if I had had the honor of knowing the great man personally. I will treasure this book, always.

What a great choice it was to expand my fantasy reading beyond Robert Jordan! This book was fantastic! Every chapter, centering around one particular character in the sprawling world Jordan has created, leaves you dying to get back to him or her and see what will happen next. This book pulls no punches and avoids the chaste world of Jordan by addressing the darker side of war and sexual treachery. All of this packed in an amazing fantasy tale and you have a true winner!

a whole new look at a legend

Book title: Love Always, Patsy : Patsy Cline's Letters to a Friend

Love Always, Patsy : Patsy Cline's Letters to a Friend - book cover picture

These letters, literally found in an attic, were written by Patsy at the very beginning of her career and have only just surfaced after forty years. In l955 Treva Miller from rural Tenn. heard Patsy sing and wanted tojoin a fan club. Patsy didn't have one, so Treva started one for her and became Patsy's publicist and as well as her confidant. Together they shared the dream of Patsy's success, though Treva, sadly, did not live to see it.And Patsy of course, didn't live to enjoy it. Patsy's letters here are touching, moving and they make you realize how hard she had to work--music was a man's world--and how much she loved her work. The layout and design of the book are fabulous, making the letters clear and immediate. Hazen and Freeman have added context and explanation unobtrusively wherever needed. Bravo to the editors for this whole new look at Patsy Cline!

A great locomotive photo collection.

American Locomotives in Historic Photographs : 1858 To 1949 (Trains) - book cover picture

If you want to acquire a collection of photographs tracing the entire history of American steam locomotive development, this is the book. It is limited to builders' portraits, and has no photos of locomotives "in action". The book is chronologically organized, and photos are chosen to illustrate the different types of engines produced, with many pictures of rare and one-of-a-kind designs, like the 2-8-8-8-4T. Some engines built for foreign railroads are included, as are elevated-railway locomotives. A great picture book.

Define "Normal" - book cover picture

When Antonia Dillon joins the new peer counseling program at her school, she excpects it to be a breeze. But when she learns that she has been paired up with Jasmine "Jazz" Luther, a punker, she is anything but eager. Her only motive to stay in the program is that it would help her get into the advanced placement program next year. Then, she can achieve her dream-going to college a year early. Jazz also has a dream-a secret ambition she can't share with anyone. Nonetheless, Antonia and Jazz seem to be nothing alike- Jazz is a "punker, a druggie, a gang hanger, etc". Antonia is a "priss, a ya-ya, and so on". But as their peer counseling sessions progress, they find out they are a lot more alike than they think. This book is truely entertaining and original. Teens and adults alike will be able to relate to it. I wholeheartedly suggest this novel to anyone!

Midshipman's Hope (Traveller's Bookshelf) - book cover picture

David Feintuch is a relatively new author in the science fiction community. However, his first book is one of my favorites. This book and it's sequels is surprisingly detailed and well thought out. And the action is really fast paced and absorbing. But what really makes this series memorable and worth buying is that it is extremely compelling. You feel the tension, the fear, the joy, the rage, and the sadness that Nicholas Seafort feels throughout the series. Buy it and read it!

Pregnancy, Birth and Family Planning - book cover picture

I've read many books on the subject and this one is easily the best. Ronnie Lichtman C.N.M., Ph.D. is one of America's foremost midwives. Her writing style and expertise add new dimension to an already great book. It has everything an expectant mother could possibly want to know. Though there are many books on pregnancy and childbirth, this is the one that will be passed down to future generations. I recommend it highly.

Very good introduction to the topic for EE students

Book title: Communication Systems
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Communication Systems - book cover picture

I used an earlier edition of this text in the Communications Systems course at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (where Prof. Carlson was, at that time, the head of the Electrical Engineering Department) and found it to be a very good book. The explanations were concise and easy-to-understand. The book explains the underlying concepts well. The mathematical tools needed for the understanding of the concepts are introduced at the appropriate times. This book is used in the EE curricula at RPI and at Stanford University (in the EE 279 Introduction to Communication Systems course) and at other schools. For an EE student at the undergraduate level, this is an excellent introduction to communication systems and should help you understand quite a variety of topics dealing with both analog and digital communications.

Brilliant and Brutal

Book title: Market Forces
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Market Forces - book cover picture

MARKET FORCES by Richard K. Morgan is brilliant and brutal, a near-future SF thriller about businessmen who manage wars (backing the side who they think will earn them the most profit if victorious) and climb the corporate ladder by killing off their competition in gladiatorial car duels.

This book is not only as good as his two previous novels, it's better; in fact, it's the best SF book of the 21st century so far, if you ask me. It reads as if it were written by Harlan Ellison channeling Chuck Palaniuk or Bret Easton Ellis.
