When the Wind Blows - book cover picture

Why can't authors ever do something different without people jumping all over them. This book is great. Yes it doesn't seem possible for children to have wings. I don't read to hear about reality I read to escape and this book helps you escape so if you like a good time and a slightly suspenseful book try it out. after reading this book I tried his other books out and I don't think they are near as good.

Embraced by the Light - book cover picture

After reading many books by several empowering authors such as Dannion Brinkley, John Edward, Sylvia Browne, and Tiffany Snow, that I am still reading, my life has opened up to me in such a compelling and wonderful way. This book is well written, and thought provoking. There are great transforming authors, who shift the consciousness of humankind in a way never known before, and have the courage to reveal their paranormal experiences. "Embraced" is one of these.

How to Grow a Novel : The Most Common Mistakes Writers Make And How To Overcome Them - book cover picture

I am a composer and published author. What Rimsky-Korsakov did for Orchestration, Sol Stein has done for writing, first in Stein on Writing and now with How to Grow a Novel. Stein practices what he teaches: his book shows writers how to structure their fiction and orchestrate every expressive element. A worthy sequel to his classic text and a must read practical guide to the perplexed novice or the experienced pro.

A Wonderful, Captivating Book

Cane River - book cover picture

It is hard to believe that this is Lalita Tademy's first book. She is an excellent author and I stayed captivated with her book from beginning to end. I hated for the book to end, but after reading it, I have a new respect for African-Americans and Creoles. It is so hard to imagine a time in America's history when people were treated so harshly yet came out of their circumstances so strong. Ms. Tademy is blessed to have such a heritage in her family and to be able to trace it like she has. I highly recommend this book for the novel that it is but also for the history. It will keep you enthralled through the characters and their strength and courage. Thank you Ms. Tademy for sharing your family with us.

Cannibalism is the key

Book title: Heart of Darkness
Rating: 5/5

Heart of Darkness - book cover picture

I think to "unlock" the mystery at the heart of darkness it is necessary to consider the recurrances of cannibalism: The overt act by Marlowe's crew, "Catch 'em. Eat 'em." The metaphoric "eating of Africa" by the whites mindlessly and pointlessly excavating their endless hillside. And finally, with cannibalism as a pivotal conceit, perhaps cannibalism is--in fact--Mr.Kurtz'"unspeakable act," his, "Horror." Heart of Darkness is truly one of the great works of art in our language!

I thought my sister and I were alone

Mrs. Mike - book cover picture

My mother recommended this book to me over twenty five years ago. I found it in the library and fell in love. My sister picked it up and we started reading it simultaneously, stealing it back and forth from each other. Many years later I went in search of a copy only to find that the library had sold it off. I bought a copy through a bookseller in the back of the NY Times. Six months later I was Christmas shopping in a store that had a lot of old books as decorating props. One was a copy of Mrs. Mike. The store manager gave it to me when I explained its emotional value. My sister now has her own copy and we don't have to steal from each other any more. When I recommended it to a friend and she said she found it on Amazon, I was thrilled and just had to see what everyone said. I'm so glad this remarkable story is available to women today. It is truly and inspirational tale that will stay with you all your life.

A true masterpiece...beautiful and sad

Book title: Lust for Life
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Lust for Life - book cover picture

This beautifully written book chronicling the life of Vincent Van Gogh is a wonderful introduction to this remarkable painter, and his painful life. Stone has meticulously researched Van Gogh's life through letters the painter had written. He then uses fiction to fill in the blank spaces, and add dialogue. What makes this book so powerful is that it adds new life to the Van Gogh masterpieces that most of us have seen. The Potato Eaters for example is a masterpiece, but this book details the life of those who appear on the canvas, and Vincent's interaction with them. This book is truly a masterpiece of writing about one of the great creators of masterpieces. If you are an art connoisseur, your will love this book. If you are not an art connoisseur...you will still love this book.

This is one of the best books of the decade on resumes

Book title: Jeff Allen's Best: The Resumes

Jeff Allen's Best: The Resumes - book cover picture

Dear Fellow Job Hunters This is probably the best book of the decade on how to write resumes. All other books just explaine how resumes look like but this book takes you on a step by step approch and doesn't show you but tells you. If you are a first time job hunter I highly recomend it. If you are a seasoned pro you should still check it out resumes are changing format because of computers and video recording technology. What I hate about the book is that the sample resumes take on a problem and solutuion approch. Jeff Allen, gives an example resume and then tells you what is wrong with it.Jeff Allen forgets that no two resume is the same, becasue no two people have the same experiances, talents, abilities and back grounds to give a universal solution to resume problems.10/15/98

I'm a Japanese English learner. I often see past perfects and simple pasts on many text books. Sadly they are not consistantly used. But this book taught me that's because sometimes they were written by American style. There were much more things this book cleared away ambiguity for me. If you are Japanese, I strongly recommend this instructive book for your further English study. nakamimo mirerukara douzo check site mite kudasai, koukou eigo de aimaina tokoromo wakattari simasuyo.

Good even after the movie

Book title: The Pelican Brief (John Grishham)

The Pelican Brief (John Grishham) - book cover picture

My husband cannot understand why I prefer to read a book before I see the movie because it's such fun to see what they leave in, what they take out, how they cast the characters, etc. But I didn't have the opportunity to do so with this book. It was the wonderful movie with Denzell Washington and Julia Roberts which sent me looking for Grisham's books. I've been reading them in the order in which he wrote them and have found them all wonderful. The Pelican Brief exhibits very well something I often find in Grisham's work - the expert unfolding of the story and of the details about the characters' lives. This book, in particular, has a complex plot and a secret long-held within the pages of the book (and as well in the movie) that keeps you spell-bound. I found both main characters to be interesting and I kept wanting to know more about how they thought and how they ticked as they tried to save their lives. Read the book first and then see the movie!
